Last Walk Home
by: FIREBRAVE
The day was warm, and the sky was a clear shade of blue. Angela, a ten year-old girl lost in the troubles of life, walked onto her front porch. She was home alone, again. Her mother worked all day, having to leave in the earliest hours of morning and not arriving home until late at night. Her dad had died from cancer when she was only two months old. She had lost almost all hope of succeeding in life, but she still worked hard in order to please her mother.
Angela didn’t know where she was going but let her own feet carry her wherever they wished. Lost in her thoughts, she found herself wandering down the sidewalk to the end of her neighborhood. Angela looked down at her watch. The time was now 4:52 P.M., about ten minutes after she had left her house. Her mother was usually supposed to get off work at 10:00 P.M., but she put in a lot of overtime and took a long time to get home. Angela did not know why, and when she tried to talk to her mother about it, her mother would just tell her she would find out when she was older.
Angela made a left and continued to walk down the main road. She let her curly brown hair float in the breeze of the cars rushing by. Then, she wandered off back into her thoughts until something on the other side of the road caught her attention. The object appeared to be a black trash bag but not exactly. Angela knew there was surely something special about it. Angela looked both ways before crossing the street, one of the few things her mother had taken time to teach her. She approached the bag with caution, still unsure of the sensation she had felt when she had first seen it. She heard a strange beeping noise coming from the bag. Angela thought for sure it must be a toy. As she bent down to open the bag, the thing inside began to beep faster and faster until … BOOM – her whole world exploded into color.
The hospital was in a rush with patients being taken to and fro, both patients from the explosion and those there for other reasons. Angela’s mother, Kathy, sat beside her daughter as she watched Angela’s chest go up and down in a steady rythmatic pattern. It had been a full week, and her precious baby had still not woken. Angela’s mother had taken off work for a week to spend time with her child, and she was sure she had been fired for taking off too much time.
Kathy slowly reached over to touch Angela’s head when the heart monitor began to beep rapidly. The room began to flood with doctors and nurses, and Kathy was pushed back. Frantically, she went from person to person asking what was going on and if Angela was going to be OK. After a few minutes, the doctors and nurses filed out of the room. Kathy caught the attention of one, and just as she was about to ask about Angela, she glanced over at the heart monitor. A tear began to roll down her cheek, and the nurse turned off the light.
