-1My Best Friend
Remember when, we never needed each other
Luke tried desperately to grab his toy out of her grubby fat hands. The six-year-old girl that stole his precious Spiderman toy glared at him in a way only little kids could and yanked harder. The teacher, finally noticing their minor scuffle, yanked the toy out of both of their hands and sent them to the time out corner.
Luke, being the precious mama’s boy, sat down and bawled.
Lee, being the hardened toy thief, glanced at him and muttered, “Baby. It’s not like we are big tr-trouble. Stop crying.” Lee sat up and glared at her. He decided at that instant he hated Lee.
The best of friends like sister and brother
Luke glanced down at his beat up Spiderman toy, snorted, and then threw it away. “Baby toys.” He snarled at it. Lee, his best friend, looked up from where she was laying on his bed and laughed when she saw the toy he threw out.
She got up and picked it out of the garbage can. Luke glared.
“Now, now. I know we are moody thirteen year olds now, but this toy is precious. Without it I wouldn’t have known you!” Lee smirked at him. “On second thought, get rid of this old thing! It brings back some pretty painful memories.” She laughed and threw her arms around Luke.
Luke relaxed and hugged her back. She let go of him and bounced on his bed. “So what are our big plans for the weekend?” Luke asked as he continued to clean his closet.
“Actually, I um…” Lee traveled off, embarrassed. Luke looked up at her and raised an eyebrow. “I have a date with Robbie!”
Luke started to understand jealousy for the first time. He never realized he would have to share Lee with another boy.
“He’s not good enough.” He said abruptly and wet back to his closet.
Lee rolled her eyes.
We understood we'd never be alone
“I can’t believe that jerk cheated on me!” Lee stated, slamming her fist on the table. His best friend, who was an idiot for going out with this guy in the first place, was near tears. Luke could not stand seeing her cry. “I thought we got along so well. I thought he changed!”
A guy like him will never change, Luke thought dryly, especially not for some girl he has gone out with for only five months.
“It’s alright, Lee. He is an idiot. I mean, come on, he broke up with one of the most beautiful, wonderful girls in the entire school. I would never cheat on you.” Luke met her eyes.
Just the thought of Luke and her going out caused Lee to bust out laughing. She obviously thought that he was just joking around. Oblivious as she was, she missed the flash of pain in Luke’s brown eyes and how he slightly tensed.
Luke always thought Lee was beautiful, ever since that faithful day three years ago when he realized he had feelings for his best friend.
He stood up quickly and pulled Lee into a hug. She was shocked since Luke was rarely affectionate. “Just know, Lee, I’m always here for you. Always.”
Lee started to cry again.
Those days are gone, now I want you so much
The night is long and I need your touch
Luke stared at where Lee was dancing with another man. They were seventeen now and Lee was convinced she found her “true love” with Travis. Luke has always hated Travis, now he has figured out why he felt that way.
Luke wanted to be the one holding Lee, kissing her, being her boyfriend. He would kill for that chance.
Unfortunately, since he made his promise a little over a year ago, Lee started to drift away from him. She got heavily involved with beer and boys. She was a carefree (slutty), adventurous (too wild for her parents to care) girl (whore).
Luke did not notice all this. He still saw the little girl who got straight A’s and played only with him.
Lee looked up and smiled at Luke. She felt bad about pulling away from him, it hurt her so much, but she realized she was somewhat leading Luke on. She didn’t want that. She waved and winked at him and went back to dancing with Travis.
Don't know what to say
Never meant to feel this way
Luke was shell-shocked. She winked at him.
Luke realized he loved her.
Don't wanna be alone tonight
Lee was drunk and heartbroken. Travis, the God she was worshipping earlier, had dumb her because she was “too wild for him.” Her, too wild! She snorted at the thought.
Luke passed by her and she reached out for him. He was always her security blanket. She rubbed her hand up his back. Luke was shocked at the way his body reacted.
“Why can’t I find a guy for me, Luke?” Lee slurred and pushed her body closer to him. “Why can’t they all be like you? Nice, dependable, sexy…”
Luke, not exactly sober either, kissed her. It wasn’t the best of kisses. But it was the best two severely drunk hormonal teenagers could do while maneuvering their way into the first empty bedroom.
What can I do to make you mine?
Fallen so hard, so fast this time
What did I say, what did you do?
How did I fall in love with you?
Lee woke up in Luke’s arms and freaked. She remembered Travis breaking up with her, but she did not remember this! She swore almost inaudibly. She knew Luke liked her, but she did not really return his feelings for her. She could see herself falling in love with him but…
He lacked danger.
Luke stirred. Time to put in those acting lessons.
“Lee?” Luke mumbled and pulled her closer. He smiled sleepily and kissed her forehead. Lee kept from grimacing.
Luke thought this was how he should start out every morning. Sharing a bed with the girl he loved so desperately for nearly five years now.
Yes, he knew she didn’t have the best rep. And he knew she probably would not stay with him for that long, but for that morning, that brief second of time, she was all his.
Lee was plotting ways to get out of his arms and his life.
I hear your voice and I start to tremble
Brings back the child that I resemble
Five weeks later, Luke was still waiting for a call from Lee. Finally it came.
“Lee? Oh thank God! I was starting to get worried.” Luke was shaking from excitement and nerves. “How are you baby?”
“Oh, I’m f-fine,” Lee said, then quietly, “Stop that! Sorry Luke. Can we meet at Starbucks in like a half hour?”
Luke consented and then went to get ready to meet the girl of his dreams.
I cannot pretend that we can still be friends
Half an hour later, he waited outside of Star bucks with her favorite drink in hand. He peered out the window and his heart jolted when he saw her getting out of a black car.
His heart nearly died when he saw her walking in holding hands with some man.
Lee was slightly amused with the pain in his eyes. She faintly smirked and flipped her hair out. Her smirk widened when she saw him glare at Kevin, her new boyfriend.
“Luke, you look sad. Is something wrong? Oh, this is Kevin, my new boyfriend.” This should get him out of her life.
Luke stared at them and then turned his back to Kevin and addressed Lee. “You know what? If you want to hurt me, fine you have. But at least I’m not some meaningless slut whose only problem is the next drink, the next boy and man who truly loved her. So you want me out of your life? Fine. I’m gone.” He started to walk out of the café. Lee quickly grabbed the drink he brought her and poured it down Luke’s back.
Luke barely made it to the door before he started to cry.
Lee barely made it four years when she realized how much she wanted Luke.
Ooh I wanna say this right
And it has to be tonight
After nearly half a decade, Lee managed to track down her old friend. She needed to see him, to hold him.
She plainly needed him.
She didn’t know what to say or even if she could follow out this plan all the way.
But she knew she was somehow going to show up on his doorstep tomorrow.
Just need you to know
I don't wanna live this life
I don't wanna say goodbye
This was the first time Lee was nervous in awhile. She knocked on the door and took a deep breath. The door crept open and she started when an old woman answer the door.
“Is, uh, Luke here?” She asked.
“No, he’s at church honey. Do you wish to tell him something?” At her nod, the woman continued, “Well, head up to the church then. It’s right down the road you can’t miss it.”
Lee nodded and then drove to the church. She was starting to get a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Luke waited outside of the church. His mom commanded him to wait there until the caterers had arrived. A car pulled into the church and he started to walk towards it.
“Thank you God, they fina…Lee?” His mouth dropped open. There she stood, looking a little forlorn, but just as beautiful as always.
“Luke, I know your shocked, and I know you probably don’t care, but I just have to say this, okay? I was young when I did that to you. And I just now realized that I cannot live without you, and that I love you. I love you so much Luke. I’m a damn fool.” Lee stopped and looked up to see Luke walking away.
The caterers finally pulled in. People started to arrive. Lee still stood in the parking lot. She followed the people in and sat down. She was surprised to see Luke standing at the alter.
The march started and the beautiful bride came out, smiling at Luke. She didn’t listen to the words of the priest, but she snapped to attention when Luke started his vows.
“I once loved a girl a girl with all me heart. It started out with her stealing my toy and me crying. I loved her until the very moment she broke my heart. I still somewhat love her today.” Lee’s hopes started to rise and Luke locked eyes with Lee. “I bet a lot of you are wondering where I am going with this. That girl hurt me so bad, Trish; it is not even funny.
“But looking back on it now, that silly immature girl wouldn’t hold a candle against how I feel with you. You are my everything, my love, my heart. I would not change anything. Not even for a chance to be with this girl. You see, that day we met when I walked out of that Starbucks and crashed into you, was because of her. And I will be eternally grateful to her for bringing me to you. I promise to always love you, to respect you and to try my best to do right by you. I love you, Trish.”
Lee’s heart just broke.
Luke looked at her one last time and smirked before he kissed his bride.
With you I wanna spend the rest of my life…
An: I really should’ve written something for my other stories, but this was nagging me so I had to write it before I ran out of steam. Thanks for reading!
Song: how did I fall in love with you by the backstreet boys.
