“ Be careful of what you wish for ”

Chapter one

Death’s dream

Breathless. The burning in her lungs refused to cease. No matter how fast she ran she could still feel his burning gaze. She didn’t know where she was but she didn’t care. Anywhere was better than here. Out of the corner of her peripheral vision she glanced at her freedom: a fire escape. It was stretching up the side of an ancient apartment block. Throwing her hopes to the wind she climbed for what seemed like an eternity. When she finally reached the top she let out the breath she had unknowingly held. She collapsed onto the roof her body shuddering after each release of breath. She lifted her gaze to the moonlit sky and thanked the heavens for her life. Suddenly she pulled out of her thoughts by the scent of burning. Smoke was rising all around her numbing her senses and burning her throat. She didn’t resist though thinking that death was welcome in comparison to her life. Right before she slipped away into deaths waiting claws she her a silky voice whisper,

Your skin is such a pretty porcelain. It will be a shame to see the life burned out of it, Deanne”

I woke from my dream gasping and coughing ,my limbs flung around me tangled in my sheets. Thinking to myself who the hell was Deanne .I’m Aurora and last time I checked I’m still alive, and yet the memory of the dream still echoed through the corridors of my mind. The dream had felt so real , so alive, I could still feel the numbing hand of death at my…or would it be her throat.

It was an awkward breakfast, sitting at the table debating in my mind whether or not to recall the terrifying dream to my parents. Will they lock me up? Put me in a crazy house? I must have gotten lost in my thoughts because I was awaken from my trance when I heard the screeching blare of the bus horn call my name. After first and second period having been a war between my mind on whether to tell anybody, I finally decided that it was just a nightmare…Right? Wrong. The rest of the day I completed in a zombie like trance. I only spoke when spoken to, and the rest of the time my thoughts were focused on last nights dream, now dubbed nightmare.

The day ended with my own personal hell on earth: chemistry and just my luck that today we were doing an activity with Bunsen burners. As if I hadn’t already given the preps enough to gossip about with my zombie like state now I most likely resembled a pyromaniac with my horrified gaze fixed on the flickering flame. Just like that the nightmare came rushing back to me. I tried to convince myself I was overreacting, but something did not feel right. As I started the lab the air around me started to crackle and feel heavy and hot, just then I felt as if the air behind me was slowly take on the form a person . Then just as it happened in my dream…no nightmare I felt a ghostly chilling breath right against my neck. My eyes closed all of the images of Deanne being murdered rushing across my mind’s eye. A shrill scream emanated around the room as soon as the fear cleared my mind I realized it was I that screamed as I fell into an abyss of darkness.

When the shadows in my mind finally cleared, I became aware of a worried murmuring in my close proximity. The whispers I suddenly realized belonged to my mother and the school nurse. The topic of discussion was of course I. Faking sleep, I listened to their conversation in hopes to figure out what was going on.

“I’m sorry Mrs. Mcgunther, but all I know is that little Keaton brought her in here half an hour ago saying that she had fainted in chemistry.” Sighed the nurse with a tone that clearly showed she had explained this one too many times.

“Chemistry? That’s Aurora’s least favorite subject I get the nagging feeling that she is probably faking and being her usual self-obsessed self.” replied my mother in her icy, unemotional drone of a voice. That did it. I couldn’t take it anymore how dare she insult me that way! Of all the people in the world I had to hear that from my mother! I decided that the best thing to do was wake from my “slumber”. Sighing just like I would do if I had really had been in deep sleep stretching my no so fake tired joints.

“Oh look sleeping beauty graces us with her attention.” My mother’s cruel snarl breaking me out of not only waking my mind up but also my body. The ensuing argument consisted of hissed insults and snarled retorts, on the other hand deathly silenced filled the ride home, and friction hung tense in the air. Dinner was a difficult affair. Upon the arrival of my father my mother launched into a melodramatic and over exaggerated account of the days events.

“Your daughter here,” she sneered, “faked fainting to get out her chemistry assignment and on top of that she lied about it.”

“How disappointing.” my father muttered his attention already glued to his one true love, the television. My mother though was not deterred and continued her rant,

“Since she is so stubborn and idiotic she should be punished accordingly.” She paused a moment letting a small smile creep over her face, “Unless of course she is willing to admit.” I was pissed. Though I was not particularly shocked because this sort of stunt was signature of my mother. I quickly turned to her and dished out my best hate glare and hissed,

“You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, and how dare you accuse me of such crimes! I will never give into you. And for your information there was a reason for my fainting and it has nothing to do with my dislike of chemistry!” My mother just rolled her piercing blue eyes.

“Oh really then why don’t you entertain us with your little tale.” my mother drawled her voice dripping with sarcasm. I opened my mouth and shut it I just couldn’t tell them because what if saying it out loud made it real? Instead I turned on my heel and left before they got a chance to see the tears attempting to escape from my eyes. When I got to my room I turned off the light and stared at the ceiling. 10 pm. 11 pm. 12 pm. 1 am. 2 am. Nothing. I could not sleep all I could think about was the dream a silly little dream. I kept telling myself that it was just a silly dream, but I could feel in my gut that it was so much more. When sleep did overcome me I wished it had not. My sleep was haunted with the unceasing vision of midnight blue eyes. Suddenly I awoke from my haunted sleep only to let the real horror begin. Creeping in the dark recesses of my bedroom was a figure, and a figure is all I could see except one stunning pair of midnight blue eyes. My breath caught in my throat, but as soon as I saw them, they were gone. I turned over and attempted to escape back into the realm of sleep.

Wednesday: a blur of boring classes, disgusting cafeteria food, retard jocks, and your average bombardment of mental breakdowns. After the final bell had rung I ran outside to greet my yellow carriage and rode to the witches castle. My afternoon was a piece of pie in comparison to what awaited be in dream land.

The darkness sucked me in from every side seducing me into its very depths. I didn’t even understand this stupid tradition what was the point in winding your way through this underground mess of pipes? Whatever the point I was reaching my breaking point. Even if they were just pipes I could feel the slow sensation of dread creeping up my spine. The intoxicating fear was taking over me as I reached dead end after dead end. Suddenly a slow pounding started to build around me and it wasn’t until water started to flow around my sneakers did I realize it was raining. The pounding grew into a rumble and the water started to rise. That’s when it hit me I had absolutely no idea how to get out of here. I could drown. I started to run the pounding of my feet adding to the thunder of the rain, up to my mid calf now. Finally after what seemed liked forever I could see a speck of light. The exit. My escape. My life. I had to walk slower now that the water was up to my knees and rising. Then out of nowhere a figure appeared I couldn’t make out his features but I could tell that he was male. When I got closer to the entrance I was practically swimming I yelled out to the man to open the door. But he was silent finally I reached the door and began to pound on it. But instead of opening the door he looked up at me with midnight blue eyes and shut the small barred grate. I was sealed in I was dead. I opened my mouth to scream, but instead the water came crashing down.
