Just a little songfic about child abuse, using the song “Dear Mr. Jesus” written by…well, I don’t really know xD.
I’m sitting in my desk at school next to the grungiest kid in school. Her hair is long and scraggly, her clothes are too small and holey, and she looked half-starved and half-alive, at that. I know what happened to her. I know what happens when she comes home from school. I know.
Dear Mr. Jesus, I just had to write to you
Something really scared me, when I saw it on the news
A story 'bout a little girl beaten black and blue
Jesus, thought I'd take this right to you.
I walk home, thinking about what I saw yesterday. I was walking home with my new friend, the grungy Sophia Morris. Her mother was screaming at her at her house. “Why is she screaming?” I asked Sophia. Her face is wrinkled with worry. “Just…go away! Before she-“
“Sophia!” Her mother grabs her by the arm. “Who is this?”
Sophia winces. “My friend, Anna.” Her mother grins cruelly. “Come with me, dear little Anna.” Sophia wails. “No! Mommy, you can’t!” Her mother slaps her to quiet her. “Silence! Anna, please come inside.”
I step inside, hoping she won’t hurt me like she did to Sophia. “Why do you have a new friend?” Sophia’s mother mutters to her daughter, gripping Sophia’s arms tightly and making them turn white. “Why? What have I told you? You worthless piece of shit, you don’t deserve friends!”
I race home while I can.
Dear Mr. Jesus, I don't understand
Why they took her mom and dad away
I know that they don't mean to hit with wild and angry hands
Tell them just how big they are, I pray.
Please don't let them hurt your children
We need love and shelter from the storm
Please don't let them hurt your children
Won't you keep us safe and warm.
Why did I run away? Because I was scared? Why doesn’t Sophia run away? I ask myself these questions as I walk into my driveway. I feel terrible for my third-grade friend.
I watch the news again tonight, and the ice breaks about Sophia.
Dear Mr. Jesus, they say that she may die
Oh I hope the doctors stop the pain
I know that you could save her and take her up to the sky
So she would never have to hurt again
Please don't let them hurt your children
We need love and shelter from the storm
Please don't let them hurt your children
Won't you keep us safe and warm.
So Sophia is in the hospital, dying. Because of her mother, because of me. How could I do this to a friend? I…I practically killed a girl! I want to rush into my mother’s arms, but I know I can’t. I don’t deserve it either.
Dear Mr. Jesus, please tell me what to do
And please don't tell my daddy
But my mommy hits me, too.
Please don't let them hurt your children
We need love and shelter from the storm
Please don't let them hurt your children
Won't you keep us safe and warm.
