Flashback
“Excuse me, Mrs. Lee,” said a small voice. The woman in her late thirties locked the door, and then looked down curiously to the figure of a small, slightly plumpish boy who had the manners of a grown up. She had known him since young-so many things had changed, but she would always identify him by his unkempt hair.
“Hello, Ren.” She said sweetly. “How are you today?”
“Fine, ma’am,” he answered with a small smile. “Yourself?”
God, the boy didn’t talk like a nine year old.
“I’m fine, thank you very much.” The woman began walking out of her gate, the small boy struggling to keep up with her. “Why aren’t you in school, Ren?”
“I’m sick,” he answered as honestly as she could. The woman didn’t turn around, but he could tell that she was cynical about that. His face remained serious.
“You didn’t really answer my question truthfully.”
“Ren Ho!” She couldn’t tell whether she was more shocked by his maturity or hurt by his knowledge. She considered turning around to face the little boy, to tell the pesky nine years old off, but she knew better. For one thing, her daughter adored this boy.
For another, the boy was right.
She waited impatiently at the traffic junction, the boy still following closely at her side. She groaned.
“What do you want, Ren?”
“I just wanted to know if Clarissa was okay.” He had said it so simply like it was the most normal thing in the world. Despite being more mature than most nine year olds, the woman couldn’t help but feel sorry for him; in another few years or so, he would realize exactly why he cared so much.
“You could have asked her yourself, had you not feigned sickness and gone to school.”
“The kids at school bully me. I don’t want to rely on Claire to stick up for me all the time.” The boy’s voice was barely audible, but she could tell he was struggling not to cry. She felt a slight sympathy for him, but not much. Her own tragedy had only occurred recently, after all.
“Go home, Ren. Get some rest. You’re supposed to be sick, after all.” A green man appeared, and she proceeded to walk across the road.
“I think you shouldn’t pick up Clarissa today,” uttered Ren, his silver eyes suddenly more visible than she had noticed. God, those were scary. What kind of child had silver-?
“You’ve been drinking.” The boy inched closer to her, while his stance was not intimidating at all, the way his eyes blazed with fiery determination was just beyond scary, it was almost nightmarish. She suddenly felt herself seized with fear, and backed away from him hurriedly. “I might just be a kid,” he stated. “But I know. I’ve seen Claire’s bruises. Your husband is dead, and he beat you first. But I think that just because he’s gone, doesn’t mean you should take out your anger on Claire.”
How could he know? He was a child! But yet, what manner of a child was this? Some demon spawned from hell who knew her darkest secrets and thoughts…
And regrets. She thought about her daughter, about the pain she had caused her little nine year old girl.
And she cried.
She didn’t notice the green man had disappeared. Neither had Ren.
The truck came by and ended her misery.
Clarissa had woken up on a Monday morning, grouchy and definitely not well rested. Then again, it had been like this for the past few days.
Ever since Ren had revealed himself as the Night Phantom-or more like Claire had tricked him into revealing himself, she hadn’t seen him since. At first, after he had disappeared, Clarissa had comforted herself by thinking that she would see him the next day, sort things out and everything would be fine.
How wrong she was. But who could have anticipated that Ren would be able to hide himself so well?
Then she remembered Doctor ’s notes, the ones that Cedric had shown her the morning after the dance, and it was all so clear.
He wants to hide from the world…
Duh, invisibility! She had realized that with much, much frustration. She was not going to be able to see him until he wanted to see her.
School was mundane now. Nothing. Clarissa could barely look her mother in the eye as she droned on and on about various mathematical concepts, without feeling guilt for keeping these secrets from her adoptive mum.
For forcing Ren and Night Phantom, two…men, she had loved, into a corner which he had tried avoiding the whole time.
She had told Keith, Jeanette, Pearly, Cedric…but in their own way, they all seemed to have already known and processed this knowledge…each one of them except her. How could she not have known, being the one closest to the two alter-egos? Some shame flooded through her, yet she didn’t know or understand why.
Finally, she ended up sitting in the classroom, looking away from Pearl’s worried face and even Cedric’s concerned looks. Was he coming, or wasn’t he?
--
“He didn’t come,” whispered Clarissa. Pearl sighed in response as she watched her best friend place her head on her desk. The desk shivered.
“Claire, maybe he’s sick or something. You never know.”
Clarissa narrowed her eyes. “Yeah, what are the chances of that…”
“It’s not like you to be that cynical,” said Cedric, walking into the classroom as he shook his head disapprovingly. Streaks of gold flashed out from his dark hair. “That’s my job.”
“Still…I don’t understand what you have to feel guilty about.” Pearly shrugged, rubbing her hands together. She glanced around the classroom. No one else was left. “You wanna tell me exactly what happened?”
“Well, I goaded Ren into saying that he was the Night Phantom…”
“Yeah, I know that already,” interrupted Pearl with wide eyes. “But what’s in his file? Dr had one whole file on Ren alone, right? Cedric showed it to you; he didn’t show it to me!”
“Um…”
“Waaayyy too excited,” interjected Cedric instantly. “Sorry Pearl, but it’s private. I made a deal with Claire, after all.”
Claire squirmed. “Um…”
Pearl’s eyes were rife with irritation.
“You-arrgh! I don’t get the secrecy anyway! Tell me, Claire! I’m your best friend!”
“Now’s not the time,” argued Cedric coldly.
“Screw you!” yelled Pearl loudly at Cedric. “What about Keith and Jean, huh? Were you even going to tell me-”
“You-” Cedric’s eyes blazed like a red ball of fire.
“I will, alright?!” screamed Clarissa in frustration, immediately shutting the two of them up. Cedric looked disappointed, but she ignored him. “But only after I tell Ren…I think it’s only fair. Cedric and I didn’t mean to find the file on Ren…so it’s not like we planned not to tell you guys or anything.”
She took a deep breath. “I already arranged with the Rain members to have a meeting at Angeline’s house. I won’t allow anyone else to get hurt in this fight against the aliens. You saw for yourselves, what they did to Derrick. We’re lucky he’s alive.”
Cedric and Pearly both looked guiltily at the ground.
Claire sighed, her lips thinning. “Just settle your differences and meet me at Angeline’s house at around 3. I’m going to talk to Wei Yuan…I’ve been getting him to try and find Ren for the past few days…”
“Claire-” began Pearl awkwardly.
But Clarissa had already left the class.
Perfect.
So perfect.
Angeline’s magnificent body rose higher into the warm current. She felt so far away, into a world so much better than the one she was in now. She beat her wings until she was high above the treetops…and then she soared!
Beneath her were thousands of acres of rolling hills against an awesome backdrop of snowy white peaks that rose up and pierced the clouds. Moonlight made the tiers of spruce and pine below her look like fantastical castles with silver spines.
I’m so far away from home now. God, I’ve never been so far away from home before.
She soared over the woodlands, skimming over the treetops. At this time of the night, the woods were empty of human life but filled with the most amazing natural sounds-the brooks rippling musically over mossy rocks and the air filled with birdsong and squirrel chatter.
Faster.
Suddenly, everything around her turned into a blur…and then she was flying so fast she could barely catch her breath, the cold mountain air slicing against her skin.
She loved it. She barrel-looped again and dove down like a hurricane in descent, breaking the sound barrier. Sonic boom!
Every sensation she experienced through her flight in the air; she wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
Well, except for one particular guy…
She hovered high above the summit of Mt. Evergreen, her renewed eyesight as brilliant as an eagle as she scanned the deep sky…everything, everything in the air was beautiful. So still, so silent, so peaceful…
Well, except for the person yelling on Mt. Evergreen.
The supersonic blew him out of the sky.
--
“Ren?” said Angeline in gushed tones. “Is that really you?”
The Night Phantom was dressed in what would have been an ordinary physical education shirt and blue gym pants, but they were torn and ripped. His hair was even more unkempt than before, and his face and clothes were muddy.
Ren coughed. “Ya think?!” he complained harshly. “And if I didn’t have insane reflexes, I wouldn’t have caught on to that ledge when you BLEW ME OFF with your sonic boom!” He caught the sadness on her face and sighed. “Forget it, Angeline. I’m okay now.”
“I didn’t see you…” Angeline glided down, landing comfortably into a patch of thick grass that felt strangely like a cotton bed. He grinned at her; messy, dirty and all, and she finally smiled back. He laughed. She couldn’t help but smile back. “When did you get here?” she asked incredulously.
“I’ve been here since yesterday,” said Ren, his voice clearly dry. “You just didn’t see me.”
“Didn’t or could-”
“Couldn’t,” corrected Ren sheepishly. “I’ve been testing out my…powers.” He glanced at her beautiful white angel wings with a grin that she found ever so cute. “You have too, I guess,” he said dumbly. He tried not to stare at her sexy heroine outfit that outlined her breasts and legs so well.
God, he blushed internally. I’m such a perve. I already got to see it all once…He blushed even harder from realizing the thought. And now, I’m such a girl.
He smiled a traditional smile, both cocky yet vulnerable at the same time. Angeline felt a shiver up her spine. An image of Tom Cruise’s smile in ‘Vanilla Sky’ suddenly flashed through her mind.
“Um, Clarissa told me everything,” said Angeline timidly. “I’m sorry.” She looked utterly crestfallen. “It’s really my fault-if I hadn’t kept avoid-you would have…”
“No, it’s not.” Ren’s frown was back, this time with a fiery determination. “You don’t get to blame yourself, Angie. Not on my account.”
Surprisingly, Angeline immediately giggled. A curious, yet slight irritated look crept across his face. “Why is that so funny?”
“It’s not…but that’s the first time you’ve called me Angie.” She grinned, gesturing for him to sit down on the grass patches of the summit next to her as his pearly white teeth flashed at her words. He looked inexplicably pleased with himself. “You look terrible you know,” she murmured, dusting his face. “Why did you run away?”
Ren glared down at his…torn and tattered camping outfit drenched in sweat and mud…and promptly decided not to retort at the ‘you look terrible’ crack. He snuggled up to her mischievously closer, and she jolted back with a scream of surprise, breaking out into giggles almost immediately. He grinned back. She still had the same beautiful smile, the shy reactions as she had the last time they were so close…and inside him, a small fire lit filled with nothing but the desire to hold her…and kiss her…
“Ren?”
He snapped out of it, his silver eyes blazing ever so slightly. “I think I should have asked that first,” he pointed out as gently as he could.
She fell silent, holding her legs together as she studied the ground. Ren tried desperately to keep his eyes off them, but he was already flushed. God, she was sexy when she was shy. “You know what? Never mind. I’m probably not going to answer your question anyway-”
“Wait!” she interjected instantly. “I-I…”
“…”
“I…um…” She blushed. “I’ll never forget that night.”
Ren smirked, placing hands into tattered pockets as he lay down on the grass. “That bad, huh?”
“It wasn’t!” she protested wildly. “It was really…um…the most…”
“…ha?” uttered Ren dumbly.
“You’re so mean, Ren!” she burst out, but not angrily. “You already know how I feel about it! You just want to…hear it from me…”
As intuitive as the Night Phantom was, Ren truly had NO IDEA what she was talking about. “I have no idea what you mean, Angie. I mean, for me…” He looked directly into those olive-green eyes shimmering with tears and already knew what he had to say, what he knew in his heart was already true. “You know I wasn’t a virgin before we did it. In fairness to me, you seduced me.” He waited for her to cringe, before he went on. “But you’re really…the best I ever had. By a mile. If that means anything to you.”
Angeline promptly blushed a deeper shade of red, and he went on. “I’ve always known you were shy, but God, Angie. That is such a turn on.”
“Stop teasing me…” she whispered, but she was smiling. Whether the comment or compliment was totally not typical or not, she had liked it. Angeline was really playful.
“Well-” stuttered Angeline shyly. “I liked it when you did that-” she gestured, much to Ren’s embarrassment. “And that…and th-” Ren hurriedly cut her off with a swift kiss to the cheek.
“But you know…we’re not attached anymore. I don’t…I can’t love you in that way.”
She nodded. “I don’t think I can either.”
“I did love every bit of it.”
“But it’s over.”
“Yeah…you’re not pregnant, are you?”
“No…”
“Thank goodness.” He kissed her on the cheek again before laying back down on the ground.
Angeline felt a flush across her breastbone. The warm feeling shot through her veins and her stomach felt hollow, like it did when she did a barrel roll in the sky.
“Actually, I was planning to look for you…to break up with you.” Her words hit him hard, but he had already seen it coming. He smiled sadly.
“I hadn’t realized we were in a relationship again to begin with,” he lied softly.
She smiled back, looking equally sad despite the gesture of happiness. “Neither did I.”
They hugged awkwardly. Then they hugged a second time, and he lightly kissed her on the cheek. She blushed. It was obviously going to take her a long while to get over him.
“Hey,” he said. “This is for you.” He pointed at the far side of the mountain top. “See that flower on the other side of the mountain?”
Angeline peered. It was a beautiful white flower, one like she had never seen before. The whiteness was so unique, it looked like…”
“My wings,” she whispered. “My white wing-” Suddenly the flower floated towards her, and she caught in her hand. Stunned, she stared at Ren, who winked with a cunning grin on his face.
“How’d you do that?!” she yelled excitedly in awe.
“Magic,” said Ren with a smirk. She promptly hit him on the head, earning a low groan from him.
“Thank you,” she murmured shyly.
“Sure. You know, I’m glad you found me Angeline,” said Ren honestly. “I don’t know whether I would…don’t know what I would have done without you here.” He noticed her blush even harder at his compliment, trying not to look directly at him, and that was when he knew it would take a really long time for him to get over her. And judging by the images of her curvy, sexy body in his head, probably a lot of cold showers as well.
“Ren,” pointed out Angeline embarrassedly. “You’re staring at my-”
“OH! Um…” Ren now flushed as well, blinking his silver eyes rapidly. “I-I…”
“I mean…you can stare if you want…” She cupped her cheeks immediately after she blurted out those words. “Um…I mean…what I meant was…”
“This is really awkward.” Both of them stared at the pebbles on the ground, extremely red faced. The sexual tensions were way too high.
But…
“I wish-” she began, “That we could have had our first time here instead. It’s beautiful.”
“Angie…” He had wanted to say that he would have taken all that he had done to her if he could, but she didn’t regret it…? Duh! What was he supposed to say…? He stood up, and offered her a hand. She took it, looked into those honest silver eyes dead on and embraced him. No words needed.
“Fly back with me, Ren,” she whispered affectionately in his ear. “Let’s go home.”
“Are you really ready for this, Claire?” asked Pearly nervously. The two of them were walking up the storey high driveway of Angeline’s mansion. The cute girl pushed the fringe of her hair, staring intently at her best friend. Clarissa took a deep breath, and closed her eyes.
“I arranged this meeting. I have to be ready...they know about the aliens. I’m sure the others must have told them by now, so we have to be ready.”
“The government hid it from the news, you know. We’re going to have to do something about that,” said Cedric.
“Yeah…but more importantly, they’ll be coming after us now. We don’t want to end up like Derrick. Shannon is okay right?”
Derrick had been rescued by Angeline after being stabbed by a metal Aragonite, an alien soldier slave to the Xoto aliens trying to take back their power source and maybe overthrow the planet. He had been rushed to a hospital and his condition had stabilized, but the injury would leave him scarred for life…and they were unsure exactly when between ‘3 days to 6 months’ he would wake up from his coma.
Shannon, a girl targeted by the aliens had been smuggled away into a protection agency with her boyfriend Gilbert, both rescued by the Night Phantom and a few of the ‘Rain’ members.
“Should be. The principal said she’d call you if there were any problems.”
“Man,” she shook her head in disbelief. “How does that woman get involved in everything?”
As Pearly followed Clarissa step into the huge mansion of Ms Angeline Tou and take a scan of the huge expensive ornaments and the massive glass windows that acted as walls, the whole demeanor of the house changed. Even though every face was staring at Clarissa, Pearly felt a whole lot of pressure on herself. Clarissa stood up to her full height, and every bit of worry that she had for Ren dissolved or was hidden remarkably well, her aura of strength shielding her from the wary gazes of Josephine and Desmond.
Pearly looked at those two in particular. They stood next to each other-the retained jock and a prince of the school looked strangely unusual…she couldn’t get a grip on it; until she noticed that he had six arms now, instead of the four he had previously. He shifted uncomfortably under Pearl’s gaze, and made a disgruntled face. No wonder he hadn’t shown up for school lately. In the midst of the living room where each supernatural person had gathered, it reminded her vaguely of a scene in X-men.
Gavin and Grace, the mysterious short-and-tall couple, winked and waved respectively at her, and she waved back. Judging from their smug looks, it was almost as if they had approved of Clarissa’s clear leadership position.
Wei Yuan, the genius hacker sat next to Mr. Yan and after stealing glances at Claire, both went back to the laptop.
Keith and Jeanette were now arguing about something. Internally, Pearly struggled to mask a grin. The siblings were like comic relief-but also a bigger relief to have around because both their powers were very practical.
On her left, Cedric grinned sardonically, looking as handsome as sin. She tried not to look at his rippling muscles bursting out from his chest-what the heck had he gone and done? But then again, she wasn’t surprised…he seemed to be becoming the main firepower, literally, of the team after all.
Several not so well known ‘Rain’ members stood behind; Wilson, a guy who she had known to be Gavin’s friend, Rachael, a girl whose powerful banshee screech she had witnessed during their training at the ‘camp,’ and Dexter, a nerd in glasses who had become an absolute intellectual genius.
Derrick was not there, of course, and Angeline hadn’t arrived yet.
There was Clarissa, of course, looking damn pretty in tight blue jeans and a tank top. Whether she had any control of her powers or not…or even if they really existed to begin with, since she had only sort of seen them once-by the looks on each of them, even Josephine; she was already the leader of this motley crew. Every action she made cried out simply; Trust me. Believe in me. I am here to save all of us.
For a moment, Pearl envied her. Well, at least until she caught sight of the last person sitting at the corner of the room, a devilish smirk on his face while dressed in a stunning tuxedo, his silver eyes shining brightly.
“Ren,” she whispered.
--
Clarissa had seen him, and he had seen her. He got up with a contented smile and walked over to her. “Hey,” he mumbled, scratching his head nervously. “I’m really sorry, Claire. I panicked…but I guess most of them already know by now, right?”
“It’s not like I intended to tell-” explained Clarissa hurriedly. But Ren just smiled.
“It’s okay.” Her heart beat faster just seeing his smile…what on earth was happening to her?
“It’s really good to see you,” Claire whispered, and felt a lump in her throat.
“It’s good to be seen,” said Ren, placing his hands in his pockets. He laughed; a familiar laugh she could never forget. “You like the outfit? I ruined mine, so when I got back here with Angie last night she fixed me up with some of her dad’s clothes…he’s hardly here anyway.”
“You look great,” she mumbled, blushing slightly. Cedric grinned at the sidelines, and for once in a long while, Pearly grinned with him. Keith and Jeanette were practically already in stitches.
“You look pretty good yourself,” said Ren, earning another shade of pink from Claire. “Did you miss me-”
Keith cringed. Pearly gasped. Cedric sighed. Jeanette laughed.
Clarissa flared.
“So close,” said Keith pityingly, shaking his head. “If he hadn’t said that…”
CRASH
A few seconds later, Claire stormed away, while Keith, Jeanette, Pearly and Cedric slowly edged towards a Ren-sized hole in the glass walls.
“You know, that’s supposed to be unbreakable glass,” commented Cedric.
“Yeah, Angeline better get a refund,” agreed Pearly.
“It’s wasting air-con,” pointed out Jeanette. Immediately, all four of them broke out into laughter.
“Real funny, guys!” groaned Ren loudly.
“You’re lucky it was only a floor up!” yelled Keith. Ren was now entangled in the bushes on the garden of the mansion outside.
“Yeah, the famous Night Phantom ought to survive that,” growled Clarissa from behind him, and Ren cringed again.
“I’m sorry, Claire. I really am.”
“You IDIOT! Do YOU HAVE ANY FKING IDEA HOW HARD I LOOKED FOR YOU?! How worried I was?! You’re such a jer-”
She stopped talking when a pair of warm arms enveloped her entire body, and sunk into it. Tears started falling lightly from her eyes.
“Thanks, Clarissa,” whispered Ren. “I mean it. It means so much to me.”
“Are you back for good?” murmured Clarissa with red teary eyes.
“Yeah, I’m back. For good. How would I say this…?”
He smirked with closed eyes.
“I’m reawakened.”
“Good,” whispered Clarissa. “Because we have lots of things to do.”
And so the group is back, as well as Ren.
