BOY

I so rarely lift you up, boy
My praise is quick and shallow
Never as deep as the criticism that bruises to the bone
I need to lift you up more
Thats what I learned today
I need to hold you up to the sun
and let you hear the things I say inside
Look at him!
Look at this amazing boy!
You need to hear me tell the sun
that youre incredible
that you are brilliant
you need to watch the sun
hear that
because otherwise
its as empty as
the apologies that I throw
behind me like
tips to a bartender for the mess

Is it okay if I wake you up, boy?
Because its all hitting me
and rocking me with body blows
I want to be a different man
so, is it okay if I wake you
and shower you with all the praise
and the love that I can
I dont want to wait until morning
I dont want to sleep on this
I dont want to lose a moment

I have told you a thousand time
in the dark, when the days are ending
that I love you with
all my heart and all my soul
and all the sunshine
and all the moonlight
and all the stars
and all the planets
I love you
But have I told you that you amaze me
every day
hearing you sing to yourself
hearing you talk to yourself
giving life to your toys
petting the cat
walking into school
changing your clothes
praying before dinner
you amaze me
and you glisten and glitter
in my eyes
if I told you
you probably couldnt hear it
over the scolding and instructions
that also come with life
those are always louder
those sink to the bone
and sting when you least expect them

Boy, if these were the last words
I ever put on paper
I would want to tell you
that I see the man you
are going to be
hes in there already
and hes fantastic
he laughs all the time
he loves with all of himself
he gathers people to him
I just want him to love himself
the way I love him
and that is without end

Hey boy, are you awake?
