“Shepherd,” she said in a low stern voice. “If you don’t leave right now, you are going to regret it…”
“Brianna, please, just listen to me. I didn’t mean it, okay?!” he said quickly, walking backwards and trying to stop her, but it seemed that she didn’t care. It seemed that she would walk over him.
He deserved it. He was a bastard and she wasn’t a bitch. Not, when she didn’t want to. He was a bastard in general. They had despised each other ever since first grade, each of them fighting for the spotlight, each of them fighting for respect. But of course, he wouldn’t stop at just good marks and witty remarks. He wanted playboy fame… no girl should resist him, but there she was. At first he didn’t’ consider even human, but then dared by the others he made the infamous bet. Make Brianna Downing “,future spinster”, fall in love with him. It wasn’t easy, but somewhere between her anger rages, her smiles, her frowns and her undeniable charm; he fell in love with her. All was going well, he would say, but then she had to hear him talking about the bed, or hear his friend, Liam ,to be more exact.
Now he was trying to stop her from running. The girl was still a stubborn mer.
How could she possibly go for it? She actually was thinking that maybe and just maybe he was different. She thought she was harsh and had unfounded prejudices about him, but he proved her, yet again that he was just a proud and selfish boor.
“I don’t care,” she said in an apparently calm and equal tone.
“Just hear me out, Brianna. Give me five minutes. Look, at the beginning it was a stupid bet and I was stupid…”
“Damn right you were! How dare you think I am an object?! I am a person, not a bet. You do not bet on people. I have a personality and an identity!”
“I was…” he tried to say.
“That’s what I thought,” she said and went by him.
He yelled after her, as she reached the center of the school’s main hall. A lot of students turned to look. “Why are you running away?”
She turned on her heels. “I am not running away.”
“You are.”
“No, I’m not. I’m just late for home. I don’t want to waste my time with a slug.”
“For sure…” he said sarcastically. “ I am pretty sure that was exact what you were thinking while you were hovering about the boys’ locker room.”
“How dare you…” she growled.
By that time, a circle of curious students gathered. Liam came jogging and almost bumped into Glenn, making her almost drop her books.
“Liam?” she asked.
“Oh, Glenn…Shit…” he said breathlessly.
“What is happening?” she asked. “Do you know something?”
“Glenn…I…”he mumbled.
“What’s happening here?” Anthony Matthau stepped after the corner. Narrowing his eyes he continued. “What is that guy doing to Brianna?! Bennett, you better start talking, or I’ll start killing!”
That was just Anthony. He had known Brianna ever since they were babies and was her best friend, along side Glenn, of course. He was the one who stood up for her, like the brother she never had. He was a year older and had a little too short temper.
“No, no, no…You see, Anthony, me and Edward, or no, Edward he…”Liam started mumbling.
“Anthony, calm down, let him speak,” Glenn stated, defending her boyfriend. “Where’s Maud, by the way?” she asked of his girlfriend.
“Here I am!” she popped out of nowhere.
“Now, calm down, Anthony…” she said tugging onto his strong arm.
“What’s happening now, Downing, huh?” Edward asked her again.
“Nothing is. You are making a scene, Shepherd. Not that you don’t like making scenes. Oh no, you absolutely adore them. Spotlight’s on you all the time!”
“Stop avoiding the subject! This is always you. When something isn’t going right you change the subject, you slick fox. And you think it always works. But not this time. I am not letting you!” his tone was alamingly determined.
“You have no right to. You had no right to bet one me!” she repeated.
“Bet…?” Anthony asked already tensing, making Liam wince.
“I think you already did enough. Just drop it and let me pass,” she asked him in a tired defeated tone.
“No, I won’t. I am not letting you get away. You act all careless and full of guts. What happened now? Why are you scared?” in moments like these, Edward truly missed the old Brianna.
“I’m not, God damn it! I’m not! You know what? You almost had me going for a minute there, almost, but now I know. You are not going to change, not for me not for anyone. I loved you, you stupid bastard! I did! But all you did was hurt me! So fuck you, Edward. Fuck you!”
People started muttering.
‘Well-known, probably lesbian, Brianna is in love. With the least expected person, Edward Shepherd, infamous playboy, ladies’ man, men’s man, man about town.’
She turned on her heels and went for the door. Edward wanted to run after her, but Anthony got in his way.
“Don’t even think about it.”
“Brianna!” both Glenn and Maud stormed after her.
He looked after her, but she was long gone. Like she said he was just a shallow fool.
I am not so content with this one but it is the following of Shyness and Boldness and my first story Reckless and Irrational. Readers do seem to like it. Most likely I would write another one-shot with the ending of the story before actually starting to write it. It all depends on how much readers like it. I changed her name into Brianna.
