Prologue
July 13, 1793
The water was red. The blood swirled around his feet, opening and closing in graceful spirals as it circled down to the bottom of the porcelain basin.
"To ensure public tranquillity, two hundred and seventy thousand heads more should fall…" - Jean-Paul Marat
She watched it. À moi, ma chère amie! He called. His friends would come, but there was nothing they could do to help him.
"I killed one man to save 100,000" - CharlotteCorday
The women burst through the door. Their voices were shrill, piercing her ears. But nothing hindered the satisfaction – the triumph – she felt.
"Five or six hundred heads cut off would have assured your repose, freedom and happiness. A false humanity has held your arms and suspended your blows; because of this, millions of your brothers will lose their lives." - Jean-Paul Marat
Someone grabbed her, pulling her arms behind her. The knife dropped from her hand, it hit the floor, spreading the blood of France on the marble.
"I told my plans to no one. I was not killing a man, but a wild beast that was devouring the French people." - Charlotte Corday
