I shouldn’t start another series when I have two going and can barely write that but… I’ve always wanted to do a story with a main character like this. I really wanted someone with an unusual personality that’s slightly unstable, but I could never get the story how I wanted. One time it was too dark, another it was too light… I like to keep my writing light-hearted but I think I finally got it this time!

I wanted to say this is an angst as a sub-category, but I’m not really happy with that since it’s pretty much limited to the main character; every one else is normal… kind of. I’m not sure how much I’ll update this one, though I’m sure if someone likes it I’ll keep it going! (Man, I’m really bad at thinking up titles…) For those who haven’t read my works before, it may also seem to have a parody feeling to it as well since I like to twist cliché scenes.

The Nameless Girl

Episode One – Nameless Girl

Humans… what makes them struggle so? Maybe I can’t understand it, despite having struggled so much myself. Maybe at heart I’m just a selfish person. My situation shouldn’t be so bad, considering how bad it could be and is for others, but still…I want to change; I should be able to change. In a way I did change, but I’m still me on the inside. I guess this is just the kind of person I am.

--

“Rin-chan, wake up! It’s time for your first day!” A female voice hummed through the darkness.

“Mom, I’ve asked you not to call me that. We aren’t even Asian, let alone Japanese…” This person before me is my mother. Like me she has dark, raven-black hair. Unlike me, who has shoulder-length, straight hair, hers is just naturally curly and short. I didn’t get her soft, brown eyes, however. Instead I have these cold, green ones. She’s a morning person while I’m… not. As for my name, Himiko Rin Luminaire, the first and middle ones are due to her. I don’t know how my father lost that battle, but my mother was something of an avid Japanese drama fan and speaks Japanese fluently. Thus I ended up with a name like this.

“It’s your first day back! You shouldn’t be so grumpy in the morning!” Her mother sang.

“You know how mornings are yet you do this?” She muttered softly. Rin slowly sat up in her bed, her disheveled hair tumbling about in front of her face. She sighed and brushed it out of the way.

“Now, now; you should be happy! It’s your first day back since you lost the weight! I’m sure everyone is looking forward to seeing the new you!”

Ha, no one is looking forward to that. “Can you go away now? I can’t take your enthusiasm in the morning.”

“Fine! Meanie!” She huffed and left the room.

If you look at us from the outside, judging us by our personalities, isn’t she more like a little sister than a mother? Rin sighed and threw her feet over the side of her bed. She slowly stood up, wobbling slightly as she started to move. So hard to get up… She paused at the small mirror on her closet door. The room itself was rather small and crowded with furniture. The door was on her left with the bed behind her. To her immediate right on the same wall as the closet was a small television stand with a decent size television and a DVD player. The wall to her right held a desk with a computer and a flat monitor for it. The closet held the mirror on its sliding doors.

This is what I look like now. She stared at the green-eyed girl in the mirror. She was on the taller side, nearing six feet, and her hair was scattered around her shoulders and face. She was wearing a simple white shirt and matching pants as pajamas. I look like a normal weight… I’m not used to seeing this girl in the mirror. She slid open the door and stared into the closet.

I had to buy a bunch of new clothes. She frowned slightly. That was a horrid experience. She grabbed a pair of short jeans and a light blue, plain t-shirt. She grabbed a small brush from the shelf and quickly fixed her hair to stay behind her before replacing the brush and closing the door. Still, no matter how my appearance changes, I’m still me on the inside… She sighed softly and walked out of the bedroom, through the small hallway and down the stairs. She curved right around the stairs until she entered the kitchen. The room was rather large, the second largest in the house. Rin sighed and sat down at the small, square table near the archway she had entered through. Her mother sat across from her.

“What’s with that grin?” Rin frowned and shrunk down in her chair under her mother’s intense smile.

“I’m just so happy! You look so good!”

“That’s great.” Rin slowly looked down at her food. “…You take this Japanese obsession even further by always feeding me rice.” She slid the bowl over and tossed the chopsticks at her mother.

“But it’s a great, light breakfast.” She whined.

“I’m going now.” Rin grabbed a blueberry muffin off the counter and walked out of the kitchen. I don’t get that woman at all. She moved through the hallway from the kitchen to the front door. She grabbed her small, brown backpack and slipped her feet into her white sneakers.

Here I go once more into that world. She opened the door and stepped outside. She slowly started walking down the small path from her house and onto the sidewalk along the street. Her home wasn’t too far from the school so it didn’t take her long to reach the building.

The school was a large, plain, two story building that Rin found rather ugly. The outside looked like some kind of white cement; the windows were rather large but only a separate, lower portion opened up by folding outwards. Rin stood at the pathway between the two cement pillars that started both ends of the gaudy wire fence that surrounded the schools borders. The area was already filled with the bulk of the student population. Rin slowly moved towards the glass doors as she glanced around.

She frowned slightly as a small gaggle of girls passed her. The trio was too involved with talking with each other to even notice her presence. As I thought; I’m still me. She scoffed and entered the building, unaware of the other people who would soon clash with her.

“Wait, who was that girl?” One of the male students stated as he watched Rin enter the building. He had short, blonde, and somewhat fluffy hair. He was on the tall side and strikingly handsome with cool, blue eyes. “I don’t remember that one… She seems somehow familiar.”

“So many girls you can’t even keep them straight anymore, eh James?” The other, shorter boy beside him asked. He was a drastic contrast to the young boy beside him. He had short, messy dark brown hair and matching eyes behind thick glasses.

“Quiet David.” He scoffed.

“She was rather cute though…”

“Oh? I didn’t think you could even tell.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” David frowned.

“I heard that a new student is transferring in and it’s a girl.”

“I’m the one who told you that…”

“I wonder if that’s her.”

“You aren’t even listening to me.” David sighed. This guy has the complete opposite personality of me. I wonder why he hangs out with me. Maybe it’s because I help him with his homework… “Ah, we’d better go. We’ll be late.”

“Fine, fine.” James sighed and walked towards the school doors. The area started to clear until no one was left as the time for classes to start approached.

“Ah, it’s my first day and I’m already late.” A new girl appeared at the gateway of the school. She sighed and glanced down at the small paper in her hands. “I’m so bad with directions.” The new arrival had shoulder-length, wavy, soft and very light brown hair. She had her dark blue eyes crinkled as she stared at the school.

“This is it for sure though! I hope the people here are nice!” She stated before darting towards the building. Just a few feet from the door she stumbled and tripped, falling flat on her face. “I’m okay!” She quickly pulled herself up and entered the building.

--

Rin frowned as she entered the classroom. Everyone’s already gathered with their cliques. She thought to herself as she noticed the same people talking to each other as she had at the end of the previous year. She moved silently to the back corner of the room, taking the empty seat next to the windows. She slowly pulled out her books and sat silently in her seat.

“So you must be the new girl.” James stated as he sat on the empty desk next to Rin’s. Rin seemed to ignore him, staring straight ahead. “Hello?” He leaned forward, placing his face near hers.

“Huh?” Her body flinched as she came back to reality. James. She thought to herself. Of course since I look like this now and am female he’d suddenly talk to me. He’s the stereotypical school flirt after all. Athletic, top of the school’s soccer team, and handsome. Most of the girls go crazy over this anime stereotype. Rin snickered inwardly at her comparison, while her outer expression remained unchanged.

“I said you must be the new girl.”

“Eh?” Rin’s eyes twitched.

“You’re the new girl, right? After all, I know every pretty face in this school!”

Snap. A sickening snapping sound echoed through Rin’s head.

“Um, is this the right classroom?” The clumsy girl walked into the room just as Rin’s blood pressure rose.

“Every pretty face?” She hissed. “You’re all alike!” Her raised voice got the attention of the class. “I’ve been in your class since kindergarten! You’ve barely noticed my existence and now you act like this?”

“Huh? Wait, I know you…”

“Oh, you finally realized it?” She scoffed. “You’re such a stupid idiot. I bet you don’t even know my name!”

“Name? It’s… uh…” He started panicking as he realized the entire class was staring at him.

“Don’t come near me again.” She pushed him off the desk. He gasped and stumbled back, barely landing on his back without injury.

“Well class,” A young woman walked in. “Hey, don’t sit on the floor.” She frowned at James. He gasped and quickly retreated to his seat. “Oh, you must be the new girl.” She glanced at the girl who was staring in shock at Rin. “I’m Mrs. Hanna.” The long, auburn-haired woman stated. She blinked her light green eyes, which sat behind thin, pink-framed glasses at the girl before her. “Why not introduce yourself?”

“Me? I’m uh, Amber…” She laughed nervously. “Nice to meet you!”

“This class is crowded so there’s only one seat.” Hanna pointed beside Rin.

“Okay.” I have to sit next to the girl? Amber gulped loudly. She slowly moved down the aisles and took her seat. Rin was sitting silently with her arms crossed as she glared outside.

I was already in a bad mood coming here today; I didn’t need to be reminded of my social status, or lack thereof.

“Um… hi…” Amber laughed nervously.

This place annoys me… I wonder if I could get home schooled or something. They’d probably never agree to it…

“Hello?” Amber leaned in.

“There are neighbors on the other side too.” Rin hissed. Amber yelped and jumped, causing the desk to hop a slight distance away from Rin.

This girl is kind of scary. Amber sighed softly. I can’t believe I have to sit next to her. Still… I can’t help but be curious…

--

Finally, lunch. Rin sighed as she moved down the school hallways until she reached a large breezeway-like area. The room had four main paths; one from the hallway she had come from, another, to the left of that hallway, lead to the doors to the auditorium where the bulk of the school ate lunch. A short distance beyond the lunch doors stood several glass doors which lead outside. A few yards across from those doors stood the large wooden ones which blocked the entrance to the school gym. In the center of the hall sat two, small benches, with their backs to each other, both of which were empty.

Despite the area being a central hub of several vital school areas, rarely anyone passed there during lunch. This is the reason Rin sat on the bench facing the auditorium and placed her bag beside her.

I used to come here because I had no where to sit, but now I love the peace. She sighed softly, reached into her bag and pulled out a small plastic container. “…rice? What’s wrong with that woman? Why is she always feeding me rice?” Rin growled and slammed the container on the bench. She frowned as she heard a small yelp of surprise.

“Um… could I sit here?” Amber asked nervously as she stood before Rin. “The lunch room is a little crowded and I haven’t gotten much time to get to know anyone else.” She blinked as Rin ignored her and pulled out a book from her pack. She started reading it without acknowledging her presence.

“Hello?” Amber blinked and leaned forward. Rin turned away from her without looking up. Amber sighed and sat down. She stared at the small container of rice. “Are those… chopsticks?” She turned her gaze to the small pieces of wood wrapped up in plastic.

Stupid mother. Just what is with her obsession? Rin didn’t show any outward sign of her thoughts and simply turned the page.

“My lunches aren’t much better.” Amber stated. “I just have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My parents never give me any money to buy lunches here…” She frowned as Rin turned the page again. What’s with this girl? She’s so pretty but she’s completely anti-social. I wanted to be nice since I’m sitting next to her, but who knew it’d be so hard? Still, I get this odd sense of loneliness from her…

“Hey, the new girl is sitting with the mysterious girl.” James stated as he stared at the bench from the auditorium doorway.

“You’re starting to look like a stalker. The new girl’s name is Amber so you could at least use that.” David stated from behind him, staring at his friend with a disgusted look.

“The new girl is pretty attractive…” He stated, obviously staring at her chest.

Actually, it shouldn’t be “why does he hang out with me?”, but why I hang out with him… “You’re staring at her chest from the shadows; do you really want to be known as a stalker?” David grumbled.

“A guy who has no interest in girls wouldn’t understand.”

“Just what are you implying?” David growled. “I like girls… It’s just none here have caught my attention.”

“More like none have shown any interest in you.” James scoffed.

“Hey!” David growled.

“Anyway, I must find out Mysterious Girl’s name… and why she was so rude to me!”

I really don’t know how this guy’s brain works. David sighed softly as James peeked out from the auditorium. “You should just leave that girl alone. She obviously doesn’t want to be bothered.”

“Ha! As a guy I can leave no girl alone! Besides, I’ve never had anyone talk to me like that… I must find out who she is! I will show her just what she’s missing out on.”

This guy… David sighed again. Is that his only motivation? Besides, what’s so special about her? You should just leave people like her alone…

--

Where did that guy go? David sighed as he started walking home. He usually walked home with James, who lived near his home, but had been unable to find him after school. I really don’t like walking home alone, especially lately. He adjusted his glasses slightly as they started sliding down his nose. I’ve heard that there have been a few rowdy delinquent students around lately. “Ha…” He laughed to himself. Like something like that would happen to me. What is this, a cliché anime?

“Hey!” David grunted as he crashed into a wall and stumbled backwards. “Why don’t you watch where you’re going?” David gulped and slowly looked up the ‘wall’. He was a good deal taller than the short boy, and had dirty, brown, tangled hair. He had a gruff face and glared down at him with dark eyes. He had two friends that stood on either side of him with matching qualities.

“Hey, I guess we found something we can play with after all.” The right grunt chuckled. “He’s even got glasses!”

“Uh…” David gulped loudly. What’s going on here? This kind of thing doesn’t happen in real life!

“Let’s see how much we can play with him before he breaks.” The main grunt laughed as he readied his fist.

This isn’t happening! Gangs of high school students don’t randomly attack people! What’s up with this situation? He closed his eyes as the fist came towards him. His entire body flinched as he heard the fist’s impacts. “Huh?” He opened his eyes to see a new hand in front of him.

“You really think you should be picking on the weak?” Rin growled as she held the fist in her right hand. First that pig irritates me, and then the new girl bugs me. She glanced down at David. I didn’t want to get involved, but this little runt can’t defend himself.

So… cool! He stared in awe at Rin as she turned her gaze back at the grunts.

“What do you think you’re doing?” The middle one growled.

“Don’t think we’ll go easy just because you’re a girl.” The left one stated.

“Now let go!” He pushed his fist against her hand. He blinked in surprise at the resistance. “Let go you bitch!”

“I was already feeling annoyed… but to allow punks to pick on the weak… and now that comment… I’m feeling especially mad!” She roared and pushed his fist back, causing him to stumble back.

“Why you…” Right grunt growled and stepped forward. A moment later he was howling in pain before crashing in the wooden fence of the house they stood in front of. He grabbed the vital area Rin had struck as she lowered her foot and he sunk to the ground.

“Don’t get to cocky!” Middle grunt let his fist fly forward again only to have it caught by Rin again.

“I hate people like you.” She growled. It’s so troublesome getting involved with others… Still, I can’t stand to see people picked on.

“Let go!” He gasped as he felt the pressure on his hand increase and a sickening cracking sound filled his ears. Rin threw his fist out of her grip. “I won’t… forget this!” He quickly ran away with Left grunt trailing and right grunt stumbling slowly after them.

“Thank you!” David stated. “I never thought something like that would happen…”

“I didn’t do it for you.” Rin lowered her gaze slightly to meet the shorter boy’s.

“W-w-w-what’s your name?”

“My name?” Her right eye twitched. “I hate people like you as well.”

“Huh?” He gasped and stumbled back slightly as though she had hit him.

“A creature such as you is not worthy of knowing my true name.” She turned to walk away before pausing a bit. My name… no one even knows it. I’ve always liked ‘Rin’ better than Himiko, and these pests keep bugging me for it. “A creature like you can only know me as Rin.” She stated before finally walking away.

I don’t know what happened just now… It feels like some cliché fantasy… only the gender roles are reversed. He slowly sank to his knees as the tense feeling left his body. Still, I finally meet a cool girl… and she hates me!

--

“I’m home!” Rin sang as she entered her house and slid out of her shoes. She moved towards the kitchen where she found her mother.

“You’re in a good mood.” She blinked and placed two small cups of tea on the table. Rin sat down across from her.

“I managed to relieve a little stress.” She chuckled. I hate this ‘me’ that I show in front of her. Rin thought to herself without showing any outward signs of her thoughts. Still, it’s annoying when my mother worries so pretending to be the happy, normal girl is actually less troublesome.

“Is that so?” He mother blinked. “So you had a good day?”

“Of course!” She nodded.

“Well, that’s a relief.”

“I’m going to go do my homework!” Rin stated after finishing her tea. She quickly ran out of the kitchen and up the stairs to her room. She quickly closed and locked the door; the smile on her face instantly dropped with the turn of the lock.

She slowly moved towards the television and clicked it on. She grabbed a disc from the shelf under the TV and shoved it into the DVD player. She rolled her desk chair over and fell into it.

My mother is some kind of Japanese freak but there is one thing about her obsessions I like… Rin thought to herself as the anime before her started. I haven’t seen this one yet; I think I’ll watch it all tonight and relieve my stress…

--

Another day of school. Rin growled softly for no real reason as she slumped towards the school. I hate mornings, I hate school. Another day with all those worthless people. She came to a stop outside the path leading towards the school. “Eh?” She stared at the person standing on that path and staring at her.

“H-h-hello… R-r-r-in…” David stated nervously.

“Rin? Is that your name?” Rin flinched and turned around. “I finally heard it!” Amber sung as she nodded. Rin frowned for a moment and then simply headed towards the school.

“Ah, wait!” David started to follow her.

“Huh? Who are you?” Amber followed at his side.

“D-d-da…David.” He gulped loudly.

“Huh?” Amber frowned for a moment and just shrugged. “Well I’m Amber.” She stated as she walked into the school with him. “Are you Rin’s friend?”

“Not really… I don’t think anyone is.” He glanced at the Rin as she headed into the classroom.

“Really? That’s so sad… Well, I’ll just have to make friends with her!” She quickly rushed into the classroom.

“Eh? What are you doing here? Why is your face so red?”

“No reason!” David yelped at James’ sudden voice. “Um… that ‘mysterious girl’… I know her name.”

“You know her name? What is it?” James demanded more than asked.

“Rin.”

“Rin?”

“Rin.”

“How did you find out her name?”

“Well…”

“Bless you!” Amber stated as Rin sneezed violently. She frowned as she didn’t even get a ‘thanks’ for her trouble. “You don’t have to be so anti-social! And why are you always reading those books? So you like science-fiction?” She asked as she glanced at the book’s cover. Rin just silently turned the page. “Come on! Don’t you at least want to talk to anyway? Surely you must want at least one friend!”

In this world where people see through me and don’t know my name, where they only pay attention to my looks… I don’t need nor want friends in this world…
