Gavin POV

Beep beep beep beep beep

The alarm kept going off but my ambition was lacking, like most mornings, and I didn't want to waste the energy to hit the off button. There were better things I could do with that little bit of energy. Like swat a fly. Kick a pebble. Glare at a random someone in the hallway at school, adding to my badass persona.

I heard a little click and the beeping stopped. I looked over to see a sleepy Shelby clinging to her teddy bear and glaring at me.

"Gavin. You ruined my dream!" she whined. I smirked at her.

"Sorry shortstuff! But why do you need to sleep to dream about me?" I jumped off the bed, picked her up and swung her around. She squealed loudly and her bear went flying across the room. I set her down and patted her on the head. "How bout you and me go get some breakfast huh? And after that I'll take you to the park."

Shelby made a failed attempt to swat my hand away. "Yeah you promised mister! I thought you forgot!" she grinned showing off the two gaps of missing teeth.

Like I could forget. It was the only reason I had my alarm set on a Saturday anyway. So I didn't sleep till noon and face the wrath of our mother for not taking Shelby to the park. She had been pestering me since we arrived in our new home to take her there. Shelby talked about it day and night.

"And what would you do if I DID forget?" I gasped. Shelby kicked me in the shin, which didn't hurt in the slightest, only added to her cuteness.

"That's what I'd do!" she giggled and ran out of the room and down the stairs, obviously over her sleepiness and unfinished dreams.

I ran a hand through my hair sighing. I too had an interrupted dream. It was fading from memory but I could vaguely remember Stephanie, in a bikini, on a beach, at sunset, with whip cream. I groaned at the thought. I was becoming a pervert like Grandpa Joe. Still. It absolutely flabbergasts me that there isn't a line of guys waiting to take Stephanie out and just sweep her off her feet. If they're letting her little (cute) stutter keeping them from pursuing her then they are all damn fools.

Although I'm not too keen on the idea of anyone pursuing her other than myself. And I'll punch anyone in the face who actually tried!

Maybe it's a good thing the guys at our school were too much of dicks to see how amazing she is. Then I would have to share.

The thought of seeing Stephanie again made me anxious. She'd seen that scar. She'd want to know what it was from. It's not something I can explain to her. I don't want her pity. And I don't want her to know. She won't think of me the same. I want to be her hero. Not a weakling.

"Gavin! I made waffles!" Mom yelled up the stairs

All negative thoughts, I shoved aside. I can't enjoy waffles with bad juju in my head.

When I had thrown on some, semi, clean clothes and had gotten my hair to the elegantly disheveled look that ladies just swooned for, I clambered downstairs and dove into my mothers waffles.

I think I remember more of my dream…there was waffles.

"When are we going Gavin??" Shelby bounced up and down in the seat across from me at the table. She was already dressed up in one of her many pink dresses, and a bow in her hair.

"We'll go when you eat your breakfast" I slid her plate closer to her urging her to eat. "Mom made these wonderful waffles and you should eat them."

"Well thank you for being so considerate sweetie!" my mom smiled, "but I still expect your room cleaned and everything finally unpacked today. Or else!" she exclaimed with fake enthusiasm. I sensed a bit of malice.

"Yeah mom I know. I'm sick of tripping over boxes too. Are you sure there's no way you might possibly do it for me?"

"No."

"Oh well that's too bad." I pulled out my wallet and took out a five. "What if my friend Mr. Lincoln asked you nicely?" I slid the five across the table into her direction.

"Hey look, I five dollar bill just casually lying here!" a hand snatched the five away. My dads hand.

"Stealing money from your own son? You're a pig." I grabbed for the dollar but he tucked it in his pocket, and moving away to get a cup of coffee.

"I wasn't stealing from my son. I was just grabbing a random dollar off the table. If nobody had it safely in their wallet then I guess it didn't belong to anyone." He shrugged. My dad looked a lot like me. He was tall with the same facial structure and brown hair. Basically we were two sexy dudes.

"Daddy that's my dollar!" Shelby put out her hand grinning.

"It is? Well then here you go baby!" Dad pulled out the five and placed it in her hand. He grinned at me as she squealed in delight. "Sorry Gav, but you shouldn't bribe your mother.

"Yeah yeah." I shoved a forkful of waffle into my mouth. "Don't you have some loonies to deal with?"

"Gavin you shouldn't make fun of my patients. Remember your kindergarten teacher was one of them."

"Yeah while everyone else got to listen to story time, I had to listen to her telling me what weird dream she had the night before."

"She was a sick women." My father nodded his head sipping his coffee. "Anyway I'm off today and I promised I would help you're mother look for a place to set shop with her new vet clinic. I don't know why she'd need help. There's a closed vet building downtown that's perfect."

"But you have to come with me to make sure it's okay! Like how you're always there when I buy a new car." My mom looked over her shoulders from where she was washing dishes.

"Why is it closed anyway? Maybe the building was condemned?" I placed my plate in the sink for my mom to wash.

"No it's perfectly fine. It's just that the previous vet there…well he accidentally put a dog to sleep instead of giving the dog a sedative. The nurse wrote the wrong thing or something, I don't really know how it happened. And let's just say he didn't get any business after that." My mom laughed. "Hopefully that won't happen to me!"

"Mommy…what's so bad about the doggy sleeping?" Shelby asked innocently.

My dad snorted and mumbled "good luck" to my mom as he walked out of the kitchen.

"Hey kiddo! We gotta go to the park remember?" I picked her up and put her on my shoulders. "We'll be back later mom!"

She will totally owe me for that.

"Hey Shelbs, how about we pick up another friend to go to the park with us?" If I have to sit in the park for a couple hours it'd be nice to have someone who isn't under the age of 10. Stephanie will do just fine.

"Sure, but only if they push me on the swing!"

I laughed, "I'll do that for you." I walked into the direction of Stephanie's house. She really didn't live far from me, about two blocks. And the park was three blocks away in the same direction. And thank god too because Shelby had a song from Yo Gabba Gabba stuck in her head and she didn't know any of the words.

When we approached Stephanie's house, I could see her sitting on the porch with another book shoved in her face.

"Nita! We're going to the park! You wanna go with us?"

I watched as her book slowly slid from her face and she stared at me as if I was crazy.

"It's Saturday." She stated bluntly. I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah it's Saturday, and it's park time! You're coming with. Shelby, work your magic on her." I grinned.

"pwease come with us Nita!" she did her perfect puppy dog eyes and I watched as Stephanie's heart just melted.

"W-well…okay." She closed her book and stepped into the house, returning without it. She stepped down from the porch and over to my side.

We started to walk in silence. The only sound was our footsteps and Shelby's humming.

"So have you gone to the park recently?" I asked her hoping to strike a conversation that was as far away from my secret as it could be.

"n-n-no. I fell off the monkey b-bars when I was n-n-nine."

"Ah. So scarred for life huh?"

FUCK

"Yeah" she laughed.

Kill me. Just kill me now. Shoot me. Bury my body in an unmarked grave.

I couldn't say anything after that. I just kept my head straight forward until we reached the park.

Shelby wiggled to get free, so I set her down and she took off towards the jungle gym. I smiled as she met other children her age, and they all started a game of tag.

Children sure do work fast.

So could I.

I silently grabbed Stephanie's and pulled her over to the swings.

"Get on!"

"No."

Why must women love the word no so much? I'm so sick of that word!

I decided no wasn't good enough so I picked her up in my arms, savoring the feeling of her body pressed to mine. For a moment I didn't want to let her go. She had this effect on me. Like the kind you read about or watch in movies. She made my breath hitch, and my heart race, and she brought out the protective instinct inside of me, that I usually reserved for my sister. Something. Something about her just made me want to lock her away where she could never be hurt again. People had hurt her, but I wanted to care for her. I sound like a crazy person, because I've only known her for a week, but it seemed like a lifetime, and in my mind it was completely justified.

She wasn't struggling against my hold on her. She just had a glazed look in her eyes as she looked into mine. Afraid of my own self-control I set her down on the swing moved behind her and started to push.

"Come on Nita" I cleared my throat. "Doesn't it feel nice to be a kid for a day?"

"I don't w-w-w-w-want to be a k-k-kid." She bent her head back to look at me.

I grinned. "You don't have an inner child at heart? One that screams for you just run around screaming, eat a whole pail of ice cream, be a ballerina?"

She laughed.

Her amazing Laugh.

"I never wanted to be a b-b-ballerina"

"Oh?" my eyebrows shot up. I sniffed out a new opportunity to learn more about her. "Well what did you want to be then?"

She looked up at the sky as I continued to push her slowly.

"An actress."

Her answer stunned me. She didn't seem like the person who would be the star of the stage. She seemed too shy.

"So are you going to become famous, and then never remember my name?"

She looked back at me again squinting at the sun in her eyes. "I c-can't be an a-a-actress."

"Well why the hell not?" I demanded. She can probably remember every line in any script.

She laughed again.

"It's obvious."

I moved from behind her and crouched down behind her grabbing the chains to the swing.

"If you're going to let something as small as that keep you from reaching for your dreams, then, I'm sorry, but you will never be happy. Have a little faith in yourself." I said gently, "Someday you'll see what I can see." I gave her a smile and grabbed her hand pulling her off the swing. "Come on babe! You and me are going down the spirally slide!"

Love is like spinning around in circles. Your heart races and the world is turned upside down. But you have to be careful. If you don't keep your eye on that one point, You'll lose your balance and fall overPractical Magic

A/N: I actually watched Yo Gabba Gabba for some research, and some sick homicidal sun took a bite out of a dancing watermelon. Sick. Child shows today scare me.

The old Stephanie picture is messed up, so she has a new one!!! Next chapter is Stephanie's point of view! If you liked Gavin's then leave me a little review to tell me so!
