I'm coming out of my cage

I'm coming out of my cage

And I’ve been doing just fine

Gotta gotta gotta be down

Because I want it all

Kara searched for his face in the crowd. She knew he was here, and they had planned to meet up. She spotted him soon enough and with a leap in her heart and a grin on her face she walked forward, pushing her way though the crowd to get to him. The Killers concert was going great and Kara knew it, tonight she’d be able to just hang out with her best friend Matt.

Kara always loved Matt, from the first time they met way back at another concert. She’d never tell him, of course, because he was dating Sam and always said how much he loved her. Kara just wanted Matt’s happiness, so she stood on the sidelines.

As Kara made her way over to Matt she grinned and opened her mouth to call out to him but froze when he turned and Sam walked over. He bent low and kissed her with a passion Kara could only describe as pure love. Kara felt her heart break into small slivers.

It started out with a kiss

How did it end up like this

It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss

Sure Kara knew Sam and Matt were in love. And, though she’d never seen them kiss before, she always knew that she’d never have her chance with him. But seeing that display of affection caused tears to well up in her eyes. She felt hopeless. “It was only a kiss.” She kept telling herself, trying to stop the tears and the pain. “They’ve done worse.” But that only broke her worse and she left without even greeting her best friend.

Now I’m falling asleep

And she’s calling a cab

While he’s having a smoke

And she’s taking a drag

As Kara drifted off to sleep, visions of what Matt and Sam were probably doing right now filled her head. Her dreams were plagued by the sight of Sam and Matt making love.

Now they’re going to bed

And my stomach is sick

And it’s all in my head

But she’s touching his—chest

Now, he takes off her dress

Now, let me go

She woke up crying from a rather vivid dream. It was too much to take and Kara knelt down by the toilet, throwing up into it. She felt as if she were dying. Hell had come in the form of a love triangle.

The next day Kara was out at a coffee shop getting something to, hopefully, stop the stomachache she’d been having since the concert. She turned to leave when she spotted Matt. He grinned and waved her over. “Kara!” He called. He looked euphoric and Kara felt her own lips twitching upwards, liking it when he smiled like that. When she sat down in front of him, he leaned forward as if excited to reveal a secret. “I did it! Sam and I finally made love for the first time.”

Kara grinned. “Oh wow!” She never showed it, but when he said it she broke. She reminded herself her role. She’s the best friend that’s always by his side, giving him advice and cheering him on. That was her job. But even when she reminded herself, she felt as if fate had cruelly turned upon her.

Sam walked over and Matt jumped up, kissing her full on the mouth. Kara felt tears well up in her eyes and excused herself in a hurry to get away from the sight.

I just can’t look its killing me

And taking control

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea

Swimming through sick lullabies

Choking on your alibis

But it’s just the price I pay

Destiny is calling me

Open up my eager eyes

Cause I’m Mr. Brightside

When Kara made it home she ignored the ringing cell phone, playing Matt’s ringtone. She didn’t need to talk to him right now and he probably just wanted to know what was wrong. Kara ran to the bathroom and threw up before looking at herself in the mirror. She was crying so hard that her own reflection was indistinct to her eyes. But no matter how distorted her vision became from the tears, Matt kissing Sam so lovingly remained burned in her mind. She screamed and punched the mirror, ignoring the

blinding pain in her hand as the glass splintered and slashed at her flesh.

I never…

I never…

No physical pain could take her mind off of her broken heart. Kara felt dizzy after a moment and turned to go into her room and get her phone. Something was wrong and she knew it but as she turned the dizziness got worse and Kara tripped and fell into the bathtub, hitting her head on the nozzle and losing consciousness. Kara never woke up, bleeding out in the bathtub.

I never…
