Adventures of Ranz

Birthday.. And then some

When I woke up I found it rather strange. The air wasn't the typical tenth birthday, it was actually rather relaxed.

When my foot, as soon as my foot, just grazed the top of the bottom step of the stairway, I heard my step-mother call.

“I'll have none of this magic business” but it even sounded different- firm, with what seemed like a hint of respect.

According to tradition, I didn't have to go to school today- thank Shal'Faerik. At last! I'd become a man!

I know, it sounds kinda weird like that.. but after this birthday, I'm a half-citizen. When I reach twenty I become a full citizen!

I can do most of what the adults can do. I can't drink, or vote, but I'm allowed to smoke, and I don't have a curfew anymore.

For some reason, I felt like something bad was about to happen.. It was just sort of a.. gut feeling. I dunno why.. I reached the top of the stairs and head towards my room. I sat on my bed cross-legged and concentrated. After a few interruptions of step-mother whining about something.. I cycled through the elements. Earth... Water... Light... Dark... Air...

That's when it happened- I focused on fire and suddenly the world around me was red. I heard my step-mother screaming..

I reeled wondering what had happened.. The whole place is getting sucked inward.. the walls were bending, breaking.

The floors were morphing, being deformed beyond repair.
