Once upon a time it’d been easy. Easy to laugh, easy to cry, easy to smile…easy to love.

The wall, that seeming boundary that existed like the great Berlin Wall in certain friendships, never was for them. There was only the secondary line that was invisible, yet known.

The words were so natural from their lips; the subtle touches merely them. It’d been more than enough to simply be, to stand side by side and reminisce teasingly of memories and wonderment.

Together they were the person the other knew—the private golden child and the congenial girl next door—regardless of outside perceptions. No forced smiles, no stiff touches and empty answers. They were themselves and that breath of fresh air caught attention.

Because, suddenly, the course changed and the river reversed its flow. Under one lampshade of judgement, they couldn’t stand in front of hundreds of eyes and not remind their audience of the "just friends" label.

Out of nowhere, it wasn’t his girlfriend he was keeping private; it was her, his best friend. Clouded smiles and abrupt one-eighties were spied on their streets, snapped and spread, but that twinkle, that seeming something was gone.

The wrong girl came into focus, the wrong void of presence, and those smiles vanished with her.

They were left to nothing, exchanging sighs of Iloveyou and whispered I’mmissyou over the phone.

And, as lost as he was to the world around him, he knew that—in some outlandish reality—he would always find his way back to her. He wouldn’t be lost.

The end.
