Chapter One: Break Up

I knew it all along, so I'm not sad
Little by little, little by little, like counting the numbers
The color of the withering vegetation becomes dim and I
can't tell when the season ends

Life seemed to be going very well for Shawn Smith.
He had a beautiful girlfriend, two great friends, Cloe and Jack, was doing great in school and had a pretty good home life. He felt as if he were in love with his girlfriend, Helen. She was great, not so understanding when it came to some things but great nevertheless.
Sitting in his car Shawn waited for Helen to come out already. They were going to be late for school if she didn't hurry up. He had to resist the urge to honk the horn on her, something that made her mad.
But did she really have to take so long just to brush her hair?
Finally she came out, looking as beautiful as ever. Her long black hair looked shiny and healthy, her blue eyes stood out and looked like sapphire. And in Shawn's eyes she had the body of a Greek Goddess.
“Sorry, did I make you wait long?” Helen asked after giving him a peck on the lips.
“Not as long as usual. I think you've broken your own record,” Shawn grinned.
Helen giggled before playfully slapping him on the shoulder.
“Whatever! Why are you in such a hurry today anyway? I mean, we're still pretty early, we're not going to be late or anything,” she pointed out.
“Yeah, but before I go to class I want to see Cloe and give her back her DVD I borrowed. But if you had taken too long I would have been late after giving it to her.”
At the mention of Cloe, Helen's face hardens and she sat back in her seat with her arms crossed. She did not like talking about Cloe, that much was obvious. Shawn never got it, he didn't know why she acted like that but wasn't going to end his friendship with Cloe.
“Can't we go through one day without bringing her up?” Helen mumbled.
“She's my best friend,” Shawn claimed. Already he didn't like where this conversation was going. He started to regret bringing her up at all. Which was crazy. Cloe was his best friend, so of course he thought of her.
Helen sighed. “Whatever. It's obvious she's more important to you.”
“Helen. . .”
“I mean really! What's so great about her? It's her rack isn't it? So she's a C cup and I'm a B, so what?! You're more attracted to her aren't you?”
Shawn sighed. “No. She's more like a little sister to me.”
“That's sick.”
“How is that sick?”
“Thinking that way about someone who you say is like a 'sister' to you. It's like saying you're all for incest. Gross. But then, it doesn't say much on her part either.”
“Drop it,” Shawn said, his voice suddenly as cold as ice. He didn't like it when Helen talked about his friend that way. Especially when none of it was true. He didn't know why Helen felt so insecure about their relationship.
One time she when she got drunk she blabbed to him about how he'll leave her for Cloe. When he brought it up the next day. . . that was when this began. Helen did nothing to hide it either. She was very bitter and rude to Cloe, making Cloe uncomfortable around her. And making Shawn have to choose who to hang out with.
Because of this, he's been neglecting Cloe for awhile, and couldn't deny that he missed her.
When they got to school Helen left, not wanting to be around him while he was with or around Cloe. She didn't mind Jack but then, Jack was a boy.
When he got to the lunch room he went to the table where Cloe and Jack sat. He smirked when he saw them messing around and laughing together. He missed that. Sometimes he wished he didn't have a girlfriend just so he could hang out with them freely again.
Cloe and Jack look up at him when he approached them.
“Hey Shawn, where's the ol' ball and chain—ow!” Jack glares at Cloe who had just kicked him under the table.
“Jack, stop being jackass!”
“Funny.”
Cloe grinned. “I thought so.”
Shawn chuckled and reached into his bag to fish out Cloe's DVD. “I just came to return something to my dear ol' friend Cloe.”
He handed her her DVD and she pouted.
“I don't have enough room in my bag for that right now!”
“So carry it, or carry one of your folders or something,” Jack shrugged.
“But that would take too much energy! Shawn. . . can't you hold onto it for me? And give it to me at the end of school at my locker? Please?!” Cloe gave him the saddest puppy eyes she could muster. Eyes that Shawn could not resist.
He found it odd when he thought that her big jade eyes were even prettier than Helen's sapphire ones. But he quickly dismissed thoughts like that, thinking that he needed to get laid.
“Damn Cloe, feeling lazy?” Shawn teased, but put the DVD back in his bag anyway. Helen wouldn't like him seeing her after school but he didn't really care at the moment.
“Shut up! I only got like, three hours of sleep thanks to Jack!”
Shawn raised an eyebrow at his friend and Jack smiled back innocently.
“What?”
“What were you guys talking about for so long?”
“Well. . .”
“Jack hasn't been getting laid lately and wonders if it's because his dick's so small. I laughed my ass off when I heard that! You should have heard it Shawn! It was so—”
Before Cloe could finish what she wanted to say the warning bell rung. Signaling that there's only going to be five more minutes before class started.
“Damn. . . guess you'll just have to hear about it some other time huh?” Cloe frowned. She missed hanging out with Shawn just as much as he missed her. And she couldn't deny that she too sometimes wished that he didn't have a girlfriend.
For more reasons than one. . .
“I'll walk with you guys to class,” Shawn said.
“Walk with Cloe, I gotta find some hottie to flirt with. I really need to get laid!” With that said Jack runs off into the hall.
Shawn and Cloe stare after him but didn't feel like questioning the actions of their weirdo friend. Shawn looked over at Cloe as she took his hand in hers.
“Walk me to class?” she asked sweetly.
“Sure.”
They walked through the halls hand in hand. It wasn't anything new and no one questioned it. It was always like this with them, it was nothing but a simple gesture of friendship for them. That and nothing more.
Or at least that was how Shawn felt.
Cloe found more meaning behind it. And she felt like holding his hand felt like she was keeping him to herself. A sign of friendship but a sign of him being there. Even though it didn't feel like he was ever there anymore. Not when he dropped her hand. After that, she felt lonely and torn.
“So how are things with Helen?”
Shawn shrugged. “Okay I guess.”
“Still doesn't like me?”
Cloe sighed when Shawn remained silent, and took that as a 'yes'. Truth be, Cloe didn't like Helen either. But she was her best friends girlfriend so she was at least civil with her. And she was happy—and sad—that Shawn found someone. She wanted the best for him but she wasn't liking how she was taking him away from his friends.
Taking over his life.
It made her wonder, if they broke up how will Shawn handle it? Or will he even be able to handle it? She worried over that little fact and hoped that he wouldn't do anything rash over it. If it did happen.
The chances were high, it being a high school relationship and all. But Helen didn't seem too keen on the idea of letting him go. But will he ever want to let her go? She didn't know, but a small part of her hoped so.
They stopped in front of her class but didn't stop holding hands.
Shawn kissed her on the cheek, another gesture of friendship, then let go of her hand. Immediately Cloe could feel the the tear in her chest.
“Lets hang out sometime. . . I miss it,” Cloe admitted.
“Yeah, I do too. I'll make some time this weekend. Okay?”
“If Helen lets you,” she mumbled and instantly regretted it. It wasn't his fault his girlfriend was controlling. She was afraid she had hurt him but when she looked up at him she only saw him smile a bit before chuckling.
“If she doesn't I'll sneak out, or fake sick or something.”
Cloe's mouth dropped. “You'd lie?”
“Not lie, just not inform her.”
“You're evil,” Cloe muttered.
“Maybe.”
“So I'll see ya after school?”
“Yeah,” Shawn stepped back and said goodbye before turning away from her completely and walked to his own class.
Cloe watched his back as he turned the corner. It seemed that was all she ever did. Watch his back from afar as he had a life. All she had though was the few remaining remnants of their friendship. And she was clinging onto those bits as if her life depended on it.
After school Shawn went to his locker and was faced with Helen. She seemed to be in a good mood but he knew that was soon going to change, once he told her he'd have to see Cloe and give her back her DVD.
“Hey, baby,” Helen smiled and kissed him, wrapping her arms around his neck in the process.
“Hey, you're in a good mood.”
“It's so sunny outside! I was thinking we'd go swimming after school.”
“Sure. . .” Here we go. “But first I have to give Cloe back her DVD.”
Just like he thought Helen's expression fell and all of the happiness and excitement disappeared. He was getting sick of this in all honesty. He can't even give a friend back a DVD without making her mad.
“I thought you went to give it to her this morning,” Helen said as she crossed her arms.
“I was. But she didn't have any room in her bag for it,” he explained.
“So?”
“So,” Shawn mocked. “She asked me to hang onto it for her until the end of the day. Nothing big, and she would have kept asking anyway. It's just easier to agree with her.”
Helen sighed irritably.
“I'm getting tired of this, Shawn!”
Here we go. . .
“I can't take this crap anymore! You're so blind you can't see it! But I can. It's obvious that Cloe has very not so friend like feelings for you. And I'm tired of worrying about whether or not she'll confess to you and ruin everything! I can't take it anymore!”
“What are you talking about?”
“I can't deal with it anymore. So I'm going to give you a choice. Make sure to think about it before you answer. . . I don't want you make any decisions you'll regret.”
Shawn was not liking the sound of this, or where this conversation was going. He was beginning to feel a bit uneasy and nervous. A bad feeling erupting in his gut.
“And what choice is that?”
“Cloe or me. It can't be both anymore. You have to choose between us.”
“Choose?”
“Yeah, which one do you want in your life? Cloe? Or me? I don't want to be with someone who puts another girl before me. Maybe if she really was your sister. . . but she's not. And you don't think of her as one either. You're just too blind to see even your own feelings.”
“I'm not blind! Cloe and I are just friends! You're the one that has problems seeing!” Shawn shouted, his temper setting itself free. This surprised Helen, he rarely ever lost his temper with her.
“And Cloe's not the one with the problem either! You are! She would never ask me to choose between you or herself. Fuck Helen, how did you expect me to react to this huh?”
“Come on, Shawn! Cloe is the problem! All this fighting started because of her! Because you chose her over me! Remember?”
Shawn knew what she was talking about. They were supposed to go on a date, their first one, but Cloe called and was crying. He couldn't just leave her. When he got to Cloe she had a knife in her hand and was going to cut herself. So he canceled his date with Helen to stay the night with Cloe.
“Cloe was sad! She was going to hurt herself, you wanted me to just leave her like that and hope that I don't find her name on the list of deaths the next day?!”
“You chose her!”
“Oh my god!”
“Fine! If you can't choose than I'll choose for you!”
“What?”
“I'm breaking up with you Shawn. So there, you can have your Cloe and she can have you because I'm not going to get in your way anymore.”
Shawn's mouth dropped. All his anger dissipated. Was she serious? She was going to break up with him for a misunderstanding? A two year long relationship? All because he didn't abandon his friends for a date?
That was so. . . messed up to him. He couldn't believe he was being punished for being there for a friend.
“You're. . . punishing me for—”
“Not punishing you. Just letting you go, you can do whatever you want now. I'm no longer your 'ball and chain'. Yeah, I heard Jack refer to me as that before. And you didn't disagree with him either.”
“He was just joking around!”
“Whatever. I don't even care anymore,” Helen said as she threw her arms up in the air and walked off on him. Leaving him there standing by the lockers.
He knew this was coming. . . he saw it coming ever since the fights starting happening.
Suddenly his mind went blank. Everything around him disappeared.
Almost as if he really was blind.
this is a remake of my story Responsibility of Love. And no he didn't really go blind at the end. I hope you guys enjoyed and if you did leave me some reviews! I like this version a lot better than the original already! Has more of a plot line and some depth. And Cloe's not a Mary Sue, ha ha! Review?!
