The Girl With the Yellow Hair

The little girl
Is curled up
On the squeaky,
Rubbery plastic
Of the examination table

Tears run down her face
Her long, yellow hair
Is matted
As though
She hasn’t brushed it
In days

The nurse’s heart breaks
From the sad sight in front of her
She wants to help

So badly;

Wants to punish
The horrible people
Who had done this.

The little girl
With the golden hair
With the deep scratch
In her cheek
And the footprint
On her lower back

She’s terrified
Of the world
And of the nurse

But who could blame her?

Sometimes the world
Just doesn’t make any sense

The nurse wishes
That she could do more
Than give the little girl
Some stickers,
And a lollipop

Do more than make
The necessary phone call
Do more than watch
The tall men in suits

Come

And take her away
