True Angel

Chapter 1

Moonlight

The sky was as dark as the ravens wing, the only light was from the misty moon, hanging overhead, bathing the sleeping city in light. The city was silent and no-one was stirring. Almost no-one.

The great mysterious moon shone down through the open window of the apartment and was reflected in the enormous blue eyes of the girl stood there. She was smiling up at the beautiful starry sky, her lilac and blue tinted silver hair bristled in the light wind blowing in her face.

"Moonlight." she whispered, laying her hands on the window ledge. "Hey, guys..."

She turned and looked inside the apartment, but she had forgotten for a moment, trapped in the beauty of the night sky, that she was on her own, as she was every night. She sighed, more out of loneliness than anything. She didn't live alone; in fact, she lived with the rest of her team. They just went out every night, locked every door and windows and told her not to go anywhere. They'd missed this window tonight, and for once, she would actually be able to look at the stars.

The light from the moon felt so good and soft on her fair skin. It almost made her want to...

No. No she mustn't. Colin had told her explicitly not to do it.

But the moon was calling her, so soft and inviting. She felt a twinge on her right arm. She glanced down at her forearm. The outline of a feather glowed golden there. Her desire grew greater and greater.

Finally she couldn't stand any longer. She hadn't seen them yet. She had to know if they were ok.

Light as a feather, she leapt up onto the window ledge. The wind blew a little more impatiently. Her long silvery hair blew all around her, the fine silken strands stroking face, imploring her to just jump. She closed her blue eyes and let go of everything keeping her human. All thought and feeling just melted away, leaving her feeling so happy and so full of bliss, it made her feel so content. She stood up a little straighter, and leaned out into the wind.

Suddenly, two large white wings burst from her back. She turned and smiled at them.

"Hey, lilac tints. That's new." she said with a laugh.

She bent her knees a little and leapt off the ledge. She pushed down hard with her wings and rose up into the sky.

She let out a whoop as the cold night wind hit her in the face, and skimmed over her wings. Her long silvery hair flew back out of her face as she soared through the sky. Over fifty years she'd been waiting for this. Fifty years. And there was one place she wanted to revisit now she was back on Earth.

She flew for roughly ten minutes, passing over forests, rivers, cities, villages and hill upon hill, until eventually, she reached the coast. She landed lightly on the slope leading up to the edge of a cliff. She walked quickly up the slope, her bare feet barely touching the stone path. She felt her stomach tighten as she reached the edge.

As she emerged onto the edge of the cliff, she felt the sea air whistling through her hair, just as it had done almost a hundred years ago. She crept to the edge, feeling almost as she did a hundred years ago, when she'd flung herself off these cliffs and down into the writhing waves below her.

"Are you here?" she called into the night. "Where are you Thomas? I came back to look for you!"

The waves crashed against the rocks, almost as though they were answering her cry. But it wasn't really. She knew it wasn't really. She sat down on the edge of the cliff and cried, her wings wilting miserably.

She'd been searching for him for a hundred years. He hadn't been in the spirit world, but she knew he wasn't still alive. He was dead before she was. So then where was he?

"You'd come here if you were going to come looking for me, I know you would." she whispered. "I feel so alone here without you. You were my best friend. I love you Thomas, didn't you love me?" Suddenly, the thrashing waves became calm. "Even the waves feel my pain." she murmured. "Why can't you?" She looked up at the huge misty moon just above her head. "Maybe, if I'm really quiet, and listen really hard, I'll hear you calling me, and maybe I'll find you!"

She sat very still and very quiet, closing her eyes, listening hard. She heard nothing but the gentle waves lapping against the rocks though. She sat up a little straighter, screwing up her pretty face in concentration. She could almost hear...

"Lavender!"

Her eyes snapped open. Someone was calling her. It might be him. She leapt to her feet and looked around excitedly.

But there was no man, spirit or human. A tall girl with long dark brown hair, and white wings was fluttering down towards her.

"Thank goodness I found you!" she cried rushing forward and throwing her arms around Lavender. "We got back to the apartment and you were gone."

"How did you know I was here?" asked Lavender as the girl released her.

"Call it maternal instinct." shrugged the girl, touching her forearm, where Lavender knew was a feather mark just like hers. "Everyone's out looking for you, even Kaitlin."

"Kaitlin's out as well?" groaned Lavender. She was going to be in so much trouble now. "Jennie, is she on her own?"

"No, Cleo's staying with her, as she always does. But Kaitlin is transformed, so she'll be spending tomorrow in bed. And the heralds are out looking for you as well. They are going to be so ticked off with you."

"And what about Renata?"

"She hasn't said anything, but she never does anyway. Now come on, we've got to get you home."

"Home is only a ten minute flight from here, we can stay here for a bit longer can't we?"

"Have you actually looked at the sky?"

"Yeah, Jennie, beautiful isn't it."

"That's not what I meant. Look!"

Jennie pointed up at the sky. Lavender turned and looked. The moon was slowly dipping below the horizon.

"Yeah, so?"

"Your wings only come out in two circumstances. One, if your element is around, I mean, your element is moonlight isn't it. Still don't know how that can be classed as an element. And two, if you're trying to protect someone or something. That's why we've never let you fly or fight during the day. You're not strong if there's no moonlight. When the moon goes down, you lose your wings until the next time you transform."

Lavender paled. "Jeez, that's the last thing I want when I'm so far from home." She turned and looked again at the moon setting, casting long silver streaks on the shining surface of the water.

"Lavender!"

"Ok, ok I'm coming." said Lavender as Jennie took a few running steps and leapt up into the sky. Lavender turned and looked back out over the water. "I'll be back, Thomas. Please be here next time."

Lavender and Jennie landed lightly on the window ledge, just as the moon was about to dip below the horizon. Jennie's wings vanished as she moved into the apartment, but Lavender just stood for a moment, blinking at her wings. Just as she reached out to touch the beautiful white feathers of her wings, the moon disappeared, and her wings went with it.

She sighed and hopped down off the window ledge, and found herself face to face with a tall black haired girl.

"Where the hell have you been!" she yelled, grabbing Lavender's shoulders and shaking her. "We've been worried sick!"

Lavender looked up into her face. Her big brown eyes, though full of anger, also were full of concern, and brimming with tears.

"I'm sorry." she said quietly. "I... I just..."

"I don't care what you were doing! You've had us all out. The guys as well. What if one of us had been caught by a demon?"

Lavender looked around at the team, composed of five angels, and three heralds including herself.

The angel holding her shoulders was Cleo. She had very long black hair and enormous brown eyes and she never took off the arm-warmers on her wrists which reached right up to her elbows. Everyone knew that she only wore them to hide the feather mark on her forearm. She was the youngest of the team, but she died a bit older than Lavender, so she, Lavender, was viewed as the baby of the group, much to her dislike. Jennie had moved away, to the fridge, and had begun rifling through it, looking for food. She called over, asking what anyone wanted. Jennie was an excellent cook, and was the closest any of the team had to a mother. She flicked her long dark brown hair out of her face and looked around, her big teal coloured eyes sparkling, as though she was trying to hold back tears too. Colin was the first to answer her. He quickly got up and went to help her out. Colin was easily the best looking of the three heralds, and probably the nicest of them too. Tristan and Phillip were nice, and relatively good looking, but everyone said Colin was different. He had longish white hair which hung right in his face, big blue eyes and his skin was pale, so eerily pale. Phillip had wild black hair and incredibly bright blue eyes and was known as the joker of the three. Tristan was the strong and silent type, certainly, he didn't say much. His hair was an auburn sort of colour and he had brilliant green eyes which could pierce you if you looked too hard into them. Then, curled up on the sofa was Kaitlin. Kaitlin was definitely the most angelic of the girls, and the one that they all wanted to protect the most. She was nowhere near as strong as the rest of them, and although she could transform into an angel, it often left her weak and powerless for a while. No-one was completely sure of her special power or of her element. All of them had one. She had long, golden hair and enormous blue eyes, and was rarely without a smile. This was just as well, since she was best friends with Cleo, who never smiled, so Kaitlin smiled plenty for both of them. The last member of the team was an angel, whom none of them knew much about. She would often slink around in the shadows, not communicating and rarely venturing out of the apartment. Her name was Renata. She was the eldest of the angels and she never spoke. All of them agreed that Renata knew something they didn't, but none of them were completely sure what. Renata could've passed as a ghost. She was tall and thin, had long white hair and enormous silver eyes.

Lavender could see Renata sitting in the shadows, staring at her with those eerie silver eyes. Not saying a word, just staring. She looked so disappointed, that Lavender felt as though she'd let them all down so badly, and knew she couldn't bear the thought of if one of them had been caught by a demon. She sniffed and wiped away the tears hurriedly.

Cleo sighed. "Well, I suppose you'd best get a few hours sleep. You've got a busy day ahead."

Lavender yawned. "But I'm not the least bit tired, Cleo. Let me stay up, just for a little longer."

"No!" said Jennie, in a commanding voice, standing up after deciding there was nothing good in the fridge. "I'd better go shopping tomorrow. Without you, Lavender, the mission tomorrow is damn near impossible."

"Colin!" said Lavender in the sort of voice a child uses when turning to another parent. Everyone knew that Colin had some sense of influence over Cleo. Colin smiled and shook his head at her.

"Sorry Lavender, but Jennie and Cleo are right. You're one of the most important people on this mission, so you have to be ready for tomorrow."

Lavender scowled at them all and stomped off to her room, muttering something about 'rotten evil angels, stupid heralds, think they can boss me around I'm not even the youngest.'

"In fact, I think we should all get some rest." said Colin smiling around at everyone. Everyone hit the hay for the night, or what's left of it. Cleo can I talk to you?"

"Sure." shrugged Cleo.

There was much scuffling and muttering and members of the team saying goodnight to one another. When they were all gone, Colin glanced at Kaitlin, still curled up on the sofa.

"Should we worry about her?"

"No, once she's asleep, nothing can wake her up. Particularly just after she's transformed."

Colin took a deep breath, his smile vanishing. "Ok, Cleo, we need to talk about this. Why does Holly want Lavender to do this?"

"She was fifteen when she died." sighed Cleo, falling back, exhausted onto a sofa. "She'll be fifteen now... the "True Angel"... It just works out easier. It means me or Jennie don't have to change our appearances."

Colin sighed and flopped down beside Cleo. "Something's telling me she'll muck it up Cleo. I hate not having faith in her, but just think about it. Can you honestly name any time when she hasn't mucked up?"

Cleo looked thoughtful, tugging at the gloves hiding her mark. Then she sighed. "You're right. Colin, something's bound to go wrong. We should've found someone else."

"She is an 'Angel Child'." said a soft voice from the other side of the room. Colin and Cleo turned and looked at Kaitlin, who had wearily raised her head and was blinking at them, apparently trying to remember where she was. She quickly cottoned on as to where she was however. "You've never given her a real chance. Tonight was the first time she's ever flown, and you two acted like it was totally criminal. Lavender is a sweet girl, and I have faith in her, even if you two don't."

Colin and Cleo looked at one another. Finally, Colin sighed.

"Alright. She'll go on the mission tomorrow, I'll be her backup if something goes wrong."

"Nothing will go wrong Colin." said Kaitlin softly. "Just have faith in her for once."

"But Kaitlin, I'm not sure you understand her importance." said Colin turning to look at her, one hand shooting up to his arm. "If she doesn't find the girl, then we are pretty much sunk. The fate of Heaven and Earth, to some extent, rests with Lavender, and, in the end, on this poor girl she has to find."
