Chapter 1

Mondays were never good days in Lindsay’s book. They were always the day her parents scheduled her dentist and doctor appointments for. When she was younger they were the day she had to stop having fun and go back to school then go to piano lessons. In middle school, Mondays were the days her parents sent her to therapy to help ‘fix’ her problem.

Lindsay had always been extremely antisocial. She spoke much less then normal kids, in her early years, and as she got older she only got quieter. By the time she got to high school, Lindsay was any adult’s nightmare. A teenager who wouldn’t answer them and if, by chance she did answer, it was with her I-don’t-care-that-you-exist-get-out-of-my-face attitude.

No, Lindsay hated Mondays for another reason, her senior year of high school. Mondays were the days that she had to start the day in Mr. Clemens’ class.

Lindsay dropped into hard, blue plastic chair at the back of the English classroom, her backpack hanging off one shoulder and her arms folded across the front of her black tank top, her short light pink hair shooting out in every direction.

Fifteen minutes later Lindsay let out a loud sigh and stood from her chair. If Mr. Clemens wasn’t going to get to class on time then she wasn’t going to sit around waiting for him. She started toward the closed classroom door, looking around a little.

A new kid sat in the opposite corner from where Lindsay had been sitting, a black ski cap pulled over his head, hiding his hair. The fact that he was still wearing his hat in this class made it obvious that he was new. Mr. Clemens forbid his students to where hats in his class. He had a collection of them in a closet somewhere, Lindsay was sure of it. The new kid was now watching her curiously, probably wondering what she was doing.

The lard clock sat on the wall, ticking away the moments till class was over.

The new kid was the only student that noticed Lindsay was out of her seat. Everyone else was too preoccupied with their conversations about their weekends to notice anything that was going on around them.

‘Someone could walk in here with a gun and nobody would falter in his or her stream of sentences’ Lindsay thought as she reached the door and folded her hand around the doorknob.

Lindsay was about to turn the doorknob when someone on the other side of the door pulled it out of her hand. Lindsay’s emerald eyes glanced up through her dark eyelashes to find a fuming Mr. Clemens standing in front of her, a cart of books behind him.

“Back to your seat Miss Branch,” Mr. Clemens spoke in a clipped, slightly nasally, disinterested voice.

Lindsay turned, not bothering to protest this time, and sulked back to her seat. The class, which had gone quiet when the door opened, started to snicker as she passed them on her way to the back of the class.

“Now class, take out your Lord of The Flies books, and turn to chapter two,” Mr. Clemens instructed as Lindsay dropped back down into her chair.

The new boy’s hand went up in the air, where it stayed as he waited to be noticed.

“Yes Mr. Sanders?” Mr. Clemens sounded irritated as he addressed the new boy.

“I need a book,” the new boy replied, his hand dropping back down onto his desk.

“I don’t have anymore, move over by Miss. Branch, share her book,” Mr. Clemens ordered, sending a glare in Lindsay’s direction. Lindsay rolled her eyes, sometimes she found the English teacher amusing when he tried to make her afraid of him.

Lindsay glanced over towards the new boy who was just standing up from his chair and starting in her direction.

“I’m Lindsay,” Lindsay introduced herself as the new boy dropped down into the empty chair next to her. The boy opened his mouth to answer, but the flamboyant blond on his other side spoke before he could.

“He doesn’t care,” the blond sneered before pasting a fake friendly mask on her face as she turned to the new kid. “I’m Alison,” She said in an overly perky voice. The new kid looked at her for a second before turning back to Lindsay.

“I’m Kyle,” he said in a slightly breathy tenor voice. Lindsay smiled warmly at him.

“Nice to meet you Kyle,” Alison chirped over his shoulder like he’d been talking to her the whole time.

“Okay,” Kyle said before glancing down at the book in Lindsay’s hand.

“Mr. Sanders,” Mr. Clemens addressed from where he was now standing, directly in front of Kyle’s desk. Lindsay and Kyle both turned toward him. “No hats in class,” Mr. Clemens almost yelled as he ripped the black ski cap off his head. Kyle snatched at the hat but he couldn’t get a hold of it.

The class went suddenly silent, staring at Kyle. Mr. Clemens stood wide-eyed, probably regretting taking the hat away.

Kyle’s hazel eyes were turned down toward his desk. His cheeks covered with the slightest shade of pink.

Alison now sat as far away from Kyle as her desk would allow. A slightly repulsed look sat on her face, like she had never seen a bald teenager before. It wasn’t even like Kyle had an ugly head. His head was smooth and scar less.

Kyle glanced over at Lindsay to find her in the same spot she had been, a slightly sympathetic look in her eyes, but other then that she hadn’t changed.

“Well,” Mr. Clemens coughed, turning and starting back towards the front of the class. “Get into groups and discuss the book so far.”

A loud murmur could be heard through out the class, and Lindsay was sure the conversations had nothing to do about the book.

Lindsay turned toward Kyle. “So,” she began, “basically what’s happened in the book so far is there is a bunch of kids stuck on an island and they choose Ralph as their leader, and go to make a fire on top of the mountain where it burns down the forest.”

“I know,” Kyle said, an amused smile on his lips.

“You’ve read the book?” Lindsay inquired, tilting her head to the side a little.

“Yeah, in the hospital,” Kyle explained.

“Hospital?” Lindsay sat with confusion written all over her face.

“Yeah, I’d been going through chemo for the last six months,” Kyle said, tapping his head with his index finger.

“Oh,” Lindsay said.

“Yeah, the hospital didn’t have a very good book selection. Pretty much it was either Lord of The Flies or The Anatomy of the Human Body,” Kyle clarified. Lindsay smiled at him.

“Yeah, I guess I can see why you chose Lord of the Flies,” Lindsay nodded, glancing up at Mr. Clemens, who was flipping through the pages of some random book. Probably the dictionary.

So this was just an idea I had the other weekend and hadn't gotten around to starting. Review and tell me if you like it!! I'm not sure where it's going yet, but if you have any ideas please let me know. :)
