Ok, so you know those types of people that light up a room with their smile as soon as they walk through the doors? Or the people who everyone flocks to? The people that all are insanely jealous of, but you can’t help but want to be their friend?
Yeah well that’s not me. Sorry to disappoint you.
Nope, instead I’m the girl sitting right over there with an irritated scowl on her face. See me? I’m right there in between the girl in her cheer uniform and the other girl texting away on her cell.
Why am I irritated? Well if you eavesdropped on the conversation going on around me for just five seconds, you would figure it out.
“Oh my gosh! I cannot believe prom is this weekend. I am so excited!”
No…really? I couldn’t tell.
“Lizzie, can we please not talk about prom again?” I asked sighing.
Lizzie rolled her eyes and flicked her long chemically straightened blonde hair over her shoulder.
“Ella, you’re just bitter that everyone has a date except you.”
She thinks she’s clever. How cute.
“Yeah…that’s it.” I paused. “Or maybe, just possibly, I am beyond tired of you talking about prom every two seconds. I mean you have been talking about it for like three months.”
No lie.
“Look Ella, just because you’re pissed that no guy asked you to prom doesn’t mean that none of us can talk about prom in your presence.” She huffed annoyed. “Besides, I got you a date remember? I told you David wanted to go with you.”
“He’s like three feet tall!”
I’m 5’10.
“So? Ella, stop being so picky. That’s your problem. You’re standards are too high.”
“Well yeah, compared to yours which are practically dragging the floor…just like your IQ.” I smirked. I just couldn’t help myself.
“Ha Ha Ella. You are just hilarious.” She glared. “Anyways, are you going on the party bus with us?” she asked me.
“Yes. You know this. I already gave Ally the money.” I told her.
“Whatever Ella, no need to be so snappy. Are you PMSing? That would explain the zit on your chin.”
“Can you two please stop fighting for just one day?” I looked to my left. Remember the girl in the cheer uniform?
“Oh Lia, stop being so melodramatic.” Lizzie sighed exasperatedly. “We are not fighting. We are merely conversing. I know you are quite sheltered darling, but there is a difference.” She replied in a sweet as honey voice.
Which was obviously fake.
“Whatever Lizzie. So Ella, what does your dress look like?” Lia asked me.
Great…more prom talk. Just what I wanted.
“It’s hot pink. It’s chiffon. Uh…its flowy-ish, and it stops a little above my knee. Oh and it has a low V-neckline.”
“Oh wow Ella. That sounds so pretty!” Lia gushed.
I smiled. “Thanks Lia.”
“So who’d you say you were going to prom with Ella?” I heard from my right along with the sound of gum being smacked.
“I’m not going with anyone.” I responded flatly.
“Where have you been Chels?” Lia asked annoyed. “We have already been over the fact that no guy asked Ella to prom. Why do you have to bring it up again? You know it’s got to be depressing for her. I mean she is the only one in our group without a date.” Lia finished and smiled sympathetically at me.
Was that supposed to make me feel better?
I managed a weak smile back.
I have to get out of here.
“I’m gonna go get a snack from the canteen. Anyone want to come with?” I asked standing up from the table.
“I can’t eat anything fatty until after Saturday. I’m never going to fit in my dress as it is.” Chels answered.
Funny…so why are you eating pizza?
“So are y’all all on diet mode until after Saturday?” I asked amused.
“Well of course Ella. We do want to look good. Don’t you?” Lizzie asked me eyeing me up and down. “I mean aren’t you worried about gaining weight?”
“Uh no. My dress is a little loose anyways.”
“Right.” She said as if she wasn’t really convinced. “Well it’s not like you actually eat anything anyways.” She laughed.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Oh come on Ella.” She rolled her eyes irritated. “Everyone knows about your little secret.”
“Huh? What are you talking about Lizzie?”
I looked around at Chelsie and Lia, but neither one of them would look me in the eye.
“Nothing Ella. Absolutely nothing.”
“Whatever Lizzie.” I mumbled as I turned around and left the cafeteria.
I completely forgot about my earlier plans of heading to the canteen. I was just so annoyed I couldn’t think straight. So, instead I walked towards the courtyard. I saw a bench that was in the shade, and I decided to sit there. I pulled out my I-pod, put on some Train, and tried to relax. I took out the book I was currently reading, The Catcher in the Rye, and began reading from where I had last left off.
Not even ten minutes later I feel someone tap me on the shoulder. I jump not expecting it and turn down my music.
“You know I could take that away from you and not give it back until the end of the week right?”
I look up to see Mr. Scott standing in front of pointing to my I-pod.
“Well…are you going to?” I ask praying he wouldn’t.
“Well that’s going to depend Miss Montgomery.” He grinned at me.
“On…” I prompted.
“If you have good taste or not.”
I laughed.
“Mr. Scott, are you planning on raiding my I-pod?”
“If you want to keep it, you will let me.”
I sighed over dramatically.
“I guess I’ll have to, won’t I?”
I scooted over on the bench so he could sit next to me and handed it to him.
Okay, so maybe I should tell you a little about Mr. Scott. He’s an English teacher here. I’ve never had him as a teacher, but my brother has.
Oh yeah, and he’s gorgeous. I’m not just saying that either. I’m one of the pickiest girls ever, and I can honestly say that he is in the top five sexiest guys.
He’s tall and has a fit body. He has blonde hair, which right now is cut pretty short and baby blue eyes. He smirks a lot, and I love it. He’s really young too, and he acts nothing like a teacher.
I was pulled out of my thoughts by his deep voice.
“You’ve got some pretty good stuff on here, but Britney Spears?” He asked with a disgusted look on his face.
“Hey!” I cried. “She was my first CD. Once a Britney fan, always a Britney fan. She’s just stuck right now. She’ll pull through.” I said confidently.
He laughed.
“Okay, whatever you say.” He continued to chuckle. “You have my seal of approval, and you are able to keep your I-pod.”
“Thank you oh so much.” I replied with a big smile.
“So prom’s this weekend.” He smiled.
“Yep. This weekend.”
More prom talk…fabulous.
“Are you going?” he asked me and I nodded. “Who’s the lucky guy?”
“I’m going solo.” I told him trying to keep my voice light. The last thing I needed was for a teacher to feel sorry for me.
“Really? I find that hard to believe.”
“Why is that?” I asked confusedly.
He shrugged. “Well I just figured a pretty girl like you would have guys lined up.”
I burst out laughing. I was laughing so hard, I just about had tears running down my cheeks.
A pretty girl like me?
“Yes, well that just isn’t the case.” I replied after my laughter finally settled down.
“I’ll be there.”
“You’ll be at prom?” I asked to clarify what he had just said.
“Yep. I’m going to be a chaperone. Gotta make sure no one spikes the punch. Stuff like that.”
I burst out laughing once again.
“I am so sorry.” I told him through my laughs. “I mean I don’t even want to go, and I’m a student.”
“You don’t want to go to prom?” He sounded shocked. “I thought that was something every girl fantasized about along with their wedding.”
“Yeah, well not me.” I told him.
“You’re different.”
I felt offended, and I could feel my face getting hot.
“That’s a good thing. I like that about you.”
“Oh umm t-thanks.” I stuttered out.
“The bell’s about to ring. I should probably get going. Have a good rest of the day Miss Montgomery. See you this weekend.” He told me as he got up and walked out of the courtyard.
“Yeah, see ya.” I mumbled.
Not even a second later, the bell rang signaling that lunch was over.
I might not mind going to prom after all.
