Emily Day
Emily met the vampire right after he had started to eat her nurse. She was very grateful, because she had never particularly liked the woman, who had made her sit for hours on end against a board that was supposed to make her sit up straight.
"Thank you," said Emily, because she had learned to be polite. "For killing my nurse."
The vampire, of course was rather confused to see a small, pale little girl standing in the doorway not running or screaming or fainting as most humans seemed to do. He gaped a bit, blood and muscle from the dead nurse's neck dripping from his mouth. Emily looked seriously at him for a second, then behind her, back down the stairs. The vampire wondered if she was going to try to run for it. He didn't feel any particular inclination to stop to stop her. He was a rather lazy vampire. But Emily just looked back at him with her big brown eyes and spoke again, evenly.
"I think I'd like to be eaten now," she said, very seriously, because she this was the right thing to do. "If you wanted to, that is." She added this because she had learned to be polite.
The vampire laughed now, spraying blood and meat into the air, and finally spoke to Emily.
"You know that if I ate you, you'd die? You wouldn't turn into a vampire yourself, or any other silly myth your kind have come up with." His bloody eyes twinkled with laughter, and Emily could see herself reflected in them.
"I know." She didn't, but that wasn't what she had meant anyway. Emily tried to explain. "I don't think I deserve a life, the way I'm supposed to spend mine." Because Emily was what they called a Lady, and she saw how the other Ladies spent their lives. It made her sick.
The vampire thought seriously for a moment, tearing off a bloodless arm from his victim and chewing the fingertips. Emily didn't move, didn't flinch, and this made up his mind for him.
"As you can see," he began, gesturing to the lifeless corpse of the nurse," I have my meal tonight. And you are far too small right now to be anything but a snack. So come live with me and help me catch my supper, and one day when you're good-sized I will eat you then."
Emily decided it was a good plan. She said as much. But she made the vampire promise he'd absolutely eat her one day.
The vampire only smiled, and thought of the great luck he had, choosing the manor with the crazy kid.
