A/N: This is my first... first person view kinda story. To all of you who read this, I am VERY slow at updating because I am constantly hit by huge writers blocks... and I have college. But that's life. Anywho... enjoy!
--
The air tasted stale. And somewhere along my neck I felt pain. Dull, but none the less noticeable pain. The constant, annoying, rhythmic sound of a hospital machine beeped nearby. For some reason, it was quickly getting on my nerves. It hurt my ears.
Opening my eyes, I gazed around the dark room. A curtain was drawn to my left, its faded bloodstain material didn’t do well for calming my nerves. If I was in a hospital, couldn’t they at least put me in a room with cleaner looking curtains?
Why was I in a hospital?
Gazing around quickly, I sat up and took a deep breath.
Bad idea.
Thousands of different smells invaded my senses and my hands quickly flew up to my nose, this resulted in my IV ripping out of my hand in a painful manner. But I didn’t care as long as the smell of urine, medicine, blood and pure sick was kept from my nostrils. God, what the hell was going on?! Gazing around, I saw the lights were off, and I could hear the even breathing of the other person in the room. That patient was sleeping soundly.
Clumsily, I turned in my bed and unplugged the machine from the wall before ripping the wires and tape from my skin. Gazing down at myself, I saw I was dressed in a paper dress. Wonderful.
Slowly getting out of the bed, I stood on the freezing floor with my bare feet, one hand still covering my nose. I could still taste the different scents even though I couldn’t smell them. It was making me sick to my stomach. Silently stepping over to the open door, I glanced outside quickly. There was one nurse stationed at the far end with her cart. I was trapped in the last room at the end of the hallway. Great, the only means out this way was right past the nurse, and probably a few other nurses and doctors and patients. I’d have to be desperate to get out of there.
Turning around, my eyes darted to the end of my bed where a clipboard lay with paperwork. Softly padding over to it, I snatched it off the bed and hesitantly took my hand off my nose, keeping in mind to only breathe through my mouth as I skimmed the papers quickly.
Apparently, they didn’t know my name, and fondly referred to me as ‘Jane Doe’, both on my itchy wrist band and throughout the paperwork. My reason for staying in this lovely room was because of a vicious animal bite. Instinctively, my hand touched my neck; it was bandaged, as well as my shoulder. My eyes roamed up from the paperwork onto the window, and my heart stopped in my chest.
The sky outside was dark and mysterious; the tops of the trees that hid the lit city bellow were black silhouettes. But being a few stories above the ground wasn’t what frightened me. Oh no. It was the pair of brilliant scarlet eyes gleaming hungrily at me. They smiled at me in a cruel manner before fading into the night.
Shit, some weird thing was outside the window waiting for me to leave… or it was hunting me. The window was out of the picture in my escape plan now. Quickly placing the chart on the bed, I ripped off the identification cuff and walked over to the closet I shared with my roommate. Her clothes were neatly folded inside. Quickly changing into the baggy clothes, I regrettably stole her shoes and glanced at the clock on the wall. It was well after two in the morning, so I couldn’t say I was visiting, and that would make it tons harder, the waiting room would have others in it, but they were kept there until visiting hours. Raking a hand through my semi-oily locks, I gazed around, feeling as if I were being watched.
It was now or never.
Quickly glancing outside the door, I watched as the nurse walked into one of the rooms with her cart before silently walking out of the room. My heart was beating rapidly in my chest as I quickly passed the nurse. I threw myself against the wall when I heard someone walk by the corridor, it was a tired looking man in a white coat… a doctor. Glancing around the corner, I spotted the stairwell at the other side of the long hallway.
Movement behind me made me move and I ducked out of view of two nurses, at one point crawling on the ground, before I reached the stairwell. Gripping the cold metal handle of the door, I quietly opened it and slipped inside, shutting it silently behind me.
The shoes were too big and were all ready causing blisters, so I quickly kicked them off and rolled up the cuffs of the three sizes too big pants. Tying the borrowed shirt at key point areas, I gingerly touched my bandaged shoulder. I had no idea what had done this to me, and no memory as to how it happened. Not that I really could think of it at this moment, what with the fact that some creature was hunting me down, and I was trying to escape this stench pit of sick. Tying the laces together quickly, I flung the shoes over my unwounded shoulder and gazed down the stairwell for anyone. The sound of a short breeze caught my attention upwards and I saw the door to the roof shut on its own. I wasn’t alone in here anymore. And the faint hint of laughter only added to my growing suspicion… the hunter was here.
Taking off down the stairs, I jumped two steps at a time, using the wall and the rail to keep my balance as I flew down the flights of stairs. The hunter kept up with me, I could almost feel his breath as I neared the door that led to the main floor. Flinging it open, I sprinted out of the stairwell, the hunter retreating for a moment. I had a feeling he would be tailing me real soon.
Spotting an exit sign at the end of the hallway, I darted for it, ignoring a few yells that flew in my direction, I flung myself out the door and froze when I saw those crimson red eyes smiling down at me. I had to give it to him, this guy was good.
He held out his hand in invitation as he took a step towards me. If he took four more, he’d be in my personal space bubble. Even at that distance, he was in a major threat zone for me. The shouting continued behind me and I quickly ran away from this stranger and the hospital people. Cutting across the parking lot, I cautiously ran barefoot keeping a lookout for trash needles on the dark floor. Thank goodness I didn’t step on one as I sprinted down the street, the hunter still following me. Looking down a four way intersection, I saw him standing on the one down the right. Turning to gaze down the left, he was also standing there. Glancing behind me, he was behind me smiling.
Not only was he hunting me, he was herding me. This pattern continued until I came close to the forest that was surrounding this unfamiliar town. Sirens wailed in the distance, but it was not any help for me. So I ran, wishing the shoes fit, for the needles that littered the ground pricked at my feet. Almost tripping on exposed roots a few times, I tried to concentrate on breathing as I heard him chuckle behind me.
“I do enjoy a good hunt before my meal.” He laughed loudly, chilling my all ready shaken nerves. The sound of a gun cocking behind me sent small tendrils of dread crawling through every nerve of my body. I was going to die.
Tears stung my eyes as I ran. The sound of heavy panting rung through the forest and I blinked through the tears to see a large creature racing towards me. Wonderful, now I had to fight against an animal, and this crazed gunman with superpowers. What happened to my normal life?! Did I have a normal life before this?! I’m sure that if I could remember my life, it would have been flashing before my tear fogged eyes.
As the animal drew near, I saw that it was a dog… a huge dog. The closer it came, the more detail began to form on it. It had dark brown, dirt covered fur. Its fangs were bared, its nose was wrinkled back, his ears pressed tightly against his head. Only this dog was almost the size of a small car. Its large forearms tore up the ground as it darted straight at me. The irony sank in when my foot caught on a branch, and I fell. At that instant, the chaotic scene around me erupted into a hellish nightmare. The huge canine soared over me, colliding with the gunman, who fired at him.
Freeing my foot, I twisted around and watched the scene as I scooted towards the tree that had tripped me, hugging it as I caught my breath.
The wolf stood tall on his hind legs, swiping at the man as he let out a bone rattling roar. The man, caught by surprise, lost his gun, but not his arm. He shivered out of view and appeared behind the wolf, which seemed to anticipate this move and dropped to all fours, avoiding the high kick. Springing at the man, who vanished again, he glanced in my direction. His eyes… were the most beautiful color of hazel I had ever seen, I had lost the ability to breathe for a second. He snapped a sharp bark at me that had me on my feet in a second. I could have sworn I heard ‘Run’ in that bark. I categorized it quickly as the little voice in my head willing me to live.
Spinning around, I screamed when the man was standing right in front of me, his face a foot from mine. His eyes were wild, his smile twisted, his long fangs glistening.
“Shit!” Was the only word that came to mind and mouth at that instant as I stumbled backwards, the wolf tackled the man again and they ripped at one another, hissing, growling, throwing, and wrestling across the forest floor. I was living a horror film at this point; there was no doubt about that.
Without a second thought, I darted deeper into the forest, running as fast as my feet would carry me. Gunshots went off in the distance, catching my attention, willing me to glance back. I did and I saw the fanged freak rushing after me again, his gun abandoned now, his arm wounded badly, and he looked down right deadly.
Chanting curses under my breath, I dashed towards a hill and screamed out in pain when I was smacked from the side a second later. I hit a tree hard and fell to the ground, fear gripping my very being as ice cold hands seized my throat and lifted me off the ground. I could feel my old wounds opening as I was slammed against the tree.
“You have yet to shift I see little one. I shall have a snack before killing you off…” He hissed up at me.
Tears of fear streaked down my face as I grabbed his wrist as tightly as I could. I couldn’t scream for help, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t cry in fear… and he was going to drink my blood?!
Leaning forward, he raked his cool tongue against my sweat covered skin, sending yet another chill down my all ready frigged back. His fangs grazed across my skin before he pulled away quickly and let me drop to the floor.
The wounded wolf caught himself with the tree I was now leaning against, and glanced into my eyes for a millisecond before turning and skimming the forest around him. All was quiet, before hell erupted once more and he was tackled to the ground. I got to my feet and ran, flinging my arms in front of me to steady my shaken self as I stumbled clumsily through the bushes and other wild growth. I caught myself from tripping on a fallen tree and turned to see the vampire vanish with a twist of the shadows. Had I not seen it, I would not have believed it.
The wolf was now staring directly at me. I quickly ran, and I could hear it was straining to catch up with me. It must have been more wounded then I thought if I could outrun it in my condition. Jumping down a small bank, I ran across a pathetic excuse for a stream and quickly climbed the other side of the embankment. A hand clasped onto my elbow and I felt myself hoisted up into the air, and placed on solid ground. My legs gave out at that moment and I sunk to the floor of the forest.
“I-I give up…” I panted, gripping the wet earth beneath my hands. I couldn’t move, or take another step. I was completely and utterly exhausted.
“That’s all right… I’m no threat to you.” The warm voice informed me as the stranger stepped away from me and kneeled before me.
“T-There’s a… a wolf… following me…” I panted heavily. Glancing up, I nearly fainted at the sight of him. He was one of the most gorgeous creatures I had come in contact with today, with shaggy, short brown hair and beautiful hazel eyes. That’s when I noticed he was naked…. and wounded. The last reserve of energy allowed me to push myself away from him and land against the base of a tree, gazing up at him with wide, surprised eyes.
He merely flashed me a toothy grin before raising his wounded arm and raking his tongue down the open flesh. A hiss filled the air as the muscle and skin closed together. I realized the hiss came from my own lips as I watched him heal as if by magic.
“Our saliva has healing properties for our kind…” He informed my unasked question and quickly removed a smoking bullet from his side. Tossing it to the ground, he gazed at me quietly, “You’re bleeding…” He frowned as he crawled over towards me.
I winced my eyes shut and tilted my head away from him. His hand grabbed my chin and I felt the baggy shirt peel away from my neck.
“I promise, I won’t hurt you. I’ve been assigned to protect you...” He informed me in a soothing voice. I whimpered when he began to lift my shirt above my stomach. I didn’t have a bra on underneath said shirt, and I wasn’t one for flaunting my goods to complete strangers, no matter how cute they were.
He ignored my protest, but kept the shirt covering my breasts with one hand while he peeled off the bandage with the other. With a small nip, he sliced the pressure bandage away from the pads and quickly removed them. I felt him pull me away from the tree and turn me around before hissing in a breath of air, “Shit…” He breathed at the sight of the damage.
“W-What…” I asked, trembling under the position he had me in. I felt so helpless.
His hand that had been holding my shirt moved up to my chin, tilting it up and away from the wound, he leaned forward and raked his tongue across the sore spot on my neck. I shook in a mixture of disgust, delight, fear and excitement. I had a feeling I could trust him, so I instinctively relaxed against his touch and he continued licking my wounds slowly.
And to my surprise, the pain gradually melted away.
A couple of minutes passed by before he pulled away and ran his hand over the closed skin, “There are scars, but at least they aren’t open wounds now…” He sighed before grabbing my shirt and gently placing it back on me. He stepped away from me, and I dug my fingers into the bark of the base of the tree, holding myself there as I heard him pace behind me. Opening my mouth to speak, I turned my head and locked gazes with a wolf. A completely normal looking wolf. My head snapped back to face the tree and I shut my eyes, cringing slightly. That answered another question. He had to have been the larger looking wolf that had saved me earlier… he had the same eyes as that wolf, and this one. So now there were vampires and werewolves.
“Why me.” I asked quietly, my voice trembling along with the rest of me.
After a moment of silence, he spoke, “You were attacked by a member of my pack who went rogue. You just so happened to be camping within his reach on that particular night. And for some reason, not known to us, he let you live…” His voice trailed off, fading as flashbacks of that night played through my head.
Screams, terrified screams, and the feeling of death crawled over my body just the same as it had been when I was jumped from behind by that large creature. The forest was still behind me and even though I was not being attacked, the flashback seemed so incredibly real. And then my world went black… but not before two warm arms wrapped around me, scooping me up off the ground. The last thing I heard was the sound of hounds barking in the distance, and the unfamiliar, but unmistakable scent of gunpowder filled my senses before I slipped off completely.

“And they say that every ten years, on this very camping ground, the forest creature wakes to feed on the innocent campers.” The boy finished, holding his flashlight beneath his sharp featured jaw as he smiled around at the others sitting beside him.
“Guess that means you’re safe Jen!” One of the girls laughed loudly, ruining the moment.
“Dammit Alyson! Shut up!” Jen smacked her friend’s arm, Alyson continued to laugh loudly, “Never mind her Josh, that story gave me the goosebumps!” Jen smiled at the story teller who nodded and flicked off his flashlight, a hint of a smile on his face.
“Dawn! Hey Dawn! What did you think of the story??” Alyson giggled, turning her attention to me. I glanced up at smiled at her.
“It was interesting…” I trailed off and glanced at the campfire, “We need more sticks.” I noted dryly as I gazed around at the other two boys. It was a group camping trip for the three couples. I glanced over at my date and he rolled his eyes, standing up. He was always so lazy.
Grumbling something, he walked off into the woods to go get some wood. Josh excused himself and quickly rushed after Nate to go get some more wood for the fire.
After a few minutes of silence, screaming erupted from the woods, not far off. The four of us remaining by the fire stood up quickly and looked in the direction it was coming from. It grew more frantic and Jen let out a dry laugh, “Stop joking around Josh!” She called loudly, I noticed she was hugging herself, and her eyes were wide in fear.
The screaming stopped, and then the sound of Nate’s scared voice tore through the air. The remaining guy rushed into the woods, only to stop when a loud roar echoed throughout the woods.
“Oh shit! Is that a bear! There aren’t supposed to be bears here! Oh my god!” Alyson screamed through her hands that covered her mouth. Nate was silent now.
I took a few steps away from the fire, and saw the gleaming yellow eyes peering at us from the foliage. A large brown creature rose onto its hind legs and swiped at Alyson’s boyfriend, he fell to the ground, his head all but severed from his body. I screamed at the top of my lungs before turning and running into the forest, the other two girls doing the same.
The sound of Jen’s hysterical screams caused my head to turn, only to find the monster ripping her to shreds. I held back the need to vomit as I ran as fast as I could. Alyson was attacked next and quickly silenced before the forest fell still around me.
The only sound I could hear was the very sound of my heart racing in my chest, and my heavy breathing as I dashed towards the car that was parked five minute walk away from us. I could almost see it as I felt something heavy push me to the ground. A sharp pain burned my back as immense pressure gripped my neck. Crimson liquid pooled beneath me as I gazed ahead, darkness beginning to fog my view. Too shocked to scream, I felt the creature unclamp its jaws from my shoulder and take off into the forest.
With all the strength I could muster, I reached forward and dragged myself towards the car, towards any means of being saved. And then, the world fell into darkness.
--
My eyes flew open, and I quickly gazed around me in a confused manner. Sitting up, I found I was wearing only a large white shirt, and it was now dampened with my cold sweat. Looking down, I saw I was laying on the King sized mattress, different comforters draped around me. Gripping the crisp comforters, I threw them aside and made to get off the bed, only to see a huge sleeping monster on the floor right beside the bed.
Watching it unblinkingly, I crawled off the foot of the bed and silently made for the door. A growl emanated from the large wolf that made my legs quiver and turn into rubber beneath me. I fell onto my knees and back onto my behind as I gripped the frame of the door.
Picking himself up off the floor, the wolf turned his large head to gaze at me. This was no natural looking wolf. It looked like the one that attacked my friends at the campsite, almost a mixture of a bear, man and wolf. I felt a cry of fear catch in my throat as he padded towards me, his hazel eyes burning holes into mine.
And then he opened his mouth and spoke a strange language that sounded like a liquid growl. His nose inches from mine as he continued speaking. Finishing his long question he barked what seemed to be a question and I gazed at him with confused wide eyes, his clawed hand above my head, his claws digging into the all ready scratched wood.
After a moment of exchanging breaths, his angry features smiled at me and he pulled away, the hair on his arms receding, bones cracked loudly as they went back to their original size, joints twisted, but what held my attention was his face. The way it cracked, shortened and pulled in a painful looking process until a beautiful man was kneeling before me. Placing his hand back to the spot that was above my head he leaned forward and smiled.
“Let’s try this again… Where do you think you are going?” He asked, his hazel eyes frowning down at me.
