When I knocked on the café bathroom door, Melinda knew it might have been either Tommy or Elliot, since no one went in. I thought about why I didn’t go in and thought that I was stupid enough to stand out here knocking. I went inside and saw Melinda, hunched over by a sink, crying.
I walked over to her. “Melinda, what’s wrong?” I asked. “Why do you care?” She asked, harshly. “Because I care about my best friend.” I said. She looked at me. “Why in the heck should I tell you what’s wrong with me, when clearly you won’t tell me what’s wrong with you?!” She yelled. I stayed silent.
“I mean, how do you keep me shut out about something that might be killing you inside? I’ve known you since the first grade and since then you’ve told me everything that happened to you, from your parents splitting up to you becoming a vegan.” She talked to me instead of at me. “Times have changed, Melinda. I can’t tell you anything I want to now.” I said.
As soon as those words left my mouth, I started feeling dizzy again. I started feeling sick and when I looked in the mirror, I saw me getting pale. “Are you alright?” Melinda asked. I ran to a bathroom stall and I found my face in the toilet, emptying the contents of my stomach. Melinda was right behind me holding my hair from my face.
I moved away from the toilet and sat down on the floor. I wiped my mouth and looked at
Melinda. “Does it look like I’m okay?” I snapped. I knew she was starting to worry. She pulled me into a hug and said, “Angeline, please tell me what’s wrong with you.”
I pushed away. “I’m just sick from work, that’s all.” I lied. “You and I both know that’s a lie.” Melinda said, standing up. She walked over to get a paper towel and wet it. She brought it over to me and I wiped my mouth with it. “Tell me the truth, Angie.” Melinda said. I was about to say something else when Tommy knocked on the door.
“Ladies, are you alright? We’re thinking about leaving soon since I have to work tomorrow.” Tommy said. Melinda and I stood up. We walked towards the door and we put our faces out. “We’ll be right out.” I said. Tommy walked away.
Melinda walked back to the sink and grabbed her purse. She took out a stick of gum and handed it to me. “Here.” She said. I took it and I quickly put the gum in my mouth. She left the bathroom first, and then I left. She was talking to Tommy and Elliot and looked at me.
“Are we ready?” Tommy asked. We all nodded. He drove us home and Elliot stayed with me to ensure that I was going to be okay. We stayed in the living room and talked until the phone rang.
I picked up. It was Bobby and he called to tell me that his aunt picked him up and he would stay until tomorrow night. I told him I understood and hung up. I went back to Elliot and we talked a little more.
Eventually the talking turned to flirting, flirting turned to kissing, and kissing turned to touching. I thought that it was a little awkward so I left the room to get me a drink. It was my favorite drink that I’d like to have when I was stressed out. Cherry wine. I poured myself a glass and Elliot one as well.
I brought them back to the living room and Elliot was relaxed on the couch. I handed him his cup and we clanked glasses after a toast. I took a sip and I immediately turned red. One thing about me drinking cherry wine is that every time I drink it, my face automatically turns red.
Elliot thought that something was wrong. I explained it to him and he just laughed. I closed my eyes and waited for the blood from my face to go away. It took me a while to get it from my face, but after the first time it happens, it doesn’t happen again.
I opened my eyes and I took another sip. It tasted different from the first sip. It tasted like the pills again. I started freaking out and Elliot just was touching my neck and kissing it. I started giggling uncontrollably and it scared me. The next thing I knew, he picked me up and brought me to a room; my room. I was really passed scared at the moment. He put me on my bed gently. He saw the fear in my eyes.
“Don’t be afraid, Angeline.” He told me. “Oh, I-I left a-afraid a few minutes ago…” I stammered.
