Chapter Two
Shock crossed his face for a moment as my words registered but was quickly replaced with his usual stoic blankness. He pushed himself up so that he was sitting only on the edge of the seat, effectively putting us only inches apart, as I was sitting on the edge, too. His unblinking gaze bored into mine, his hit breath feathering across my face as he whispered, “You,” in response to my open-ended question.
I leaned into him, changing inches into centimeters. Watching his face intently for any reaction, I fell into his eyes, so decadent and fluid like mercury spinning endlessly. They were the most beautiful and mesmerizing things I’d ever beheld or ever would; they fit his namesake so well, mirroring perfectly the frightening electricity he could wield.
I kept moving towards him and my knee bumped his as it slid in between his thighs. A small smile began to curve his lips until suddenly I realized what I was about to do and quickly pushed back into the seat, putting distance between us.
His eyes tightened and narrowed in suspicion at me. “Did you just…? Fuck,” he muttered as he stormed past me off the bus, his face a twisted mask of disgust and contempt. I followed after him, right on his heels, trying to convince him that I hadn’t used my power, that Yop damned ability to convince anyone of anything temporarily. If I really tried, I could even change the fundamental beliefs and morals of anyone. It was because of this curse, this forsaken Yopsend that no one ever believed what I said because for all they knew, I was just manipulating them. The only way for me to convince anyone that I was telling the truth was to use my power. It was a hellish, endless cycle I'd never be free of.
As soon as we were off the bus, he sharply turned back to me, ignoring everything I was saying and trapped me between him and the hard purple shell of the bus. He cut off my excuses as I tried to tell him that I hadn’t controlled what had just happened. “Shut up. Don’t ever, ever pull that shit with me,” he spat in my face, anger contorting his face, marring his features. “I don’t care what they say, I don’t give a fuck. You will never manipulate me.” Small shocks of electricity raced along my nerves from the small, uncontrolled electrical charges he was emitting in his anger. I didn’t think he even realized he was doing it, either way, it was a fitting punishment, him using his power on me because even though I hadn’t, he believed I did and that was all that really mattered in the end.
Trying to hold back my disappointment and useless misery I dropped my head trying to hide my unshed tears and avoid his furious gaze. My shoulders slumped as I realized that just like everyone else, there was absolutely no way for me to convince him that I was innocent of his unjust accusations. How could he know that I wasn’t lying to him or using him? It was the same story, the same problem I’d had to deal with ever since my power had uncovered itself in the trying years of my Furops, the years when everyone’s story persona was revealed and our single “advantage” was revealed. Those horrid years when we’re told what we’re supposed to do for the rest of our lives. I would give anything, trade anyone for their power instead of mine.
I tucked my hands into their pockets and gave a weary sigh, which he must have taken as my consent at his justification. He scoffed and scowled, backing away from me. I looked up at him and said, “I know you don’t believe me, but I didn’t use it. I’m sorry.” His eyes narrowed even more and he moved as if to turn away, but I stopped him and Suess started bubbling out of my mouth, unleashed by my uncontrollable despair, “It’s true, please believe me. I tell you sincerely, my mind is just fine, and I know it quite clearly. I know what is wrong, what is right, and what’s more, quite likely you still want to even the score.” I held out my arms, inviting him to electrocute me in retaliation for sins I hadn’t committed. I held his gaze and lifted my chin, hoping I hadn’t just made a dangerous mistake.
He glanced once at my outstretched arms, rolled his eyes, and began walking away from me. For a moment I thought he was just giving himself room to work when he tossed over his shoulder, “ You coming?”
A/N: Okay, in this one, I used and manipulated to better fit the context the lyrics from Suessical the Musical, which in turn more than likely came directly from a Dr. Suess book.
Oh, and in the parts where she is overcome by Suess, try reading the dialogue out loud the rhyme and rhythm is pretty cool, and will probably make the lines make more sense as to why I used/borrowed those specific words.
I’m not sure if I like the idea for this story, do you think it’s too weird or that I’m just not pulling it off, let me know please. Just review.
