Wanted

He sat silently, watching her dry her hair. She combed it once, twice, three times before she ran the hairdryer over it once more. Just once, wasting time.

He sat silently, watching her turn her stereo on. She turned the volume up a bit, down a bit before she decided it was just right. It was barely audible.

He sat silently, watching her open a book, turning the pages over and over. She threw it against the wall in the end.

He sat silently, watching her turn on her computer to pull the plug out in an angry rage. He stretched his arms weakly out to hold her, before letting them fall back to his side.

He sat silently, watching her turn her attention to the television. Taking the remote in her hand, she changed it once, twice, three times before pressing the off switch and slamming the living room door.

He sat silently, listening to her rant on the phone to her friend about how life sucked. His heart ached to hear her say such things. If only she knew how wrong she was.

He sat silently, waiting for her to stop staring at the photo frame. Ten minutes, twenty minutes passed by and her eyes were still focused, still watching, not moving and seemingly unblinking.

He sat silently while she started to talk.

“Josh, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry but I can’t do this any more. I don’t know how you expected me too. I can’t sit here knowing you won’t be here with me. I can’t sit here knowing I’ll never see your smiling face again. I can’t sit here believing that one day we’ll be together again. I can’t just sit here! I’m sorry but I can’t.”

He stood slowly and moved over to sit opposite her, her eyes glistening with tears.

“I want to believe everything everyone has been telling me. How over time it will get easier and how one day I will have moved on. But now… right now the only thing I want is you. The only thing I crave is you. I want you to hug me and whisper in my ear all the words I’ll ever need to hear. I want you to sit with me and watch a scary movie and I’ll cry and you’ll put your arms around me. You won’t care that I’ll stain your shirt with tears; you’ll just let me cry. I need you to take my hand, pull me out into the rain and kiss me there and then, no matter how wet we end up. I need you, Josh.”

He moved again quietly, to sit next to her.

“Everyday I relive that night. Everyday I pray to God that he’d taken me not you. You were strong and you could live on. Without you, I’m weak; I am nothing. I want to believe this is a horrible dream. A nightmare that I will wake up from to find you sleeping softly next to me. I’ll cry and I’ll wake you, just to know you are there. I’ll run my hands through your hair, lean my cheek against your warm chest and I’ll cry. But I’ll be complete, I’ll be happy. I’ll be with you and that’s all I need, Josh. That’s all I need.”

He reached out to put his arms around her but pulled them back slowly. He stood and he watched her put her arms around her head and cry into her lap.

His heart shattered as he watched her fall to pieces before his very eyes.

“Julie, I’m here.” He whispered. “I will always be here. I need you to be so strong, my girl. I need you to be the brave one. I can’t face what is in store for me if you aren’t strong.”

Each piece of his heart ached, as she didn’t even flinch at his words.

“I know you don’t believe I’m here and I know you’ll never know that I’m stood just inches from your beautiful, distressed face but Julie, I love you so much. I do.” His shoulders slumped as he looked down at her again.

He felt a tough hand pat him on the arm.

“It’s time to go.”

He glanced back at Julie and whispered again, “I love you,” before walking into the bright light behind him.

She looked up then, in disbelief at what she thought she heard. It had sounded like the trees outside had whispered to her. The wind rustling the leaves in a certain way, the right way, the ‘I love you’ kind of way.

“Josh, I love you too.” She replied almost foolishly, like he’d actually been stood right there.

Ok, sometimes I get these mad inspiration moments which develop into rubbish like this. I really liked it because of the surprise idea behind it. (:
By-The-By; I know the title doesn't quite fit - It's a work in progress. :D
