The End

The End

of the Circle

Alex stared at Walls during the strange confrontation. Though Alex had the other severely surrounded, Walls seemed to have an upper hand. It was as if the three soldiers were mice and the single civilian was a giant creature, ready to devour them at any moment.

“I don’t know if you do,” Walls started, “But I do know your friends do. And could they really give up a scene like this and risk their lives for you?”

“The ocean is something to enjoy when you have time. You shouldn’t obsess—“

Johnston was interrupted by one of the soldiers, a younger one.

“Sir, I think the man is right. Shouldn’t we just enjoy the scenery?”

“No, soldier,” Johnston quickly added, “We must do what we came here to do. We can come here later.”

“No!” the soldier said as he talked his other comrade to the ground, causing Johnston to break them up. Johnston wondered what was going on.

After he finally managed to get the two apart, he turned to find Walls gone.

The End

Johnston stood there for several minutes, hoping this was just a bluff. When he realized it wasn’t, he began.

“Let’s go.”

The violent soldier then said “no” and drew his weapon. He shot the other soldier in the head and pointed the gun at Johnston.

“What the hell is wrong with you soldier! Drop your weapon!” When the soldier refused, Alex continued. “Drop your goddamn weapon! I will shoot you if I have to, soldier!”

“The ocean is obsessive!” the soldier said.

“What?”

“The ocean is obsessive,” the soldier repeated. “And I would die for it.”

The soldier aimed at Alex. Johnston drew his pistol and shot the soldier. He deactivated the machine and told the crewman to alert the authorities. The good sergeant would now go on a manhunt.

Walls stood in the center of the immaculate white room. He made no move, acting as though he was a toy soldier, stacked on the shelves of a children’s store.

“Why?” Alex’s voice echoed throughout the room, repeating itself three times before the air returned to its eerie silence. The cold emanating from Walls filled the room, and the good sergeant shivered from the dearth of heat.

“It’s obsessive.”

I’m afraid you’re going to die,” the good sergeant said. He raised his gun at the back of Walls’s head.

“I must say, you are intelligent, so I must say this,” Walls whispered, preparing his body for the death that awaited him. He had planned this for years. It would finally be realized. “Do you dream?”

“No,” Alex said as he pulled the trigger to his weapon. A loud crash could be heard as the chamber slide back, the empty round flying out of it. The bullet exited the muzzle and flew at Walls at breakneck speed, slicing the air with its pointy tip. It entered Walls’s head and burst out the other side.

Sergeant Alex Johnston stood at the cliff of the artificial ocean, staring out at the horizon. He looked down at his pistol and said:

“The ocean is obsessive.”
