Chapter 6. Unexpected Visitor
Earlier that day, on the track field
Kari Knox ran at a steady pace. She was on the top of her track team, setting state records like no one else. The sun beat unmercifully on her neck as she kept running, her headphones blasted fast tempo music in her ears. She kept in step with the beat, her eyes closed. She had the entire track memorized.
In ten seconds she would come to a turn, and she would be a three fourths finished with the track. She felt someone coming closer from behind her. Her eyes popped open and she took a glance behind her. Coming up almost on her heel was Lisa Rameriez; a girl around Kari’s age. Lisa wore dark red lipstick and had long black hair that reached a little past her shoulders. The two had once been best friends; and sometime people thought that the two were actually twins. They almost did look like twins; both had petite faces, and stood around the same height. Kari however, had almost the opposite facial features. She had light brown hair, with highlights, and wore light red lipstick.
Kari picked up her pace, running faster than she normally did. Lisa’s heavy breathing died behind Kari a little while after that, and she fell behind. Kari kept on running though, afraid that if she slowed down Lisa would pass her.
She finished first, and breathed in deeply, leaned her head back with her hands on the back of her head. Lisa came running breathlessly up behind her, bent over, with her hands on her knees and panted. Beads of sweat dripped off her nose onto the asphalt track.
“Don’t… you… ever… take a break?” Lisa panted, as she got up and walked towards the showers.
Kari looked at Lisa and got up, walking at a brisk walk, passing Lisa. “No,” she replied, opening the door just wide enough for herself and did not wait for Lisa to come through.
Lisa scoffed. “You don’t have to be good at everything to succeed, Kari.”
Back to the present time, later that night
Lisa glared at Kari. She had been following her and her ‘date’ ever since after school. The two had gone to the sports center, and that wasn’t a good place to strike. She had now followed them to the park; which was a perfect place to strike in the dark. She couldn’t believe her luck when the ‘date’ had stopped to tie his shoes.
She followed Kari, her thirst almost overpowering her senses. She was about to strike when Kari met up with another human. The two talked casually, and Lisa couldn’t take it any longer. Her claws were sharp—teeth were bared. It had been awhile since she had last taken a ‘victim.’
Just when she was going to pounce, a werewolf charged through the trees. A werewolf?! Her mind reeled. According to her pride, there weren’t any werewolves in the area. But no sooner had the werewolf appeared, than another were appeared. It was unlike any other she had seen before. The werewolf and the other were fought. The other were jumped onto the werewolf’s back, then was crushed as the werewolf fell backwards. It gave a loud bark before it stopped moving.
Kari screamed at the sight.
Lisa’s fur rose as the werewolf came closer to her hiding place behind Kari.
“Kari,” it said. “It’s me, Alex.”
That’s when the most spectacular thing happened. Kari fainted.
Alex stood there for a second dumbfounded. That gave Lisa plenty of time to pounce from her cover, and land on the soft pads of her paw-feet. She stood up, a full 5 and a half feet, her tail swishing back and forth. She wore a hoodie and sweatpants, although she was transformed into her werecat form. Alex stared at Lisa.
“Stay back, wolf,” she hissed. “Or I’ll hurt you.”
“Leave Kari alone,” he growled, his hackles rose.
Lisa smiled her sweetest smile. “I’d like to see you try.”
He barked angrily at her and charged forward. Lisa stealthy dodged his attack and pounced on his back, nipped at his neck, and jumped away quickly before he could crush her like he did with the other were.
Alex growled again as he faced her again. She hissed back.
That’s when Alex realized that she wanted to bite Kari. He glared at Lisa and bent his furry head down and softly bit Kari’s shoulder. There was a strange sweet taste that entered his mouth that made him want to bite deeper into Kari, maybe even take a chomp out of her.
Lisa hissed loudly. “NO!” She pounced on Alex and bit his ear, drawing blood instantly. He howled loudly, his head jerked back as he fell backwards. Lisa was on top of him instantly, biting and clawing him, as if she wanted to tear him to shreds.
There was a loud bark, and Lisa was tackled off of Alex. When Alex rolled to his side, he saw his rescuer. The other were had gained consciousness and was fighting the werecat back.
In a few second the fighting stopped, both of the weres stared at each other, their gazes never breaking. Finally Lisa hissed and sulked away quickly, disappearing into the shadows. The other were turned and looked at Alex.
“Who are you?” it ordered, slowly walking around Alex.
Alex looked at the other were. “Alex. Who are you?”
“Jonathan. Protector of this territory, and you are in violation to the laws of the pack, set forth by our ancestors of old.”
By now, Jonathan was behind Alex and near Kari.
“Leave her alone,” Alex growled.
“She’s in my safety,” Jonathan looked at Kari’s unconscious form and saw the blood on her shoulder. “No…” he swore, then looked up at Alex. “You bit her?!”
“It was the only way,” Alex protested. “What’s gong to happen?”
“How long have you been a werewolf?” Jonathan asked.
“Werewolf? Is that what I have become?”
“Just answer the question.”
“Tonight.”
Jonathan looked at Alex. “Then it has started.”
“What?” Alex asked, his curiousity rose. “What’s started?”
“The beginning of the inter-dimensional portals.”
