Coffee Shop Fiasco
Canto 1
Oh, Goddess of Patience, your temples abandoned,
Your attentions never awakened.
Hear this tale of gods and demons,
And send your inspired battalions.
Your fellow creature, an idol of old,
Has suffered great insult, as was foretold.
The lovely Jenny, of divine beauty,
Was taken to Oracle, on parental duty,
To unveil the length of the golden thread
And when fair Jenny would be dead.
Pythia, in a voice quite blunt,
Cried out the details of said affront.
If you go to the Coffee Shop,
Your status could have a potential drop.
As you are reaching for the java wine,
A monstrous demon shall cut in line!
Jenny, quite typical of her gender,
Hands forming “W”, cried “Whatever!”
The walk home was quite morose,
Her mother’s tears grandiose.
Her father cried a curse to the sky,
“Why my daughter, Why, Why?”
Her parents’ thoughts deep in prayer,
Jenny turned on her .mp3 player.
Walking to the steady beat of Queen,
She ignored her parents’ lamenting scene.
Canto 2
The day was beautiful, perfect for walking,
When Jenny came upon her friends talking.
“What shall we do?” they wailed and cried,
“We would be lost if you died!”
“Let’s go out” Jenny consoled,
“To a place where drinks are sold.”
They ran away, those nymphly sprites,
To the shop, Marguerites.
The building shone with beauty and grace,
Glistening like Apollo’s face.
It was the best place to be,
With all the popular kids, you see.
Jenny and her posse sauntered in,
And heard the sound of a violin.
A lonely minstrel, in the corner,
With all the looks of a foreigner,
Softly played a mournful song
Which, here, didn’t belong.
He sang of a daughter all betrayed,
And the misery of that maid.
His good advice went through and through
Jenny’s ears, it verily flew.
She rolled her eyes, and clicked her tongue,
Thinking to herself, “Go bust a lung”
She got in line with her gaggle of girls,
Twisting with fingers their gorgeous curls.
What should she order this lovely day?
A frappuccino or a latte?
Canto 3
Jenny stood, heart a-flutter,
For the person before had a stutter.
The unfortunate soul was trying to order,
But couldn’t, due to the speech disorder.
Jenny stood, her foot a-tap,
Watching the plight of the mis’rable chap.
Just when she thought that she would burst,
Finally, it was time to quench her thirst.
She stepped forward with anticipation,
Feeling such extreme elation,
Her luscious lips parted to speak,
When suddenly, there was a shriek.
Jenny, exclaiming in indignation,
Vocalized her negation.
For, just as prophesy said,
Someone stood in her stead.
Someone had taken her place,
Someone was in her space.
Canto 4
Fuming, fussing, and starting to cry,
Tears of pure fury in her eye.
Jenny listened as the usurper spoke,
Wishing his throat she could choke.
The demon in question leaned on the bar,
Acting everything like a Czar.
Blatantly flirting with the cashier,
Asking to take her out for a beer.
Tapping her foot once again,
Thoughts of murder in her brain,
Jenny politely cleared her throat,
Then she said, this I quote,
“It seems, sir, that you have cut.
What do you think you’re doing, what?”
The slimy demon about-faced
And placed his hands upon his waist.
“Hey there Sugar, why you irate?
Let’s you and me go on a date.”
Silence fell throughout the room,
Prequel of his impending doom.
The birds outside stopped their song,
And asked each other what was wrong.
The winds died down, the sun fled,
Hearts completely full of dread.
Two insults this creature had given,
For which he would never be forgiven.
Jenny’s posse formed behind her,
This slimy creep they would conquer.
Fire verily flew from their eyes,
Hungry for the man’s demise.
They would send him down to Charon,
And Hell would be his new environ.
Yet, the demon didn’t even pause,
He just said, ‘Withdraw your claws.’
This final insult thrown in her face,
Jenny dealt a blow full of grace,
Once on his nose, then his eye,
All social norms she did defy.
A knee someplace brought him down,
So he saw her upside-down.
“Learn some manners.” She replied,
“Run away and nurse your pride.”
She then ignored him, and ordered her drink,
Never wondering what people would think.
Canto 5
But think they did, of what she was,
And into society came her flaws.
Apparently, she’s not eloquent,
And stumbles ‘round like an elephant.
She doesn’t wash every day,
And barely uses hair spray.
All these whispers were foundation,
That crumbled Jenny’s reputation.
Now she sits at home, alone,
And no one rings her on the phone,
For they don’t wish to be seen
With a girl who is so mean.
If only she had had more patience,
And not reacted with exacerbescence.
And now, you see, the tale is done,
A good grade I hope I have won.
Writing couplets was my lot,
And it was harder than I thought!
