She kissed boys when she loved them

Which tended to be often;

Be the cause a fleeting smile,

Or a clever thought,

Or just how nice their expressions were when their faces happened to be close.

...

She never sought a one true love

For fear his kiss would sap her love

And dry her heart away.

...

She once climbed to the roof of a church

And asked God if he had seen a kiss of lasting love,

But he never answered.

...

She screamed and kicked the wall.

...

A boy who often kissed girls heard a scream as he passed the church.

He climbed to the roof

Where she was now singing to the gray sky.

...

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

He sat beside her

And sang along.

...

It began to rain

So he took her into the church,

Where they fell asleep in the pews

To the sound of the rain hitting stained glass windows.

...

When the girl woke up the boy was staring at her;

Face as close and lovely as anything.

...

He touched her face,

Cool and soft.

...

She stood up and walked home in the chill rain

And never saw him again.
