Chapter 02
She’s not like them
Kay got up and swung her book bag over her shoulder as the bell for lunch rang. She waited by the bathroom door for a moment until the heard students walking by, talking on their way to their lockers and the lunch room.
She waited a moment before slipping out of the bathroom and into the crowds of students. As usual, she went unnoticed.
Kay may have been a bit of a weird girl now, but she was still easily over looked or forgotten. When people said that they were about as noticeable as a wall flower they were usually using it as a figure of speech. When Kay said it, people thought of it as a figure of speech too, but for her it was for real. Unless she smacked into someone they wouldn’t even notice here. In this case, it worked well to her advantage.
A small smirk crossed her features as she put her things in her locker and headed to the lunch room. She slipped into the loud lunch room filled with students, some laughing, talking, yelling, and whispering. Different groups sat in different places there weren’t very many that sat completely alone. Most of the students belonged in a group, weather they were popular, nerds, or somewhere in between.
She walked through the room heading to get her lunch. Her eyes ran over each person, each group. She listened to some of the words spoken, secrets that were shared. None of it meant much to her. The only thing that kept her watching, listening to them was her desire to understand. She wanted to learn more about the human mind, and this was simply the best way.
In her eyes and mind listening and watching was the best way for her to learn and understand. Sometimes this would just leave her with clues to something bigger and that’s why she continued to listen. All of the conversations and all of the different topics kept her listening. Pe4ople were so different yet they were too much alike for her taste.
She scuffed and got her food blocking out the noise for the time being. She felt that if she listened to their foolish conversations forever that she would become as stupid as many of them were. That’s what she believed.
It was true she was smarter then most children her age, no, not in her grades, but in her thought process. She had a unique thought process compared to most. One example of her thought process was the fact that she could understand something even if she’d never gone through it before. Many people could say they understood and believe they did but until it actually happened to them they could not truly understand. She could. She wasn’t sure how, but she understood. She could imagine it, feel it, remember it, and understand it.
Another example was the fact that she understood how the real world worked. She was only a teenager, but she understood. Yes, most teens understand that you have to get a job, pay for your car and gas. They understand that their parents aren’t going to buy things for them anymore but the real world is much deeper then that and Kay saw it.
Teenagers drive drunk, so do many adults. Kay saw what it did and understood. She didn’t need to be in an accident to fully understand what had happened. Someone died, yes, but the person who was drunk lived. They would live and know forever that they killed someone because they had driven while drunk. That’s how she saw it. She could see the full picture of things while many couldn’t, especially if it hadn’t yet happened to them.
Kay took her food, paid, and went over to the corner of the room and sat down at an end seat at a table. No one was around here because of the door. It created a draft, but she didn’t mind. She thanked the drafty door for what it did though. It kept the other students away and she liked that. She enjoyed being alone.
Smiling she opened her bag of chips and popped one in her mouth before putting on her head phones. She couldn’t go anywhere without her personal CD player. While most people liked iPods or MP3’s Kay’s music player of choice was her personal CD player. She didn’t have the patience to sit around and wait for the music to upload onto the MP3 or iPod. She’d get frustrated and give up.
Kay relaxed as she listened to the music blaring in her ears. Her eyes ran over all the students who now seemed so far away. Her thoughts were elsewhere now though. Her thoughts of all the students and their minds had taken her to a world within her own. She didn’t hear the music in her ears or the girl standing next to her trying to get her attention.
The girl finally waved her hand in front of Kay’s face. She blinked and removed the head phones before looking up at the girl and her three friends with a lazy expression.
“Do you need something?” she asked lazily.
“Yeah, that’s my seat.” The girl said her arms crossed.
Kay looked the girl over. She was a tall black haired girl with brown eyes that she tried to make look intimidating, but it didn’t work well.
“Nice skirt,” she commented as he eyes fell upon the incredibly short skirt the girl wore.
“What are you a lesbian?” she asked giving Kay a snotty, disgusted look.
“A lesbian no, bi yes, and no, you’re not my type.” She said holding back a laugh. She had to admit, this girl was the most fun she’d had in a while.
The girl gasped and looked glared down at Kay.
“Okay, so are we done? I’d like to go back to my music before the CD is over.” Kay spoke getting bored already.
“Yeah, we’re done as soon as you get up.” The girl snapped.
“You know, that didn’t quite make sense. I think you meant to say something like, ‘No, We’ll be done as soon as you get up.’.” Kay corrected.
“Don’t be a smart ass, new girl.” She growled angrily. She was getting annoyed with the defiant brown haired girl that sat in ‘her seat’.
Kay laughed at the nickname.
“Girley, I’ve been around this school longer then you have. I just went a-wall for a while.” She explained amused again. She hadn’t noticed the bit of attention their little argument was getting them.
The girl looked pissed now which was no surprise. Kay had that effect on people. Well, she either pissed them off or annoyed them. She of course just found it all amusing.
“Look, get up. That’s my seat.” She snapped angrily.
Kay looked around with interest before looking to the girl.
“You’re name isn’t on it, unless, of course, I’m blind which I highly doubt. So, according to property laws unless you have a contract or something in writing that says this seat it yours, you have no proof, thus, I do not have to get up.” She said simply before going to put her head phones back on.
The girl clenched her fists before grabbed the head phones and yanking them out of Kay’s hands. The CD player and head phones fell to the floor.
Kay’s left eyes twitched in irritation but she stood up and went to pick her CD player up from the floor before it got broken. The girl instantly sat down in what used to be Kay’s seat. Her friends all sat down around her.
Kay paid them little mind though as she walked back over, grabbed the girls arm with her free hand and forcefully yanked the girl out of the chair and onto the floor. She didn’t even give the girl a glance as she let go of her arm and sat down.
The girl’s eyes filled with furry as she stood up and went to speak but Kay was done playing. She looked to the girl, her once lazy eyes now cold and threatening.
“We’re done. One more word and I will file a law suit for harassment and destruction of property.” She threatened coldly. The girl blinked shocked. She hadn’t expected to hear the words law suit. What teenager had to worry about such things?
The girl regained her posture and glared before going to sit somewhere else. Kay may not have liked her, but the girl obviously wasn’t a fool. Kay had to give the girl credit for at least that little bit, if nothing else.
Kay put her ear phones back over her ears and turned the music back on before looking over the player to make sure it was still in perfect condition. She smiled slightly at the lack of scratches before going to eat her lunch again.
Okay, so I've decided that all the chapters in this story will be relatively short. I've been having a hard time making them longer. So for now they're gonna stay short.
Anyways, do hope you liked the chapter. :) We learned more about the curious character, Kay. She's interesting to write. She takes too much research though.
But! Still, review please!
