Epilogue

Chilled winds bombarded us as we exited the tall doors of Endell Academy. The night engulfed us in a moonless night still of every smart creature but booming with life for the vicious now beckoned to come out. Beside me, Peri walked silently, eyes wide with anticipation and fright for her first hunt. I reached out to touch her shoulder finding her to be shaking.

“It’s alright, Peri.” I assured her messaging her warm flesh that burned against my ice-cold fingers.

“I know.” She squeaked trying to suppress her glee. “I’m just so excited!”

A band of figures were clumped together at the edge of the Endell gates, Ares stood in the middle of them spouting off the rules. My eyes shifted through the crowd to pick out the others. Reed stood near Ivy whispering quietly though I could hear her plan as day. Astrick strode up to Royal twitching with anticipation. I took my place between him and Reed dragging a shuddering Peri along. When we approached, Ares soft gray eyes landed on me then Peri and smirked invitingly.

“Nice of you to join us, Roxi.” Her voice swam in my ears so soothing yet chilling. “And welcome Lady Peri.”

We both bowed

Ares did a 360 to look at us all, her metallic eyes fading to a charcoal black. The rest of the crowd shifted to their other forms. Reeds eyes melted to Crimson while Ivy’s went to a metallic silvery black. The rest went to black, Peri’s shinning a midnight blue.

“Have fun.” Were Ares’ last words before she sprung into the air and disappeared in a cloud of gray and white.

Reed sprouted wings large and leathery batting them a few times to get a good feel on them. Ivy did the same, her wings small, only for speed not flight, holding sharp feathers like knives. Reed grabbed her around the waist pulling the demonic girl into the air then dropped her on the other side of the gate where she took off running in jagged lines like a butterfly.

“See you in the morning.” Royal winked.

“And try not to run into any werewolves.”

Astrick added before the two bounded towards the gate. Their thin fingers ringed the bars as they scaled them unnecessarily and leapt to the other side. Then they were gone, my eyes only keeping up until they hit the center of the vast forest.

“Ready?” I asked Peri taking her hand in mine. She nodded weakly. “Lets go.”

I chuckled as we cleared the gate.

The freedom was exhilarating.
