Beaches

Beaches

The waters roll onto the beach

And I remember when it was our footprints in the sand

Two steps, next to each other, just shadows in the moonlight

But in one instant, the tide rose and stole all evidence we were ever there

So we were left with only memories of that warm summer night

The taste of salt water lingering on our lips

The flow of the ocean pushing higher and higher

And the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks

And as we walked, the past was taken from us

We were left with nothing but each other and the journey ahead

But I was not afraid, as I knew that any imperfections would be forgotten

And our love would wipe the slate clean time and time again

So I held you closer, on that dark and quiet night

And I listened to your heartbeat mix with the swirling night sky

Then I promised you a star, bright in the empty oblivion

And told you one day I’d take you there

But now I realize that the promise was too long, for life so short

And the best I can do is to give you my world

Then hope that the stars in your own two eyes

Will be enough to carry our love into eternity
