The woods were deathly quiet and so dark it was impossible to see more than a few feet in either direction. No creature dared to move even the skinny black dog crouched in the ferns scanning the undergrowth without stopping. By her side sat a light brown puppy who nestled into her mother's fur, brown eyes wide in terror.

A stick snapped nearby making the mother's head whip around, her eyes burning brightly. Out of the shadows stepped a creature that was not quite human. He had a deeply lined face with red eyes that looked like fresh blood. When he smilied he revealed rows of dagger sharp teeth. The mother dog stood up a growl rising in her throat. The part human raised his hand. "Careful Night," he said, "Those who fight against me always die."

Night's eyes flashed. "I will fight against you Dakin for as long as you threaten our way of life."

Dakin laughed. "Then you will die a hero like many before you have died. Do you know how many souls I have watched die as the light flickers out of their hopeless eyes," he hissed, "You will die and I will still take over the dogans."

Night hissed and leaped into the air just as Dakin raised his hand and shouted in a strange language. From his hand shot a bolt of red lightening which struck Night in the chest. The dead dog fell right on top of her child. Dakin kicked her with his foot and crowed, "You are wrong to think I am easy to kill."

He then turned to the puppy who he scooped up. Seeing his face the puppy wiggled in fright. "Now my little princess," Dakin said, "I have a special gift for you. You will not remember this night of anything about your old life expect your name. Maybe you will discover what you are after it is too late."

Dakin tossed the puppy ontot the ground as the puppy turned into a human girl with the same color hair her fur had been moments before. She twisted in the air and landed in front of him. "They will find me," she said before there was another flash of light and the demon was gone.
