Unwritten Past – Rewritten History
Chapter 1: Remembrance

--

“Something wrong?” I blinked as we stood next to a small stonewall.

He smiled at me, “We’re here. Close your eyes, okay?”

I blinked, “…Close my eyes? Why?”

His face seemed to glow suddenly, “It’s a surprise remember?”

I sighed, “Fine.” I closed my eyes and he started leading me down a set of stairs and I gripped his shirt, “Shade, I’m going to fall!”

I heard him laugh and whisper in my ear, “Don’t worry… I wont let you fall.”

I felt my face flush as he picked me up bridal style, “Shade!”

I put my arms around his neck and heard him laugh again, “I’m not going to drop you Setasha. I promise.” I leaned against him as he carried me down the stairs.

He stopped at where I assumed was the bottom and set me down, “Okay, open your eyes.”

I opened my eyes and gasped as I put a hand over my mouth. A beach… He had led me to a beautiful beach with pure blue water that glistened in the sun, “Oh my god…”

He frowned when he looked at me. I looked like I was about to cry, “Hey… What’s wrong?”

I felt his hand on my back as I wiped the tears away, “I… It’s nothing… The water is so beautiful…”

It’s the beach… Remember?

I shook my head and Shade could tell something was wrong, “Setasha? …Are you okay? You just got really pale…”

The beach… The stars… The faces… The voices…

“I-” I cut myself off and looked at his shoes… They were black…

The footprint on the beach… The black shoes… The blond hair…

“Setasha?”

I looked up at him, “Shade… You said you thought we met before… Where did you think that was?”

Believe in second chances… Mirai yori mo ima ga kanjin.

He blinked and sighed softly, “Honestly… I can’t remember… But I feel like I’ve known you my entire life… Like we talked just yesterday, but I know we didn’t…”

You wrote it all down in the notebook didn’t you?

I blinked, “The notebook?”

Shade blinked as well and raised an eyebrow, “…What notebook, Setasha?”

The notebook you buried on the beach… About what happened there. You wrote it all in that notebook. Remember?

Shade slid an arm around my waist, “Setasha, who are you talking to? What notebook?”

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath… I bent down and reached into the sand and grabbed something. As I stood up I pulled out a black leather notebook with silver letters on it… It looked at least 100 years old…

Shade blinked while glancing at the silver lettering, “ ‘Believe in Second Chances’ …” He blinked again and looked at the small print letters at the bottom, “ ‘Mirai yori mo ima ga kanjin’ … What the hell does that mean?”

“It means, ‘More important than the future is the present.’”

He blinked, “How do you know that?”

I opened the old looking notebook and read the first page, “‘Why can’t I forget? What can’t I remember? …History itself can never be changed by anyone, no matter how strong they are… OR CAN IT?’”

Shade blinked and looked at me, “What’s that supposed to mean Setasha?”

Laughing modestly, I turned a few pages, “‘Your mind is your greatest weapon… So use it Seta.’”

His eyes widened, “Wait, whoa, rewind! … Are you saying that you wrote this? Setasha, this book is at least 100 years old…”

I glared slightly at him, “I highly doubt that. If I remember correctly…” I flipped a few more pages and stopped somewhere near the middle and pointed to the top of a page, “You’re in here too.”

Shade blinked again and he glanced at me. He hesitated, and then started to read it, “‘…You can tell a lot about someone from their eyes… He looked so confused, helpless and… Lost? Lost was definitely not a word I would have ever used to describe…’” His eyes widened again and he paused, “‘…To describe… Shade…’ ….Setasha th-… This is-”

“Impossible?” I raised an eyebrow at him with a small smirk on my face and laughed slightly, “Shade, you’re a Guardian. You of all people should know that there isn’t such a thing.”

Shade sighed softly, “I just… It’s just hard to believe… I don’t remember…”

I frowned slightly and flipped to the end of the book. I blinked as I found the picture I drew of him and held it up, “Still think its 100 years old?”

He blinked and hesitantly reached out and touched the paper with two fingers and closed his eyes. He sighed after a few seconds and opened his eyes. He stared at me as my breath caught. Deep blue eyes…

He stepped closer and slid his arms around my waist. I blushed as he rested his head on my shoulder and whispered, “I wish I remembered everything… But I do remember the drawing…” He lifted his head up and ran his hand softly along my cheek and grinned slightly, “And I remember almost kissing you.”

And I remember almost kissing you.” Damn his echoing voice.

I blushed more, closed my eyes, and whispered, “Dragon heart, dragon soul.”

He blinked, “…What?”

I laughed slightly and smiles at him, “It’s confusing…” I sighed, “Tabidatsu kimi to kawashita yakusokukokoro no naka ni itsumo aru…”

He blinked, “…What’s that mean? Sorry… I pretty much just know English…”

I laughed slightly again, “It means… ‘The promise that I made with you as you departed is always here in my heart.’”

He blushed slightly and I looked away… Suddenly I felt Shade’s lips on mine and my heart skipped a beat. He pulled his face away, but still kept it close. He smiled slightly, “Sorry… I just… It felt right…”

He ran a hand through his hair and I blinked a few times while staring at him, “… Y-… Y-you… just…”

Shade sweatdropped, “Was it really that surprising?”

I blushed more, “Uh… Yes? I’m not used to guys kissing me the day I meet them.”

He grinned, “Hey. We didn’t meet today, remember?” His grin turned into a warm smile as he tapped the notebook with two fingers.

I blinked staring at the notebook and smiled slightly.

“Shade!”

I glanced to my left and saw a guy with black hair wearing gothic clothes coming towards us.

Shade blinked, “Falkone? What’s going on?”

Falkone ran over breathing heavily, “The crystals… The crystals lit up…”

Shade’s eyes widened, “What?!”

I turned the page and blinked at the poem written there, “‘Always friend to friend / And heart to heart / For merry meet and merry part. / Just remember… / Three times three / Known by one / But all will see.’”

Falkone blinked and looked at me, “Do I know you? You seem… f-”

“Familiar?” Shade broke in.

Falkone blinked again and nodded at me. I turned to face them as I closed the notebook, “It’s complicated.”

“Seta!”

I blinked and turned around as Star ran up, “…Star?”

“Seta you got to see this! It’s amazing!”

I blinked again as Star ran by all of us, so I followed her and the guys followed me…

We ran up and down possibly every street… Some that probably weren’t even streets until we went through… Suddenly Star dashed into an old, abandoned mansion hidden behind tons of dead looking trees. We followed, but had that sense of being watched.

Star pointed to a picture covered in dust on the long, elegant, double staircase, “There! Look at it Seta!”

It was too dark to see the picture from the distance we were at. I glanced at Shade and he nodded. I walked up one side of the staircase as Falkone and Shade followed closely behind.

Shade looked at the picture first and put his arms around my shoulders, “Forget it being too dark… It’s too dusty to see too.”

Falkone glanced at us and grinned slightly as he blew all the dust off. There was so much that we all started coughing.

I somehow found myself towards the picture while Falkone and Shade were still stuck in the cloud of dust. I sighed and I heard them bickering and looked up at the picture. My breath caught and my eyes widened, “That’s… Impossible.”
