Okay, I know this is more morbid than my other stuff. But I really like this idea.

Together in Love, Life, and Death

The nurse peeks in
And looks at the old couple

Maybe it was fate
That they ended up here
Same day,
Same place

She can see
That they are still in love
That she was once beautiful
That he was once handsome
The nurse
Smiles a sad,
Sad smile

The woman
Her hair, long and silver
Splayed out behind her head
Sprawled out over the bleached pillow
Her withered hand
Stretched out,
holding the hand
Of her true love

Her mouth opens,
She takes a breath
To tell him something
- maybe untold secrets
or broken promises -
She takes a breath

The monitor accelerates
And then, Mere seconds later,
The beeping stops
Her body, Once young and healthy,
Is now stiff and cold

He holds her hand
As if it were his lifeline
His face showing emotion
For the first time
In weeks
He exhales

And the monitor goes flat

For him as well

The nurse
She stands
Silent tears streaming down her face
She unplugs the monitors
And walks out of the room
Soundlessly shutting the door behind her
To leave the couple
In peace
