you were so cute in your chequered little tie sipping beer through two straws

your feet swinging carelessly inches above the floor & your knees black&blue like a boy's

you gave me a look which clearly meant you were interested

I stared at my shoes which clearly meant I was interested too

but it seemed we were both old-fashioned girls because neither made a move & then

on Sunday what were you doing in church? I saw you through a stained glass kneeling down

praying & I felt an impulse to go in to talk to

you

but eventually I just went on & I wondered the whole week what you were doing in church until

I saw you again yesterday downtown in lipstick & a flower dress efficiently hiding your ungirly knees

walking hand in hand with him

staring at your shoes
