“Julian. Mind control.” Eve stared at the boy who sat himself across from her. She could barely see his eyes from behind his shaggy black hair. He had the most adorable grin on his face, though and Eve could tell he was waiting for a response.
“Eve. Curses.” Eve looked at ground and then faced him again. She was technically there for curses, but then again not exactly. She decided that he could interpret that however he wanted. The boy named Julian grinned again and so did Eve.
It was orientation day at the so-called ‘academy’ and Eve found herself distraught. To start it off she knew absolutely no one, she was across the country from her family, and the worst part of all, she finally had to expose her darkest secret that she tried so hard to avoid and hide. Julian was still sitting across from her and staring. I wonder if he’s reading my mind right now. I wonder how long he’s been going here. I wonder what his story is, surely it’s nothing compared to mine. Her thoughts consumed her and kept her from making any real conversation, but lucky for Even Julian was the one to initiate the new conversation.
“Where are you from?” Eve sat back while Julian leaned forward.
“Virginia. Where are you from?”
Julian shook his head in one swift movement to get the hair out his eyes. Eve could feel herself staring hard at his face, trying to catch a glimpse of his eyes. She leaned forward a bit but then sat back against the chair when his hair fell back into his face.
“You’re a long way from home, but it’s okay, you’ll adjust. With a few good friends this place doesn’t seem all that bad.” Eve wondered if he was implying that they would be friends, “Oh, I’m from Surry.” That would explain the accent, Eve thought. They sat there awkwardly as people passed by, gathering with old friends and chatting about their schedules. Hm, maybe Julian and I have classes together. He seems about my age.
“Uh, to be completely honest, this is my first year here and I’m totally lost. Could you explain the way things run around here?” Eve saw Julian smile again and her relaxed.
“I could tell you were new. Usually, the people here settle in immediately so they can head off to Vantage Point.”
“What’s Vantage Point?” Eve asked.
“It’s this little place in town, not too far from here. It was abandoned years ago, it used to be an old club in the 20’s but since it’s in the bad part of town no one ever renovated it after the Depression. A few years ago a group of students from here cleaned it up, mostly with the help from the telekinesis kids. No one knows about it but the students here.” Eve couldn’t help but think that this was a party school; after all, placing teenagers with powers into one school should be better than your average party.
“Sounds like an exciting place.” Julian nodded and then pulled at the collar of this button up.
“Oh, I’m sorry. You wanted to know about the school, am I right?” Julian questioned. Eve nodded and put her full attention onto Julian.
“Well, it’s basically like any other school. Excluding that fact we only learn about our powers and how we can ‘help the world’ with them. Classes are in the Sir Grant building and in the Sir Frances building. We’re in Sir Frances right now. Your class schedule should have a map on it and a key to your dorm room.” Eve reached into her bag and pulled out a packet and emptied it onto the table.
Julian picked up the pamphlet and Eve picked the key attached to a rubber key chain.
She looked at the key chain and read the lettering aloud, “Jenson.” Julian looked up from the pamphlet and explained how that was her dorm building, the same as his. Eve watched him read the booklet but she still hadn’t seen his eyes. She wondered if he could see anything.
“Right then, your classes are here.” Julian placed the paper in front of her and pointed to a list of classes. Eve read them to herself, History of Curses, Cursing: How to, Witches of The Past, Control, Reverse The Curse, and P.E. Those last two should be interesting. “We have one together; Control.” Eve beamed.
“Um, why do we have gym?” Eve couldn’t help but ask. She thought that she left that embarrassing class at her normal school in Virginia.
Julian laughed and then put all her stuff back into the manila envelope, “Don’t all schools require it?” They both laughed and continued talking about the classes. The hall was still crowded with a lot of students and there was even one levitating with a group of friends. What an odd school. Eve scanned the room and noticed so many students and wondered about all their powers. Surely, they all had unique ones. Eve couldn’t help but resent the fact that she had powers with an exception. It’s so unfair. Eve thoughts were full of detest for her power. She wanted nothing more than to go home. Out of the corner of her eye, Eve saw a girl sit down two seats down from her. She looked at Julian and he noticed too. ‘Talk to her.’ He mouthed. He was right; Eve needed more friends.
“Hi. I’m Eve.” The girl’s brilliant red eyes shot up at Eve and then she smiled nervously.
“I’m Marielle.” The girl didn’t calm down and pretty soon she look completely and utterly paranoid.
“So, um, what’s your pow-“ Before Eve knew it, it seemed that she was sitting in front of a mirror. She was seeing herself. Marielle had turned herself into Eve. Oh, so that’s her power. That’s really, interesting.
Marielle crossed her legs in the chair and the covered her eyes with her hands. A few seconds later she was herself again. “Sorry, Sorry! I don’t know how to control it! Just a few moments ago I transformed into a boy I bumped into on my way to the bathroom.” Eve giggled and she heard Julian chuckle too.
“It’s okay.” Eve couldn’t stop laughing, but she didn’t feel bad for laughing at Marielle because she was laughing too and she had seemed to calm down a bit. “So, um. Right, I’m Eve and that’s Julian. My power is curses.”
Marielle’s eyes got huge and then Eve stopped laughing. “You have the power of curses? I mean; I’m just shocked. I’ve never met anyone with that before. So, have you ever cursed someone before?” Eve tensed and then saw Julian slide into the chair next to him, obviously interested in her answer. Marielle’s blood eyes were glued to Eve’s gray ones. What should I say? Well, I’ve already told a few white lies.
“No. Never have.” Marielle and Julian didn’t say anything and neither did Eve. I’ll never tell.
“Room 316, 316, 316, 316.” Eve kept repeating to herself as she walked down the hall, avoiding girls and guys just hanging out in the hallway. As she roamed the halls, looking for her dorm, she couldn’t help but notice all the students. There was a group of students sitting in a circle and every now and again they would laugh out loud. Must be mind readers. Wasn’t that what Julian had? I wonder where his dorm is.
And of course, a school will be a school, at the end of the hall there were three or four boys sitting in chairs with some rolled up substance hanging out their mouths. They all at one time snapped their fingers and out came fire, lighting their cigarettes. Eve kept walking forward, trying to find her dorm. Where the heck is room 316?
“Over there.” A voice said. Eve turned around but there was no one there. Since there was no verification on exactly where ‘over there’ was, Eve kept walking forward.
“You’re going the wrong way.” The voice said again, but this time it giggled, obviously a girl’s voice. Eve looked around again and still saw no one looking back at her, or even noticing that she was there. But, she listened to the voice nonetheless and turned around and headed back the other way. And, before she knew it Eve had arrived at room 316. Opening the door she was immediately greeted by a tall brunette with braces and a huge smile on her pretty face.
“You finally found the room. Thank god. I could hear you whining about it. You’re welcome for the directions, by the way.” Mind reader, Eve thought.
The dorm was big and had two twin size beds and a bunk bed. Great, I have three roommates. This should be fun. The brunette looked over at Eve and laughed, obviously hearing what she had thought.
Eve closed the door behind her and waked towards the first single bed.
“Mine.” The brunette said sternly. Eve backed away and headed towards the other single bed. “I’m Gwen, but everyone calls me Mindy.”
“I’m Eve.” Eve threw her bag onto the floor and plopped onto the bed but was throw off. Eve fell to the floor with a thud and screamed. Eve was even more confused when she heard another scream as well.
“Gosh! Mindy! Why didn’t you tell her? You ruined my nap.” A mysterious voice shouted. Eve was still on the floor and was looking at Mindy, but all she did was point at the bed Eve was just on. Before Eve or Mindy could respond, a girl appeared on the bed and was sprawled on it wearing pajamas. Invisibility, nice; didn’t see that one coming. Eve laughed at her thought and got up from the floor.
“Sorry about that. I didn’t see you there.” The girl laughed at Eve’s irony and stretched.
“It’s okay. I’m guessing you’re our final and fourth roommate?” The girl asked.
“Yeah. I’m Eve.” The sleepy girl got up and faced her. Her short hair was everywhere and her eyeliner was smudged.
“I’m Alyssa. So, that was a great way for you to find out what my power was. Sorry, didn’t catch your name. Eve, was it?” Eve nodded and then placed her stuff on a bunk, “Well, if you don’t mind I’m going back to sleep. Classes start tomorrow and I need all the rest I can get so I can do all my work.”
“Not true. She’s just lazy like that.” Mindy said. Alyssa threw an extra pillow at Mindy and then closed her eyes to sleep. Eve sat down on the bottom bunk and was about to lie down when Mindy cleared her throat. Eve looked up and then was face to face with another girl who had her lips scrunched together. She came out of nowhere, Eve thought.
“Sorry honey, but that’s my bunk. You get the top.” Eve got up and watched the girl sit down on the bed and pulled out a magazine from under the pillow. Eve just stood there awkwardly. I didn’t even hear the door open. Maybe she has invisibility too.
“Nope. Good guess, but no. Missy has the gift of teleportation.” Mindy said, answering to Eve's thoughts.
“Oh. That’s cool.” Eve climbed up the ladder of the bunk bed and then stretched herself over the mattress. This was going to be her new home for the next how many months and she might as well get used to it. Ever since her mother found out that Eve had a ‘special talent’, she had dedicated herself to teaching her how to use it. Once her mother realized that she couldn’t really help her she looked around for other people with ‘talents’ such as Eve’s. And then she got word of this secret academy, as soon as she found out Eve was eligible she put her on a plane and wished her luck. Eve didn’t want to go to a school for freaks and much less be considered one of those freaks. Eve just wanted to go home.
“Eve, you never told us what your power was.” Missy said below. Eve opened her eyes and saw Mindy and Alyssa staring at her.
“Curses.” Eve said simply, but her one word was followed by the questions people loved to ask.
“You mean, you curse people? Like spells and stuff like that?” Alyssa asked.
“Exactly.” Eve said. “I curse people.”
