The Shadows lurk behind my eyes

They fill my ears with tricks and lies

With slitted eyes and crooked grins

And poison dripping off their chins

They crawl along the walls and then

When I am fast asleep

And I’ve trusted

That the Lord my soul will keep

They crawl right over to my bed

And the awful’est things start to fill my head

I open my eyes when I hear a sound

I sit right up and then look ‘round

I see them skim

Back up the walls

Under the doorway

Into the hall

The closed windows trap them in my room

I don’t know what I can do

And if they go into the night

To someone else they might cause fright

They hide in corners

And they wait

When I have relaxed

They do not hesitate

To come back over to my bed

And once again start to fill my head

With all my many doubts and fears

And all the shadows reappear

What I did wrong

And all the things I couldn’t find

Nothing comes to stop their song

Running ‘round and ‘round inside my mind

These Shadows lurking behind my eyes

They fill the world with their tricks and lies

Their slitted eyes and crooked grins

That poison trickling down their chins
