Set To Rise III
Chomping down on my breakfast I went right back into relax mode. I sipped on my coffee and slowly became a little bit more coherent and awake enough to actually think about what the demon had said to me. Something bigger was finally coming and I was ready. I had been waiting for this a very long time. I never knew how boring my life was until I actually received missions well worth my time. I used to have a partner named Tim. He wasn’t an actual hunter, although he was a freelance killer. He used to be a vigilante that hunted down criminals that got away with their crimes. I let him work with me because I needed somebody who wasn’t afraid to break all of the rules. Tim was strong for an 18 year old. He could have gave me a run for my money in the training room. When he died I changed a lot. Now nothing phases me anymore. Trust me, when somebody close to you gets killed right in front of you, your stomach and heart become stronger. I, since his death, have been a blank slate, just going through the motions, nothing could even change the expression on my face. Even I knew that I was a new man. A man dead on the inside, searching for a feeling once more. News of something big coming was enough to jolt me and motivate me once more.
I miss Tim, I have emotion enough to know that.
Cleaning up my breakfast there was a knock at my door. I ran over quickly and undid all thirteen deadbolts and opened to find my trainer standing there with books and knives in his hand.
“Are you ready?” he asked.
“What for?” I
replied inquisitively. Is it possible he knew that a demon had paid
me a visit about the new moon?
“We must go through vigorous
training and research if we want to beat this guy.”
I could always count on my trainer to hear things through the grapevine before anybody else. As the hunter I never had time to really explain to anybody what was going on because as soon as I heard about what was going on it was already time for me to deal with it.
I took a pile of books from his hands, and motioned him to follow me into the study. I dropped the books down on the table and a cloud of dust erupted into the air.
“My god man, how old are these?” I said coughing my lungs out as I breathed in the dust.
“Not that old
actually, but they were in the section of the library that nobody
really uses, not even the librarians go back there.”
I looked
at the cover of one of the books.
“How To Stop the Apocalypse, Beating the Damned, Hunter Folklore…really nobody touches these books, that’s a surprise.
He rolled his eyes in response to my sarcasm, which I usually gave out. He always has told me that I never cared about the cause as much as him. Believe me, I did care about being the hunter, but come one, after being the hunter for this long you lose the enthusiasm that you had in the beginning.
We were reading the books at hand when I heard another crash upstairs.
“Oh you’ve got to
be kidding me.” I said angered that I never get five god damn
minutes to relax. I stood up, and ran upstairs. Rummaging through my
fridge was a Mongrel Demon, also known as the scavenging demon. They
are the only demon that don’t eat human skin or brains as a
delicacy, they enjoy cold pizza and other delectable leftovers.
“Just what do you think your doing in my fridge Mongrel?” I
said clenching the knife I had brought up with me.
“Oh there you are.” He said. “I’m supposed to bring this to you.”
He reached his hand out and in it was a crimson stone set in a gold ring, the gold ring resting on a silver chain.
“It’s beautiful but I’m actually already seeing someone.”
The demon looked confused, he obviously didn’t get my joke.
“It’s your only chance.” He said with a serious look on his face.
Mongrel demons normally have a fun sly smile, but this one was definitely serious and definitely on a mission.
“My only chance at what?” I asked.
“Winning.” He said.
I grabbed the stone and clenched it in my hand, then stabbed the Mongrel demon in the neck. Sure he’s helping but he is a demon and I do have a life mission to kill these kind of things. I probably should have asked him who sent him, but I didn’t care at that particular moment. My eyes were fixated on the hypnotizing colors of the stone. “Winning…” I echoed.
