He hugged me when we said goodbye,

He hugged me when we said goodbye,

He smelled of too much spray,

And hair-gel, and the ham sandwich

I’d seen him eat that day.

He tried to make it easier,

Less awkward, more relaxed,

By hugging my best friend first,

So I’d expect it, and hug back.

I don’t know why he hugged me,

I wish he’d do it more,

I’ve always remained nice and calm,

When he’s done it before.

Because he’s hugged me five times now,

Six, if you count the time

He hugged me on his last school-day,

Thanks to a friend of mine.

It’s his way of understanding,

Of saying it’s okay,

That I’m hopelessly in love with him-

He hugs me anyway.
