Demons of the midnight black

Walk behind you, at your back

If you wander streets at night

Beware of places void of light

.

Cold hands on your shoulders

Footsteps echoing your own

Icy breath upon your cheek.

You realise you’re not alone.

.

Confidence is shattered

Shivers rack your spine

The dark, suddenly oppressing

The light, impossible to find

.

Your breath begins to come so fast

Cold sweat upon your brow

You wrap your arms around yourself

Your beating heart too loud

.

Pretend that there is nothing wrong

Never look behind you

Continue at a steady pace

If you run then they will find you

.

The last moments of your life are here

Tell me, how does it feel?

You never thought it’d end like this

Somehow it seems unreal

.

On a split decision you decide

To look death in the face

Turning round, you swallow once

Your heart begins to race

.

The dim road lamp lights the path of

Dull grey concrete and litter

No one stands behind you, but

Fear makes your mouth taste bitter

.

Calming down, you wonder what

Made you think that way

Was it just your imagination?

Or because of your long day

.

But they shadows did seem awfully real

One glance did the trick

Out of the circle of lamplight

Where the shadows were so thick

.

A movement and a glinting of

A predators watchful eyes

Gulping once you turn and run

And hope you imagined the whispered “goodbye”

.

Demons of the midnight black

Walk behind you, at your back

If you wander streets at night

Beware of places void of light
