Chapter One

The first day

The first thing I remember is Fellri Woodcroft, the most beautiful girl in school winking at me. I didn't know her name at the time, but it was great.

The second thing I remember is that she was surrounded by guys, all drooling over her, the third? All the commotion, as if someone turned on a thousand forges.

Everyone yelling and screaming. I will never forget that moment my eyes and hers met, her eyes twinkled like smiling sapphires, her hair like a deep brown waterfall.

The only thing that ruined it was when someone shoved me off my feet from behind- I was mortified.. but when I got up..

When I came to I saw Fellri through a blurry mass, I soon realized as water. I raised my head and was instantly prompted with questions.

"Who are you" seemed to come up the most. "I'm Ranz, Ranz Doornoq" I said and she smiled, "No wonder you got slammed."

I couldn't stop looking at her.. stealing glances, it was like some invisible force commanded my eyes. From her perfectly proportioned chest to her legs.

Her face totally stunned me. She caught me on a number of occasions, but instead of calling me the pervert I was she'd just smile and pretended not to notice.

her legs were so shapely, so feminine.. her eyes would pierce you. Her butt was so.. perfect. so.. alluring, it was even big. Something about her brought every guy coming,

wanting more. Her self confidence? She was beautiful yes, but still.. I was unsure of.. why. When she walked away.. I saw her tight denim move.. my knees went weak..

and my fingers numb. i left the pond to own way. I head across the field and went into the large wooden school. It was like nothing I'd ever seen! A big ornate staircase,

rose up on the right hand side. I continued on the left- i kept on going straight, there was so much vandalism everywhere- All over! And that wasn't the end of it.

A large bell rang that hurt my somewhat sensitive ears, a teacher came and ushered my into a rather over-ornate office. Everything looked so sturdy, the teacher led me to a small room.

It had a big circular, wooden table made from ash, like everything else in the school. The desk was the only object that had different colors, it was made from oak.

A man was writing on various papers and glanced up at me. The smile he had was slightly unnerving as he stood up- he was ta-all. He even towered over me!

"Ranz is it? well.. have a seat Ranz." I sat in one of the ash chairs, closest to the door should this creepy guy try anything. "Do you know why you here Ranz?"

I nodded, not wanting to show any particular courage- it always got me in trouble. "A little louder please?" he knows me, he is trying to get me to talk... not going to happen..

"Mr. Ranz please speak up." I decide I'll satisfy him this time around but it won't be so easy in the future. "I'm here because every other school thinks I'm stupid"

I gave a small smile, unfortunately the teacher... man.. person.. did the same thing. "I am Mr. Folsborogh, your headmaster." I give a slow, small nod.

"You will do what I say, regardless of whether or not you enjoy it. Do you understand?" You wont make me be yours to command I think.

I'm not about to let anyone rule me like this man demands, ever. "I understand, you want me to be your personal slave, which will never happen, no matter what."

The man gave a grin and leaned toward me. "I will enjoy breaking you boy, now be gone."

--

I opened the dusty old oak door that led into my home. My step-mother immediately gave me a hard, unforgiving glare. "How dare you defy us, and your headmaster!"

I leaned back a bit, on the ball of my left heel. "Your grounded for a month! and you lucky I'm nice enough to feed you!" I trudged to the staircase rather slowly,

enjoying my last few moments of freedom. I was right by the door only to be stopped by my stepmother again.. "I'm not finished!" I turned around tiredly,

to be met with a furious fatty famished upon our creaking fir bench. Fir was a nice wood, bouncy, softer then most woods- "Don't you dare walk away from me when I'm talking!

again, ever!" I wiped my nose with the middle knuckle of my index finger and was told abruptly to do my chores. "All you care about is your damn birthday!" my dad sat at his workbench.

He sat there shriveling to my step-mothers iron fist. There were alot of things I wanted to say right then, but I didn't.. I don't really know why.. but I just trudged slowly, towards the kitchen.

"Make it spotless" my mom had said countless times. Then I realized I called her mom- Disgusted with myself I trudged blearily on. On and on to meet with horrible fate.

I was met with dirty dishes and disgusting counters as I pulled out my cloth and brush from the old cupboard. I couldn't wait for my birthday.. when I find out what element I command..

When I find out how powerful, what potential, what...everything.. I found myself thinking of fire.. redemption, to break free of this place.. fire was frowned upon though-

Our ancestors supposedly used it to burn the village to cinders, we had to start all over. "If not for the fire wielders we'd be prospering right now!" said my father in the past.. A tenth birthday was different, everything is so tense, the air so think one could hardly breathe. When you turn ten, you find out what element, how much potential.. everything, right down to how you'd stack up against others.. It was extremely important to any kid. My parents frowned on it though,

“I don't wan' any o' that” my father said whenever he was drunk.. I slept sound that night though... somehow.
