“Communication, that’s the key. Most problems are caused by misunderstanding, which is, essentially miscommunication. Misinterpretation. That’s the problem.”
“No. The problem is, no one cares about anything anymore.”
“Please, no one ever cared about anything. Ever.”
“Now you’re just contradicting yourself.”
“That’s what I do.”
A scoff. The man regarded the woman adjacent to him. A small smile of affection, and satisfaction, formed on his lips.
“The point I’m trying to get across is… what? What are you doing? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“No reason.” A smile.
“This is a perfect example of miscommunication. You won’t answer me directly, so I don’t know what you’re feeling and thinking. And later on, there will be chaos.”
“Why can’t we ever have an intimate moment?!” He exclaimed.
“I didn’t even know that’s what you were going for!” She shouts back. They quiet down, sit there. For a while. Then, they smile. They realize the irony in their short, but heated feud.
“Miscommunication.”
She looks up.
“Yes. If we had only calmly explained what we
meant, then we wouldn’t have had that little dispute of ours.”
“But we should be in the phase where we don’t need to explain things, shouldn’t we?”
“Will. Everything needs explaining once in a while.”
“But why?”
“This society is so focused on ignoring each other and taking, doing everything fast paced that we forget to enjoy things and each other. We forget how to treat each other. How to really just slow down and drink life in. To appreciate the people and things we have in our lives. But, mostly people. I think we concentrate too much on the material things. Status in life is an other big issue. People doing things and becoming beings, they don’t want to be, simply because that’s what is expected from them. For the money and the fame. “Who care if I hate my job, I’m rich.” That’s what they say, but I wonder how miserable they really are.”
“Don’t forget about the way people are treated.”
“Wee, that hasn’t really changed.”
“True, What does television have to do with all of this?”
“Ah, yes. TV. It’s like a brainwashing device working at a snail’s pace.”
“I don’t agree. You are right to some degree. But if a young toddler is watching some kind of glamour, fame, rich, advertisement show, then the brainwashing works much faster.”
“You’re right. But you watched it all as a child, didn’t you?”
“Yes.”
“There, it doesn’t effect everyone.”
“No. I think it depends on your parents as well.”
“I don’t like the fundamentalists.” She made a slightly disgusted face. He laughed.
“I know you don’t.” Silence follows. They don’t know what else to say.
“So, got any good gossip?” She says, while lightly tapping her foot, on something invisible, in the air.
“Here is an other problem. Gossiping. Moderate gossiping can be ok, but gossiping to the point where you’re putting the person down is just wrong” She blushes. “Hey, that doesn’t mean I think you’re a bad person.”
“I know. But you are right. People shouldn’t be bringing other people down. That’s all we, as a society, seem to be doing. Patronizing people, making sure they never become equal in status and intelligence. It’s as though every single individual is so afraid of someone thinking they are stupid, that they bring people down, just to validate their own intelligence. I don’t know how this is caused, maybe it’s selective video programming, or music, or god knows what. But we should be working to stop this. Society should stop this. Then, maybe we could understand each other.”
“But don’t you think world peace could never be achieved?”
“Yes and no. It’s possible for everyone to be genuinely happy, but dark nature is in us. We all have murderous tendencies. We can’t have an everlasting paradise, but we can be happy. People just have to realize how and start adapting to a new kind of life.”
“We seem to be, becoming a new breed of future individuals. We relate our lives to the lives of characters from shows. We name our children and pets after celebrities and celebrity associated things. It’s like we are following the wrong kind of god, we aren’t being who we truly are.”
“Then, who are we, truly?”
“Who we want to be, but we don’t even know who that is yet.. It’s through experience and education, we find ourselves. Our true selves.”
“So many people seem to be lost these days. Most likely because we’re all so judging. They pretend to be the people society would accept. They can’t stand being rejected. We can’t stand being rejected.” Once more silence falls upon them.
“I’m hungry are you?”
“Maybe a bit.”
“Come on Dana, let’s go get something to eat.”
“So we can discuss the chemicals the government has been injecting into our food?”
“Yes.”
“All right. Let’s go.”
