Adder Point - Part 1: The Small Town on the Deserted Coast
--
There were many secrets in the world, and with those hidden truths, questions lay in waiting. Questions about the nature of life itself, quandaries that threatened the logical mind to snap. One could only say that these were inevitable, as was the need for people to unearth them from their fervent sleep, despite the consequences that would further unfold…
And in this one village on a windy coast, a secret crouched expectantly...
--
Adder Point. Conveniently named after the stern fact that during the daytime, its citizens were slithering adders.
How this puzzling predicament came to be is for another story… right now, the Midsummer Festival was about to begin.
The huts, grass houses with clay walls, sprinkled the steep climb to the tip of a cliff, waves carving shapers into the white stone. Down on the beach where seals lounged, a citizen of the town cooled on a rock. He hissed excitably.
In the distance over the vivid ocean and sky, a glowing sun sank beneath the waves as the light trailed after it. The skies, once blue, were drained of their color as the clouds gravitated over into the dizzying distance. With this phenomenon, a low sucking noise rose from the corners of the world, and everything, all light and color, was zapped from existence as the sun disappeared completely.
For a second, there was a deathly silence.
Nothing moved, nothing spoke, nothing breathed. Cataclysm, some would call it. The more liberal, mind you.
Little did those logical folks know that their ‘logical theory’ was in very fact the opposite.
One by one, slowly at first then with increasing speed, bobs of orange light flared up amongst the shadowed huts, illuminating the people’s dark faces as they wavered at the edges of the light. Black wraiths humming a toneless tune, white specks sparked in the skies, the moon shedding scarce light behind inky clouds. Life was coming back into the hollow lands. The fires danced, and forms emerged from the shadows, bright eyes glittering dangerously.
Human in every aspect besides unusually colored slit pupils, the dwellers of Adder Point smiled joyfully as they circled around the fires, tribal faces alight with yearning expectation. They wore colorful clothes, dresses and tunics stitched to portray magnificent scenes—horned horses prancing through crisp sea crests, elegant birds soaring into a thick canopy, lords and ladies dressed in rich robes in an extravagant hall.
A primal, but strong beat, rose up amongst the town as a gaggle of musicians raised their drums and flutes, playing along to the heartbeats of the people. They danced, feet stomping and couples twirling, as white smiles peeked out in the night. Accompanying the fast music were the low voices of the villagers as they sang a wordless chant. Everyone closed their eyes and hummed, swaying back and forth. Not one citizen was left out.
Then, the musicians stopped. Everyone cheered, a clear voice cutting through the crowd’s celebration. “Citizens of Adder Point!”
They quieted and focused their attention on the speaker, a robust, red-faced man with a lazy smile. A mustache peeked over his red lips.
“My people, let the Midsummer Festival commence!” he yelled, lighting a firecracker in his hand. It sizzled and spat, then flew out of the man’s hands to rocket up in the air. The firecracker exploded in a burst of red and purple.
An even greater cheer followed this, men’s hats flying in the air and ladies kicking off their shoes. The band struck up again to an even livelier tune.
With cries of joy and bubbling laughter filling the town, Adder Point had woken. All were happy. All were alive.
Except for one…
