Grieving Takes Time
5.1.08

you melted in my arms, dearie,
like so many droplets of water
streaming from the clutches of my fingertips
as I tried to hold on and keep you going

you’re not ready to face to world, dearie,
but you tried; oh, how you tried
even through tear after tear after heart-wrenching tear

I held you in my arms: my lonely, little rag doll
you squeezed back and held fast
and I realized:
you might just crack to pieces if you let go
and so we both clutched one another
as you sobbed into my shoulder

let those tears come, dearie; let them come

you crumble in on yourself, terrified
but don’t you worry, dearie, because I’ll grab you
before you’re too far gone

right now, you’re not ready to face the world
it was too soon for you, dearie
but that first day is always the worst, and besides…

it can only get better from here

after all, we both know it can’t get any worse.
