Chapter 62
A New Beginning

“Gee Evan, can you please focus?”

His pouting looked terribly out of character for him; she was too used to his moody, cranky self. It was kind of funny, though, “But do we really have to, now? We just got back from that damned break.”

She shook her head, “We have to; you know how this is. Besides, you agreed on the break as well.”

He folded his sturdy arms and shifted his weight onto the other side, “Well yeah, I mean, we weren’t ready. Right?”

She did love it when he sounded uncomfortable though; it was a welcome occurrence that was becoming more and more seldom as he assumed his powerful, confident Archangel persona, which she was quite attracted to as well if she could be honest.

He mumbled something she didn’t really catch. “Sorry, what?”

“Nothing,” he cleared his throat and the sudden redness of his neck made her eyes narrow to slits. “Stop giving me that look and focus.”

Oh, she hated it when he threw her words back at her. “Tell me what you were thinking or I’ll find out myself.”

“Hey!” He exclaimed, putting his hands up and moving back a step. “You shouldn’t be using a power that is only half yours so freely, or I’ll start playing the song again!”

“What do my powers have to do with anything?” She knew she shouldn’t have told him about her vision! It was enough with his teasing about her now being another nutty seer, and now this. Her hands went to her hips and she tapped her foot on the concrete floor, “Besides it’s half mine, so I can do with that half whatever I want to. She won’t mind, especially if it’s to bug you.”

He smartly ignored that and wondered, “Isn’t it time already?”

Her eyes rolled in their sockets and she begrudgingly faced the emerald green door. “I guess so.”

Next to her he sighed, “Do I really have to come?”

The way he asked made her lips twitch, “Not really, but you insisted.”

And besides, he was distracting her well.

He could groan all he wanted, but he had been the one to whisper how much he missed her to her ear when they were reunited; he had been the one to insist he’d tag along, so he could start spending some time with her as soon as heavenly possible. She had been the one to agree; after all, separating throughout the mating season hadn’t sat well with her either, needed as it had been.

In the end, they were far from ready to start their own family. There were a lot of issues to solve without involving work in the picture.

“Fine, whatever,” he sounded like the fate soon to be fulfilled was his, and he was now resigned. “Lets get this done and over with, I want to go back to take a nap.”

She wanted to ask if she was invited; instead she halted the amiable chit chatter by concentrating on doing the horrible, but necessary task at hand. Idly she wondered if she was meant to reap all the humans she knew.

Should she warn Jack? Lilith? Ana? Fat chance with the last two.

With a deep breath she pushed through the door and into the small living room. She decided not looking at the photographs would make things a little bit easier.

She wasn’t right; it was hard all the same, and it got almost unbearable as she climbed up the stairs with Evan in tow.

“Evan, this doesn’t mean I’m killing her, does it?”

“Don’t be stupid,” he whispered back; the insult sounded somewhat tender to her ears. “You saw why this needs to happen; you shouldn’t be worrying over it.”

Maybe it was true. She couldn’t help but wonder if this was how Celles felt when she predicted either her sister’s or Uriel’s death. It was inevitable, crucial... the closing circle of one spin of life.

And the beginning of a new one, in this case.

That last thought gave her enough energy to reach the main room of the house. She foolishly placed her hand on the knob, to twist it, but it went through the metal and onto the other side.

Slightly ashamed she looked back to Evan, waiting for him to mock her for her human mistake. What she found instead was a small, sad smile.

“You look pathetic,” he said.

Her lips twitched again, “Can you tell?”

She felt his hand squeeze her shoulder and push her ahead softly. With a shaky breath she approached the bed, where she could see a mostly brown, greying tuft of head peak from under the bed sheets, along with longer, also greying curls on the other side.

This was it.

Her feet treaded over the carpeted floor, with more apprehension than she probably would have felt had anyone told her that once she climbed onto that truck she would not come back home. It was cruel that she saw she was the one meant to pick Lorellin’s soul up, but she was now a Scriptor... she could not defy herself.

Gently she placed her hand on her sister’s forehead; it was the only part of her she could make out.

She reached into her mind to ease her out. Before she would have had no idea this was how a natural death occurred; a Viator angel visits the human and, depending on what the orders are, takes him or her to either the Void, or a Transitus ceremony.

In Lorellin’s case, a Transitus awaited. And Narya already knew it was going to be successful.

“Lorellin?” Her voice was as soft as the caress of her fingers against her twin’s wrinkled forehead. Then a glow started to appear between their skins; she couldn’t define the colour at first, but as it increased she noted it was... peach.

Amber eyes opened and gazed into hers. Narya let her hand drag down the length of her sister’s body until she found her hand and pulled.

“Come with me, Lorellin. It is time.”

It was surprisingly easy to take her soul out of her body; it was surprisingly hard to keep from crying as she did so.

Her older sister smiled, though, and spoke words that impacted her enough so that she never would forget them, “Don’t fret, Narya. I knew this was going to happen today.”

Her jaw dropped, and behind her Evan muttered something that sounded suspiciously like, “Two of a kind!”

Narya sighed and spared a glance at the top of Robert’s head. She felt pity for him; when he woke up his wife would be gone, taken by her long since dead younger sister. But he would not know that; instead he would cry and mourn and miss. He would be fetched at a later time as it happened to all those that were left behind, like Evan had back then, before it all started.

She turned around and guided her sister back to the door; another hand sneaked to her free one, and she turned to see Evan looking away as though he hadn’t a care in the world. But she knew he was offering his support that way, hiding his face and his true emotions at the same time, and for that she was glad.

With a smile she pulled her two most beloved people through the door, to their new lives.

AG’s final words: Wow, that sounds serious... So, it’s been quite the epic ride, hasn’t it? But all things come to an end, sadly. I finished this story in August, that’s the only reason why I’m not feeling worse about seeing it go. The good news is that this story continues. Yes, you read right. The next story of this universe will be called Earthbound, and it’s already being written by Kanilla, stay tuned for it! I know I’m super excited about it. After that story is done the final instalment of the series will be Endbound, which is going to be written by me. But lets focus on Earthbound first, kay?

Questions about the story? Don’t worry, they will be answered. (We are that genius.)

Super ultra thanks to Kanilla, who had her last piece of fanservice for a while. That One Dork Stacey, who wished this story really never ended (my, what a pun). 53BookTitles, who thought the sexual tension was hilarious. FireRam, who thought the mating season was the perfect touch, and liked that I took them back to the starting point for the new beginning (ya don’t say?). Chaos Iceaurora, who holds me completely responsible for my characters growing on her (sorry?) and who loved the Narya-in-heat part. Last but not least, to timayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy (I hope I counted those right), whose thanks are multiplied by forty nine.

Thank you all! Till the next one.
