Nightwing- Prologue

The thing about the government is that sometimes they do their job too freaking well. Like right now. I stared down at the flashing lights of police cars. Blue, red, blue, red. My colors of fear. The sirens weren’t too comforting either. This was the kind of stuff you never expect to happen until suddenly it’s right before your eyes. My heart was beating faster than my wings, my breath coming in short little rasps.

Next to me my sister Autumn swore. She never swears. All my life she’s been cheerful-to-all-get-out. Now, not so much.

“Look,” I said pointlessly. Of course she was looking. Some fifty feet below our old life was crumbling away.

“Shouldn’t we do something?” she asked, already preparing herself for descent. I didn’t have to see her face to know that her expression was pained.

“We can’t,” I told her, hating myself. I grabbed her wrist, feeling her quickened pulse.

“Summer, they gave us a home,” Autumn said, stating the obvious. She strengthened her wing beats to free herself from my grasp. “Now it’s payback time. We owe them.”

She was referring to the Smith family. Our foster parents. Zack and Jared, our ‘brothers’. Their cat Sprinkles.

“We’ll help them,” I promised. “But right now we need a plan and a safe place to think of one.”

She sighed. I was right, give or take.

“Okay.”

I took one final look at the scene below with an aching heart.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, then turned and headed away from Autumn. This way maybe she wouldn’t see my tears.
