Author's Note: Ah...how much I like this story (from my Junior Year in HS). I like it because of the characters that I made up quickly and the settings. Everything was inspired from my vision when I read Eragon, so I took the village in that story and sort of made my own village with this new character. I might flesh this story out as I want to with "Skies over Egypt". Anyway, please R&R! Thanks.
The Medallion of Golgan
Rain poured down from the heavens in thick heavy sheets. Thunder brewed in the sky, creating a haunting noise that was heard by all inhabitants of the town of Morte. Morte was a small town that resided beneath a mountain range. Inside of the village was a market where villagers would travel every day to buy their supplies for the upcoming week. One certain villager named Luz decided to go to the market one day. Luz, a brave young maiden, was carrying a large basket that her father had provided for her.
“Hello today, Luz!” an old woman said as she entered the village. Luz turned and smiled at the woman.
“Greetings, Mrs. Crombart.”
“What are you here for today, dear?” Mrs. Crombart asked, a warm smiling spreading across her face. Luz looked up, biting her lip in thought.
“Father asked me to come down and get some fresh baked bread, a handful of apples, and some corn from Master Fehr.” She ticked off the items as she said them. Mrs. Crombart waved her into the village and nodded.
“Well, good luck then!” she said, winking at Luz. Luz smiled in return and entered the market and looked around at the different stalls. One man stood inside one of the stalls, leaning on it in boredom. Luz passed several of the stalls until she came to one at the very end of the market. The stall was large and had a sign hanging over the top of it that read “Pan et Maz”. Luz looked around the stall in order to see if anyone was inside.
“Hello?” she inquired, peering inside the darkness. A light flashed on immediately and Luz stood back quickly.
“Ahah, don’t be frightened, missy!” came a gentle voice. A plump woman suddenly appeared in the stall, wearing a tall purple hat and a dark green gown. Luz smiled and nodded her head at the woman.
“Hello Momby!” Luz exclaimed as she breathed heavily from the fright she received just moments ago. Momby grinned happily and clapped her hands.
“Did you come for bread today, missy?” Momby asked, her brow creasing in concern. Luz nodded and held her hand out. Momby opened her palm and Luz dropped three silver coins into her hand.
“My father wants one of your freshest batches” Luz said in a refined tone. Momby held her finger up and disappeared into the stall. Luz waited patiently until Momby returned holding three loaves of bread in a small basket.
“Tell your father that this is what I owe him since he let me borrow his carriage the other day” she said, winking at Luz. Luz nodded her head and waved goodbye to the baker. Momby waved and smiled back at her. Luz turned left and walked down the way to the next stall. As she arrived there, she noticed that there was a line forming in front of the stall.
“Why should there be a line for apples?” she asked herself. She placed the basket of bread down and peeked her head into the line to see what was going on. She saw an elderly man grinning widely at the crowd.
“Now this here is true gold, my friends! Gather ‘round and see the greatest wonder that has ever been discovered by Prince Galldan of the Seven Seas.” The elderly man held the medallion up into the air for everyone to see. The people gasped and nodded their heads.
“How much is it sellin’ for, old man?” a man in the crowd asked, grinning widely. The elderly man shook his head violently and held his finger in the air.
“This isn’t for sale. It is a token of gratitude from Prince Galldan, and he wished for me to look after it while he ventured on his voyages. Besides, it’s too dangerous to fall into the hands of mere townsfolk” the elderly man was stopped by a loud rumbling. Luz swung around and gasped. Everyone in the market gasped and looked at the sky as they saw a pair of wings cutting through the clouds.
“Head for cover, it’s the Great and Dreadful Maugmet!”
