Four-Teen: Too Young

Chapter Twelve: I’m Sorry

Normal POV

After dinner, Chris, Sangoya, and Candie piled in the car and Chris drove them all over to Candie’s house. Chase decided that he was going to stay home and that he wasn’t changing his mind. When they got to the house, they all got out and walked up the long stairs to the house.

They lived on a street with big mansions, mostly owned by doctors. Darell had the house build around the time him and Star had got married, him and Star picked out piece by piece that they wanted for each room.

Candie unlocked the door and walked in, followed by Chris and Sangoya.

“I’m home! Aunt Sang and Uncle Chris came to visit!” shouted Candie.

Dav walked into the hallway by the front door. “Unc, Aunt Sang, what are you guys doing here?”

“I don’t get a hug? Such a rude little boy.” said Sangoya.

Dav laughed and went over and hugged Sangoya, and she hugged him back.

“Where’s your dad?” asked Chris.

“Him and Sparkie are upstairs. Apparently, they didn’t like the secretary I choose. They said she had too much oomph.” he let go of Sangoya and she let go of him too and laugh.

“That’s what you get for thinking with that,” she pointed to his jeans, “instead of that.” she moved her index finger to his brain.

Dav made a face at her. Chris took it upon himself to head up the stairs to Darell’s office. Along the way, he saw wedding pictures, pictures of when the kids were born, including Chase. He got a sharp pain in his heart when he stopped to look at the picture of him holding Star in his arms and her holding onto his neck, both of them laughing. He had the same picture in his wallet. He had many pictures of him and Star, from when they were younger, up time around the time she died. They were always clowning around, Star, Darell, Sangoya, and him. That all stopped when they found out she had died.

He tried to control his emotions as he forced himself up the stairs. He walked through the halls, more pictures. He see why Chase didn’t want to come, he had more self-control than Chase, Chase would have broke down.

He stopped at Darell’s study and walked in.

“Chris?” Darell said, looking up from his work, his eyes softening a bit.

“Uncle Chris!” Sparkle hopped up from her spot on the ground and practically knocked him over as she jumped into his arms and embraced him into a big bear hug.

Chris laughed and hugged her back. “Man, you’re getting so big. I still thought you were down towards the ground.”

“Hey! I wouldn’t be that small!” squeaked Sparkle.

“Hey, with Star as your mom, anything is possible.”

They all laughed and Darell turned his attention to Star’s picture, there was a picture of Star in every room in the house.

Chris looked over at Darell, and with his hold still on Sparkle, he spoke, “How you holdin’ up?”

“I’m … okay…” he took his gaze off the picture and turned his attention to his brother-in-law. “How about you?”

“It was hard getting up those stairs, let me tell you. Then I had to face the hallway to this room, and…” he laughed. “I’ll be fine.”

“Sorry…” said Darell. “It’s just… I know it might be hard for the kids, but I don’t think I would be able to function right if her picture wasn’t in every nook and cranny of this house. I need to be able to see her, everyday.”

“I understand.” said Chris.

Sparkle was quiet, she didn’t realize how important having her mom’s picture up meant to him. Now she knows why he was quick to get mad when she was cleaning the hallway and forgot to put her mom’s picture back on the desk. He had been complaining that the hallway looked a mess the past week, but as soon as he walked in the door, the first thing he noticed wasn’t the clean hallway, but that Star’s picture was missing. Sparkle was so hurt, she ended up crying in her room that night. Candie had come in to comfort her though, and told her Darell was just in a depression state of mind and how he saw past anything and everything they could or would possibly do. Sparkle tried to register in her head what Candie had said to her, but she was so young, it was hard. The way she saw it was, she was fighting for attention against her mother’s ghost, and the ghost was winning by a lot.

Sparkle excused herself and left for her room so that her Uncle and Dad could do their catching up with each other. It’s been a while since they last seen each other.

“Look Dar, … I’m the one who should be sorry. I’m sorry I left you by yourself to rot. I should have been there for you.”

“You’ve known her all your life too Chris, she’s your sister, you don’t have to be sorry. I’m just your brother-in-law.”

“You’re a good one too. Star had a good husband. Thanks for taking care of her when she was alive.”

“I didn’t do too good a job, her douche bag boyfriend got her killed.”

“Don’t blame Cas, it’s not completely his fault, it was out of his hands.” said Chris, defending his cousin. He knew it wasn’t Cas’s fault, but when he had heard that Star was dead, and how she died, he wanted to take Cas and beat him unconscious, for not protecting her. Shortly after, he made himself realize that Cas loved Star and if he would have had the power to protect her, he would have.

“You will never get me to believe that, ever. If he loved her like he said he did, he wouldn’t have got her killed!” Darell pounded the desk with his fist. “I don’t care what anyone says! That bastard set her up, got her alone and…” Darell sighed, knowing that wasn’t the truth, just some story he told himself, hoping one day, maybe he would believe it, that day hadn’t come. As far as he knew, that day would never come. He knew Cas loved Star… and at the very back of his mind, he knew that Star loved Cas back. He didn’t care if she loved him or not, Star had married him and she meant the world to him.

Chris watched him as he went through his faze. Now he knew what Candie meant by his out lashes every now and then. “……Darell,” he was completely speechless.

He sighed, “Is Sangoya here too?”

“Yeah”

“Let’s go downstairs then,” said Darell as he walked out from behind his desk and headed out the room and proceeded downstairs. Chris looked over at the desk to see what he was working on and seen the title, “Dear Star,” and decided not to read it. Instead he walked out and followed Darell downstairs.
