When Elaina awoke she realized that the apartment was still. Too still. She instantly got to her feet and saw that there was a note attached to the television which read;

Jane-

I’ll be at work till seven but there’s a carnival in the park and I’ll meet you there. Other than that Jenny would like you to be at the church for ten o’clock and she’s going to pick you up to ensure that you’ll make it. She’ll take care of you and we’ll meet up at seven.

-Robert

Elaina sighed. She had been so stupid and now she was going to have to go through the entire day without him. There’s nothing that I can do now, she thought despairingly to herself as she got ready for church. I’m just going to have to make things work.

A couple hours later, Elaina sat uncomfortably in the choir box next to Jenny. “Relax,” she whispered as they stood. “You’ll do fine, you’re just a part of the chorus after all.”

Elaina nodded and opened her hymn book and began to sing. At first her voice was quiet and could not be heard at all, even by her own ears. At the prompting of Jenny, she began to sing louder and more confident. It was during those few moments that Elaina became lost in the song and she did not realize as one by one the choir singers began to stop singing in order to listen her truly heavenly voice. Neil watched his congregation as they sat spell bound at the choir, they seemed to be so devoted, so ready to listen to what he had to say and Neil realized that he would have to find some way to convince the amnesiac to join his church and his choir. After all, he thought to himself with a sigh. Those who sing like an angel must be heaven sent indeed. Maybe there was a reason for Robert saving her life.

After the service, Elaina was flanked on all sides by the church goers who were mesmerized by her voice. They came in all ages and all races and not one of them had something bad to say.

“Voice of an angel,”

“You are truly heaven sent child.”

“I had a voice like that when I was your age,”

“I want to thank you for your lovely gift.”

“You were wonderful.”

“You sings well lady,”

“What a remarkable gift.”

“Thank you,” whispered Jenny as she pulled Elaina away from her admirers. “That was wonderful.”

“I didn’t mean to take over,”

Jenny shook her head. “Don’t worry about it.”

The day went by painfully slow for Elaina she had to deal with Jenny and Neil consistently asking her to join their church. And even though Elaina constantly told them know, they kept on asking. Finally however, seven o’clock rolled around and the three of them walked into the carnival. Half-an-hour later, Elaina knew that something was wrong. “Where’s Robert?” she asked, noticing that Jenny was checking something on her cell. “Jen?”

Jenny sighed. “Seems as though he was ambushed by Violet and she’s making him play games to win stuff. He’ll meet us by the ferris wheel at eleven for the fireworks.”

“But I can’t wait that long,” Elaina muttered, panic rising.

“Pardon?” asked Neil, looking at Elaina oddly. “Jane?”

Elaina shook his head. “Listen,” she stated trying to take a deep breath. “I don’t have any time to explain. But I have to find Robert now.” And then, without waiting for a reply Elaina took off into the crowd.

“I wonder what her problem is,” remarked Neil as he watched Elaina flee.

Jenny shrugged. “I have no idea, but I’m going to find out.”

XIOIX

“Robert?” Elaina called out as she searched the park, the natural light quickly diminishing. “Robert where are you!? Robert!?” But it was no use, Elaina couldn’t find him anywhere and her time was rapidly running out. Finally she had no choice but to meet Jenny, Neil and hopefully Robert at the ferris wheel at eleven o’clock. And it was then, amidst the shining plastic lights that Elaina saw what she had feared most.

Robert was kissing Violet, passionately.

In a single moment, Elaina felt as though her entire world had come crashing to the ground. There was the man that she loved, kissing another. Elaina’s breath hitched in her throat and she couldn’t breathe. She just watched the scene unaware that Jenny and Neil had managed to catch up to her.

“Hey girl,” Jenny began slightly out of breath. “What is it?”

Elaina said nothing. She merely pointed and listened as the last midnight chimed. What happened next was beyond everyone’s comprehension. The lights began to flicker and a harsh storm began to rise. People began to scatter due to the sudden onslaught of rain and thunder. And there was a scream that pierced the night air.

Robert broke the kiss with Violet and turned to see his Jane standing before them, changing. Before his eyes her hair began to change from brown to blonde from the roots out. As he peered into her eyes he could see them fade into the brightest blue. And as he took in her entire body he saw as two gossamer wings sprouted from her back, and her simple pink summer dress lengthened and changed into a white silk robe that seemed impervious to the rain. “El-Elaina?” he asked taking a step forward. “It was you all along?”

Elaina nodded her head slowly, tears pouring down her face. “What have you done?” she asked, her voice breaking. “Didn’t you know what was at stake?”

“Elaina-” Robert began taking a step forward but Violet stopped her.

“Robert?” she asked watching as the man that she loved shrugged her off. It was in that moment that Violet realized that Robert was madly in love with the woman before him and there was nothing that she could do about. So she disappeared into the crowd, never looking back.

“Elaina!” Robert yelled as he watched Elaina begin to fade from sight. “You can’t leave me again….” he whispered as she began to rise up into the sky, fading all the while. “…I never…I couldn’t…”

Elaina looked down and shook her head. It was too late for them, much too late. Elaina continued to rise, unaware of the lightning that was flashing around her- but then when she was far above the tree line of the park a lighting bolt struck just a tad to close.

“ELAINA!” Robert cried as the angel he loved suddenly became fully visible again and began to fall. He watched frantically in the now empty park as she descended lower and lower. He watched her descent and realized that she was going to fall right above the five metre high slide. Racing as quickly as he could, Robert climbed the stairs and made it to the very top- just as Elaina did.

Catching her, and promptly loosing his balance the two of them fell and slid down the long slide. When they came to a stop, Jenny and Neil were there to greet them. “What happened?” asked his sister as she helped Robert to his feet. “What’s going on?”

Robert shook his head and knelt down beside Elaina who was once again dressed in her simple pink summer dress. As he took a physical look at condition her and realized that she was not doing well at all.

XIOIX

Her heart won’t restart

We have to get it started.

Doctor Bradbury

Robert- my name is Robert

Robert- we’re loosing her.

We can’t loose her….I can’t loose her.

XIOIX

Elaina was in a quiet white room, though she couldn’t figure out what was going on. Suddenly a bright light flashed and she found her friend, Gabriella standing before her. “What’s going on Gabi?” she asked her eyes searching for the answers. “What is going on?”

Gabriella shook her head. “You’re dying.”

“What?” Elaina exclaimed. “Dying?”

XIOIX

She’s loosing blood.

We need to get this closed.

Nurse, bring me a clamp.

Right away sir.

Come on Elaina…I can’t loose you.

XIOIX

“I can’t be dying.”

Gabriella sighed. “That’s what I told the high-angels but they said you were,” she stated as she sat down on nothing but air. “What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Elaina stated bitterly. “The high-angels did something. They erased my memories. I didn’t know who I was or what I was doing on Earth…I felt connected to Robert and,” a lone tear trickled down Elaina’s face. “And it was all for nothing. Robert doesn’t love me…”

XIOIX

Elaina!

Doctor Bradbury, we’re loosing her.

Elaina!

Nurse, pump in 20 cc’s of adrenaline. Let’s keep this girl alive.

Elaina!

XIOIX

Elaina blinked as she heard the latest snippet of conversations coming from the outer world. “What was that?” she asked looking around. “Gabi?”

“That was Robert,” she answered. “And he is trying to save you.”

Elaina shook her head. “He hates me.”

“He loves you.” Gabriella insisted. “You were right.

Elaina shook her head again. “I was wrong…”

“No,” Gabriella insisted. “You were right. He loves you. Listen.”

XIOIX

She’s stable

For now…

Come on Elaina, fight.

Doctor Bradbury?

Not now.

Sir I really think.

I said not now Nurse Helen.

Doctor-?

I’m not leaving her side.

But-

I’m the one who got her into this mess. I let that damn slut kiss me.

Doctor…

This is all my fault.

From what I understand-

I love her…and now I’ve lost her.

She is stable.

That doesn’t matter.

Of course it does.

XIOIX

“What does this mean Gabi?” asked Elaina as she turned to her best friend. “Honestly…what does this mean?”

Gabriella smiled. “This means that you were right, and they were wrong.”

“He loves me…” Elaina whispered quietly. “…he really does.”

Gabriella nodded. “Yes he does love you, and you love him.”

Elaina nodded. “More than anything.”

“Then go to him.”

Elaina looked to her best friend fearfully. “I don’t know how.”

Gabriella said nothing but merely opened her hands and allowed pure white light to filter though, completely blinding Elaina.

“Robert?” asked Jenny as she came into the private hospital room at four o’clock AM that same morning. “How is she?”

Robert shook his head. “Not good…everything is working fine it’s just- she’s not there.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I didn’t expect you too…” he snapped.

“Hey now-”

“Her soul is gone Jenny,” Robert stated coldly. “I know that that sounds strange coming from me of all people but it’s gone. Vamoosed. Who knows where it is…”

“She’s brain dead?” Jenny asked her voice deadly quiet.

“Oh no,” Robert answered. “Her brain is working, at least her lower brain functions are. The ones that regulate breathing and her heart-rate. But it’s like no one’s home.”

“What happened to her?” she asked, leaning down in front of her brother.

Robert shook his head. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

For the next couple hours, Robert kept mostly to himself and as the sun began to rise on the fourth day, a song began to play softly over the radio system that the hospital employed.

I was waiting for so long
For a miracle to come
Everyone told me to be strong
Hold on and don't shed a tear

Robert looked over at his sleeping beauty. She looked so still, so much like a statue and he wondered if she was ever going to wake up. Please, he prayed into his clasped hands. Please let her be alright.

Through the darkness and good times
I knew I'd make it through
And the world thought I had it all
But I was waiting for you
Hush, love

Something rustled and Robert looked over to Elaina once more.

I see a light in the sky
Oh, It's almost blinding me
I can't believe I've been touched by an angel with love

“Elaina?” he asked watching as her eyelids fluttered. “Elaina?”

Let the rain come down and wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears

Elaina opened her eyes and smiled at her Robert. “You’re alright,” he stated, relief pouring through him. “You’re alright…!”

Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun

“Yes,” she confirmed in a small whisper. “I am.”

A new day has...come

Robert was so happy and grateful that he instantly wrapped Elaina up in a huge embrace. “What happened?” he asked. “What was that in the park?”

Elaina shook her head as she pulled away. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” she stated. “Believe me.”

Where it was dark now there's light
Where there was pain now there's joy

Robert nodded and hugged her tightly. “I am sorry.”

Where there was weakness, I found my strength

“What for?” asked Elaina as she buried her head into his shoulder.

All in the eyes of a boy

“For being a jerk,” he answered solemnly.

‘Robert-” Elaina began as she pulled away slightly, but she never got to finish her statement because Robert swooped in and gave Elaina a soul crushing, passionate kiss.

Hush, love

I see a light in the sky
Oh, it's almost blinding me
I can't believe
I've been touched by an angel with love

“Elaina-” he began, breathless as he pulled away.

Let the rain come down and wash away my tears

“Call me Jane,” his angel stated, her blue eyes twinkling brightly. “I like that better. Don’t you?””

Let it fill my soul and drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun
A new day has...

Robert nodded. “I do like it…my Jane.”

Let the rain come down and wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun

A new day has...

“My dear Jane,” he whispered as he held her close. “My angel…”

Come

Hush, now.

I see a light in your eyes.

All in the eyes of a boy

I can’t believe I’ve been touched by an angel with love.

I can’t believe I’ve touched by an angel with love.

“I love you Robert,” she stated as she caressed his cheek. “So much.”

Robert smiled. “I love you too.”

Hush now,

A new day

Hush now

-THE END-

AN) Hello there readers! Yes, this is done. And may I say that it's kinda odd for this story to be done considering how long it's been rambling around in my head. I should say that the story jumped into my head when I was in Ottawa with Encounters with Canada a program that brings students from all over Canada for a certain theme. Mine was the arts and on one of the nights there, while writing in the journal that my new boyfriend (now fiancee) had given me and listening to the Evenesence CD that he had burned for me...this story came into my head.

Of course, it's first couple incarnations started in another world all together but I felt that it would be better in our world. It was also the plot of my first National Novel Writing Month attempt but I gave up after eight thousand words. But now it's done...and I have to let ya'll know that it is an odd feeling indeed to be finished a story that has been on your mind for so long.

Oh and in case anyone's interested...I write to music. And I felt with this story being placed in our world that including the songs that I was writing per chapter would be a good idea. Hoped you enjoyed those songs as much as I did though I take NO credit for the lyrics. None, what so ever!

And I must say though, thank you to dear Gemema for reviewing. Hun- your reviews always make me smile. Thank you.

As for what's next? Well I've dug out a story that I was working on last year this time, it was almost done but I never finished it. I'm re-writing that one and I will be posting it in the next couple days or so (maybe) and I hope that you all will like it.

Till then, happy reading!

-Anjirika
