Midnight Waking

Hey guys! Here is another nano-story! This time, it was just free writing, so I decided to do a prequel to "Midnight Walking". This tells the story of how Andrew and Sofia met. Enjoy!

They say that one of the undead—a vampire—should live alone. But if they had to have a mate, it should be another vampire, never a human. A vampire and human should never be together.

I lived all my life walking among humans and other vampires alone. I had never wanted a companion. But one day, everything changed.

I was in Baltimore, in line at the subway. My self-control for blood was almost perfected. I could stand to be around a thousand humans, but of course, my control wasn’t completely perfect.

“Excuse me,” came a voice behind me.

I moved slightly to my right, and felt someone bump into me. I turned around to see a young woman on the ground. I bent down and helped her up and then walked away.

“Wait!” she called, and I felt her touch my shoulder.

I turned once more to face her. And there she was.

“H-hi,” she stammered out. I smiled lightly at her. “Um, thank you for helping me up…um.”

“Andrew,” I told her. “And you?”

“S-Sofia.”

I shook her hand. “Nice to meet you, Sofia.”

“Same here, Andrew.”

And since then, Sofia and I had been pretty much inseparable. Did she know what I was? No. She didn’t. She would go running away the moment she found out.

And why had I suddenly decided to get involved with a human? I didn’t know. Sofia…she was something special. She surprised me every second we spent together. She was a girl that was raised in a poor, poverty stricken neighborhood, in a family that yelled at her and beat her. Instead of being full of hate because of how she grew up, Sofia was just the opposite. She was sweet and gentle, and that was what made me fall in love with her.

But then one day, she found out my little secret. I had tried so hard to keep it, to try to protect her from what I was. But somehow she found out. And instead of running away, she stayed with me.

“I’m not afraid,” she had told me.

I was so happy. Here was the first human that wasn’t afraid of a horrible monster like me. I smiled at her and pulled her into a hug.

But every moment we spent together was dangerous. At any moment, I could easily kill her. If I suddenly lost control, my love would pay for it. I told her of the risks of being with me.

“I will take the risk,” she told me sternly.

And I hesitantly let myself be with her.

But the selfish part of me deep down, wanted to keep her, risking the danger. I couldn’t live without her, but I was afraid. What would I do if I did hurt her? That thought haunted me every day.

We were at the park today—it was cloudy. Sofia didn’t mind being with me on a cloudy day.

She turned to me and looked at me with her beautiful baby blue eyes.

“I love you,” she murmured softly.

I pulled her into a hug. “I love you too, my love. And I will never let anything hurt you.”

Well, did you like it?
