Sea

At registration I gave her

A glitter-sticker,

Covered in the princesses of disney.

I chose Ariel

Because I like the sea.

I didn’t say which type of sea,

Didn’t specify the water-waves

From the harvest-hands;

The blood from the body.

‘Cause it’s this magic corn-field,

Where white kisses blow and

The Sun pulls the tides,

That is my seashore - sweet

In the mouth of the countryside.

At the toes of the wheat-men

Lurking, reaching from the shingle

Are stinging creatures,

Burning my fingers, branding me

With holiday souvenirs and

In the palms of the trees

Fledglings bathe and sing to me

As cow bells echo across the hills

And clothe me in pollen-light,

Turning me golden.
